Transliteration
Ha-meem
Sahih International
Ha, Meem.
Muhsin Khan
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].

Ha-Mim
Dr. Ghali
Ha, M"m. (These are the names of letters of the Arabic alphabet, and only Allah knows their meaning here)
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
H? m?m: God knows best what He means by these [letters].
43:2
43:2
Transliteration
Walkitabi almubeen
Sahih International
By the clear Book,
Muhsin Khan
By the manifest Book (that makes things clear, i.e. this Quran).
Yusuf Ali
By the Book that makes things clear,-
Dr. Ghali
And, (by) the evident Book,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
By the Book, the Qur’?n, that clarifies, the one that manifests the path of guidance and what one needs of [the prescriptions of] the Law.
43:3

Transliteration
Inna jaAAalnahu qur-ananAAarabiyyan laAAallakum taAAqiloona
Sahih International
Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand.
Muhsin Khan
We verily, have made it a Quran in Arabic, that you may be able to understand (its meanings and its admonitions).
Yusuf Ali
We have made it a Qur'an in Arabic, that ye may be able to understand (and learn wisdom).
Dr. Ghali
Surely We have made it an Arabic Qur'an that possibly you would consider;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Lo! We have made it, We have brought the Book into existence [as], an Arabic Qur’?n, in the language of the Arabs, that perhaps you, O people of Mecca, may understand, [that you may] comprehend its meanings.
43:4
43:4
Transliteration
Wa-innahu fee ommi alkitabi ladaynalaAAaliyyun hakeem
Sahih International
And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.
Muhsin Khan
And Verily, it (this Quran) is in the Mother of the Book (i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz), before Us, indeed Exalted, full of Wisdom.
Yusuf Ali
And verily, it is in the Mother of the Book, in Our Presence, high (in dignity), full of wisdom.
Dr. Ghali
And surely it is in the Mother (i.e., the Essence; the preserved tablet) of the Book, close to Us, indeed ever-exalted, ever-wise.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it is indeed, fixed, in the Mother Book, the source of all the scriptures, namely, the Preserved Tablet, [which is] with Us (ladayn? substitutes [for f? ummi’l-kit?bi, ‘in the Mother Book’]) [and it is] indeed exalted, above [all] the scriptures [that came] before it, wise, containing excellent wisdoms.
43:5

Transliteration
Afanadribu AAankumu aththikrasafhan an kuntum qawman musrifeen
Sahih International
Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?
Muhsin Khan
Shall We then (warn you not and) take away the Reminder (this Quran) from you, because you are a people Musrifun
Yusuf Ali
Shall We then take away the Message from you and repel (you), for that ye are a people transgressing beyond bounds?
Dr. Ghali
Shall We then strike away the Remembrance (i.e., take away the Qur'an from you) from you, pardoning, for that you are an extravagant people?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Shall We turn away, [shall We] withhold, from you the Remembrance, the Qur’?n, utterly, an utter withholding, so that you are then neither commanded nor forbidden, because you are a profligate, an idolatrous, folk? No!
43:6
43:6
Transliteration
Wakam arsalna min nabiyyin feeal-awwaleen
Sahih International
And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,
Muhsin Khan
And how many a Prophet have We sent amongst the men of old.
Yusuf Ali
But how many were the prophets We sent amongst the peoples of old?
Dr. Ghali
And how many a Prophet We sent among the earliest (people),
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And how many a prophet did We send among the ancients!
43:7
43:7
Transliteration
Wama ya/teehim min nabiyyin illakanoo bihi yastahzi-oon
Sahih International
But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.
Muhsin Khan
And never came there a Prophet to them but they used to mock at him.
Yusuf Ali
And never came there a prophet to them but they mocked him.
Dr. Ghali
And in no way did a Prophet come up to them, except that they used to mock at him.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And never did a prophet come to them but that they used to deride him, in the same way that your people deride you — this [statement] is intended to comfort the Prophet (s).
43:8
43:8
Transliteration
Faahlakna ashadda minhum batshanwamada mathalu al-awwaleen
Sahih International
And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.
Muhsin Khan
Then We destroyed men stronger (in power) than these, and the example of the ancients has passed away (before them).
Yusuf Ali
So We destroyed (them)- stronger in power than these;- and (thus) has passed on the Parable of the peoples of old.
Dr. Ghali
So We caused to perish (people) more valiant in assault than they, and the similitude of the earliest (people) has passed away.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So We destroyed those who were mightier than them — than your people — in prowess, strength, and [already] there passed, there has been mentioned in previous verses, the example of the ancients, the description of how they were destroyed, and thus the sequel for your people will be the same.
43:9
43:9
Transliteration
Wala-in saaltahum man khalaqa assamawatiwal-arda layaqoolunna khalaqahunna alAAazeezualAAaleem
Sahih International
And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing."
Muhsin Khan
And indeed if you ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" They will surely say: "The All-Mighty, the All-Knower created them."
Yusuf Ali
If thou wert to question them, 'Who created the heavens and the earth?' They would be sure to reply, 'they were created by (Him), the Exalted in Power, Full of Knowledge';-
Dr. Ghali
And indeed in case you ask them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" Indeed they will definitely say, "The Ever-Mighty, The Ever-Knowing created them."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And if (wa-la-in: the l?m is for oaths) you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they will surely say (the indicative n?n has been omitted because of the other n?n coming after it, and likewise the w?w [replaced by the damma in -lunna], because of two unvowelled consonants coming together), ‘The Mighty, the Knower created them’ — [this would have to be] their eventual response, that is to say, God [created them], Lord of Might and Knowledge. God, exalted be He, adds:
43:10

Transliteration
Allathee jaAAala lakumu al-ardamahdan wajaAAala lakum feeha subulan laAAallakum tahtadoon
Sahih International
[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided
Muhsin Khan
Who has made for you the earth like a bed, and has made for you roads therein, in order that you may find your way,
Yusuf Ali
(Yea, the same that) has made for you the earth (like a carpet) spread out, and has made for you roads (and channels) therein, in order that ye may find guidance (on the way);
Dr. Ghali
(He) Who made the earth to be a cradle for you and made ways for you therein that possibly you would be guided.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He Who made the earth a cradle for you, a flat resting-place, like a child’s cradle, and placed for you therein ways, routes, that perhaps you may be guided, to your destinations during your travels;
43:11
43:11
Transliteration
Wallathee nazzala mina assama-imaan biqadarin faansharna bihi baldatan maytan kathalikatukhrajoon
Sahih International
And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -
Muhsin Khan
And Who sends down water (rain) from the sky in due measure. Then We revive a dead land therewith, and even so you will be brought forth (from the dead),
Yusuf Ali
That sends down (from time to time) rain from the sky in due measure;- and We raise to life therewith a land that is dead; even so will ye be raised (from the dead);-
Dr. Ghali
And Who has been sending down from the heaven water with determined estimate; so We have made to rise again thereby a deceased country; thus you will be brought out.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and Who sent down water from the heaven in measure, that is to say, in the measure that you require thereof and did not send it down in a deluge, and We revived with it a dead land. Thus — like this revivification — will you be brought forth, from your graves, alive;
43:12
43:12
Transliteration
Wallathee khalaqa al-azwajakullaha wajaAAala lakum mina alfulki wal-anAAamima tarkaboon
Sahih International
And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount.
Muhsin Khan
And Who has created all the pairs and has appointed for you ships and cattle on which you ride,
Yusuf Ali
That has created pairs in all things, and has made for you ships and cattle on which ye ride,
Dr. Ghali
And Who created the pairs, all of them, and made for you of the ships and the cattle (ÉAncan includes cattle, camels, sheep and goats) (some) that you ride,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and Who created the pairs, the species, all of them, and made for you ships and cattle, such as camels, on which you ride (the referential pronoun has been omitted here for brevity; it is genitive in the case of the first, that is, f?hi [sc. tarkab?na f?hi, ‘you ride in them’] and accusative in the case of the second [sc. tarkab?nah?, ‘you ride them’]),
43:13
43:13
Transliteration
Litastawoo AAala thuhoorihithumma tathkuroo niAAmata rabbikum itha istawaytumAAalayhi wataqooloo subhana allathee sakhkhara lanahatha wama kunna lahu muqrineen
Sahih International
That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say. "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.
Muhsin Khan
In order that you may mount firmly on their backs, and then may remember the Favour of your Lord when you mount thereon, and say: "Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts)."
Yusuf Ali
In order that ye may sit firm and square on their backs, and when so seated, ye may celebrate the (kind) favour of your Lord, and say, "Glory to Him Who has subjected these to our (use), for we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves),
Dr. Ghali
That you may level yourselves (i.e., sit) on their backs. Thereafter you remember the favor of your Lord when you have leveled yourselves on them, and say, All Extolment be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and in no way could we be ascribing comrades to Him.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
that you may sit, that you may find a firm position, upon their backs (He has made the [suffixed] pronoun a masculine plural and rendered zahr, ‘back’, plural because of the particle m? and its [plural] import); and then remember your Lord’s grace when you are settled on them, and say, ‘Glory be to Him Who has disposed this for us, and we [by] ourselves were no match for it, [not] capable [of it].
43:14
43:14
Transliteration
Wa-inna ila rabbinalamunqaliboon
Sahih International
And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."
Muhsin Khan
And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return!
Yusuf Ali
"And to our Lord, surely, must we turn back!"
Dr. Ghali
And surely to our Lord We are indeed turning over." (i.e., returning)
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And indeed it is to our Lord that we shall return’, [to Him that] we shall depart.
43:15
43:15
Transliteration
WajaAAaloo lahu min AAibadihi juz-aninna al-insana lakafoorun mubeen
Sahih International
But they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.
Muhsin Khan
Yet they assign to some of His slaves a share with Him (by pretending that He has children, and considering them as equals or co-partners in worship with Him). Verily, man is indeed a manifest ingrate!
Yusuf Ali
Yet they attribute to some of His servants a share with Him (in his godhead)! truly is man a blasphemous ingrate avowed!
Dr. Ghali
And they have made up for Him a portion of His bondmen! (i.e., associates with Him) Surely man is indeed evidently a constant disbeliever.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they assign to Him from among His own servants a part, when they say that the angels are God’s daughters — for a child is a part of its parent — even though the angels are [like them] servants of His, exalted be He. Man, [such as the one] who says the above-mentioned [words], is verily a manifest ingrate, one whose ungratefulness is manifest and clear.
43:16
43:16
Transliteration
Ami ittakhatha mimma yakhluqubanatin waasfakum bilbaneen
Sahih International
Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?
Muhsin Khan
Or has He taken daughters out of what He has created, and He has selected for you sons?
Yusuf Ali
What! has He taken daughters out of what He himself creates, and granted to you sons for choice?
Dr. Ghali
Or even has He taken to Him, from what He creates, daughters and has elected for you (only) sons?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Or (am has the significance of the hamza of denial; the ‘saying’ is implied, in other words, a-taq?l?na, ‘[or] do you say that …’) He has adopted, from all that He has created, daughters, for Himself, and preferred you, privileged you, with sons? — that which is the necessary inference from what you claim and which by itself is an abomination.
43:17
43:17
Transliteration
Wa-itha bushshira ahaduhum bimadaraba lirrahmani mathalan thallawajhuhu muswaddan wahuwa katheem
Sahih International
And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
Muhsin Khan
And if one of them is informed of the news of (the birth of) that which he set forth as a parable to the Most Beneficent (Allah) (i.e. of a girl), his face becomes dark, gloomy, and he is filled with grief!
Yusuf Ali
When news is brought to one of them of (the birth of) what he sets up as a likeness to (Allah) Most Gracious, his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief!
Dr. Ghali
And when one of them is given the good tidings of what he struck (i.e., cited) as a likeness to The All-Merciful, (i.e., he is given the news of the birth of a daughter) his face lingers blackened, and he is constantly repressing anguish inwardly.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And when one of them is given the good tidings of that which he has attributed to the Compassionate One, [of that which] he has likened to Him by the ascription to Him of daughters — for a child is likened to its parent; in other words, when one of them is informed that a daughter has been born to him, his face becomes darkened, transformed into one laden with anguish, and he chokes inwardly, filled with anguish: so how can such a person then attribute daughters to Him? Exalted be He high above such [claims].
43:18
43:18
Transliteration
Awaman yunashshao fee alhilyatiwahuwa fee alkhisami ghayru mubeen
Sahih International
So is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allah ]?
Muhsin Khan
(Do they then like for Allah) a creature who is brought up in adornments (wearing silk and gold ornaments, i.e. women), and in dispute cannot make herself clear?
Yusuf Ali
Is then one brought up among trinkets, and unable to give a clear account in a dispute (to be associated with Allah)?
Dr. Ghali
Is he who is brought up amid ornaments and in adversariness is without (demonstrable) evidence (to be associated with Allah)?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
What! (a-wa contains both the hamza of denial and the conjunctive waw, ‘and’, in other words, ‘do they ascribe to God …’) one that is brought up amid trinkets, ornaments, and is incoherent in a dispute?, [unable] to argue clearly because of an [inherent] inability [in this respect] as a result of [that person belonging to] the female sex.
43:19
43:19
Transliteration
WajaAAaloo almala-ikata allatheenahum AAibadu arrahmani inathanashahidoo khalqahum satuktabu shahadatuhum wayus-aloon
Sahih International
And they have made the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.
Muhsin Khan
And they make the angels who themselves are slaves to the Most Beneficent (Allah) females. Did they witness their creation? Their evidence will be recorded, and they will be questioned!
Yusuf Ali
And they make into females angels who themselves serve Allah. Did they witness their creation? Their evidence will be recorded, and they will be called to account!
Dr. Ghali
And they have made the Angels, who are the bondmen of The All-Merciful, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be written down, and they will be questioned (about it).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they have made the angels, who are themselves servants of the Compassionate One, females. Did they witness, were they present at, their creation? Their testimony, to the effect that they are females, will be written down and they will be questioned, about it in the Hereafter, wherefore punishment will ensue for them.
43:20

Transliteration
Waqaloo law shaa arrahmanuma AAabadnahum ma lahum bithalika minAAilmin in hum illa yakhrusoon
Sahih International
And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but falsifying.
Muhsin Khan
And they said: "If it had been the Will of the Most Beneficent (Allah), we should not have worshipped them (false deities)." They have no knowledge whatsoever of that. They do nothing but lie!
Yusuf Ali
("Ah!") they say, "If it had been the will of (Allah) Most Gracious, we should not have worshipped such (deities)!" Of that they have no knowledge! they do nothing but lie!
Dr. Ghali
And they have said, "If The All-Merciful had (so) decided, in no way would we have worshiped them." In no way do they have any knowledge of that; decidedly they are (doing nothing) except conjecturing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they say, ‘Had the Compassionate One [so] willed, we would not have worshipped them’, the angels: therefore our worship of them happens by His will and so He must be satisfied with it. God, exalted be He, says: They do not have any knowledge of that, which is said of His being satisfied with the worship of these [angels]; and they are only surmising, inventing lies in this [respect] and so punishment will befall them as a result thereof.
43:21
43:21
Transliteration
Am ataynahum kitabanmin qablihi fahum bihi mustamsikoon
Sahih International
Or have We given them a book before the Qur'an to which they are adhering?
Muhsin Khan
Or have We given them any Book before this (the Quran), to which they are holding fast?
Yusuf Ali
What! have We given them a Book before this, to which they are holding fast?
Dr. Ghali
Or even have We brought them a Book even before it, (The Qur'an) so that they are upholding it fast.?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Or have We brought them a scripture before, that is, [before] the Qur’?n, that they should worship other than God, so that they are holding fast to it? In other words, this never happened.
43:22
43:22
Transliteration
Bal qaloo inna wajadna abaanaAAala ommatin wa-inna AAala atharihimmuhtadoon
Sahih International
Rather, they say, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided."
Muhsin Khan
Nay! They say: "We found our fathers following a certain way and religion, and we guide ourselves by their footsteps."
Yusuf Ali
Nay! they say: "We found our fathers following a certain religion, and we do guide ourselves by their footsteps."
Dr. Ghali
No indeed, (but) they have said, "Surely we found our fathers upon a course, (Literally: a nation: a community; following a leadership or a religion) and surely we are guided upon their tracks."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay, but they say, ‘Lo! we found our fathers following a [certain] creed and we are indeed, proceeding, in their footsteps to be guided’, by them, for they used to worship other than God.
43:23
43:23
Transliteration
Wakathalika ma arsalnamin qablika fee qaryatin min natheerin illa qalamutrafooha inna wajadna abaanaAAala ommatin wa-inna AAala atharihimmuqtadoon
Sahih International
And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."
Muhsin Khan
And similarly, We sent not a warner before you (O Muhammad SAW) to any town (people) but the luxurious ones among them said: "We found our fathers following a certain way and religion, and we will indeed follow their footsteps."
Yusuf Ali
Just in the same way, whenever We sent a Warner before thee to any people, the wealthy ones among them said: "We found our fathers following a certain religion, and we will certainly follow in their footsteps."
Dr. Ghali
And thus in no way did We send even before you any warner into a town, except that its (population) living in ease and luxury said, "Surely we found our fathers upon a course (Literally: a nation; a community; following a leadership pr a religion) and surely we are emulating (them) upon their tracks."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And thus We never sent a warner before you into any city without that its affluent folk, those of comfortable means, said, the like of what your people say: ‘Lo! we found our fathers following a [certain] creed and [so] we are indeed following in their footsteps’.
43:24
43:24
Transliteration
Qala awa law ji/tukum bi-ahdamimma wajadtum AAalayhi abaakum qalooinna bima orsiltum bihi kafiroon
Sahih International
[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."
Muhsin Khan
(The warner) said: "Even if I bring you better guidance than that which you found your fathers following?" They said: "Verily, We disbelieve in that with which you have been sent."
Yusuf Ali
He said: "What! Even if I brought you better guidance than that which ye found your fathers following?" They said: "For us, we deny that ye (prophets) are sent (on a mission at all)."
Dr. Ghali
He said, " (Even) if I should come to you with a better guidance than you found your fathers upon?" They said, "Surely we are disbelievers in what you have been sent with."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Say, to them: ‘What! Will you follow them, even if I bring you a better [means to] guidance than what you found your fathers following?’ They say, ‘Lo! we disbelieve in what you, and those before you, are sent with’. God, exalted be He, says to them, as a threat to them:
43:25
43:25
Transliteration
Fantaqamna minhum fanthurkayfa kana AAaqibatu almukaththibeen
Sahih International
So we took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.
Muhsin Khan
So We took revenge of them, then see what was the end of those who denied (Islamic Monotheism).
Yusuf Ali
So We exacted retribution from them: now see what was the end of those who rejected (Truth)!
Dr. Ghali
Then We took vengeance upon them; so look into how was the end of the beliers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So We took vengeance on them, that is to say, on those who denied the messengers before you; behold then how was the sequel for the deniers.
43:26
43:26
Transliteration
Wa-ith qala ibraheemuli-abeehi waqawmihi innanee baraon mimma taAAbudoon
Sahih International
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship
Muhsin Khan
And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said to his father and his people: "Verily, I am innocent of what you worship,
Yusuf Ali
Behold! Abraham said to his father and his people: "I do indeed clear myself of what ye worship:
Dr. Ghali
And as Ibrahim (Abraham) said to his father and his people, "Surely I (myself) am completely quit of whatever you worship
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And, mention, when Abraham said to his father and his people, ‘Surely I am innocent of that which you worship,
43:27
43:27
Transliteration
Illa allathee fataraneefa-innahu sayahdeen
Sahih International
Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."
Muhsin Khan
"Except Him (i.e. I worship none but Allah Alone) Who did create me, and verily, He will guide me."
Yusuf Ali
"(I worship) only Him Who made me, and He will certainly guide me."
Dr. Ghali
Except Him Who originated me; so surely He will soon guide me."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except Him Who originated, created, me; for He will indeed guide me’, He will show me the way to His religion.
43:28
43:28
Transliteration
WajaAAalaha kalimatan baqiyatanfee AAaqibihi laAAallahum yarjiAAoon
Sahih International
And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].
Muhsin Khan
And he made it [i.e. La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone)] a Word lasting among his offspring (True Monotheism), that they may turn back (i.e. to repent to Allah or receive admonition).
Yusuf Ali
And he left it as a Word to endure among those who came after him, that they may turn back (to Allah).
Dr. Ghali
And he made it a word enduring among his posterity that possibly they would return.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And he made it, namely, the statement of the affirmation of [God’s] Oneness, understood from his words, I shall indeed depart to my Lord; He will guide me [Q. 37:99], a word enduring among his posterity, his descendants, and thus there still remains among them those who affirm the Oneness of [God]; that perhaps they, that is, the people of Mecca, might recant, what they follow [and return] to the religion of their forefather Abraham.
43:29
43:29
Transliteration
Bal mattaAAtu haola-i waabaahumhatta jaahumu alhaqqu warasoolunmubeen
Sahih International
However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.
Muhsin Khan
Nay, but I gave (the good things of this life) to these (polytheists) and their fathers to enjoy, till there came to them the truth (the Quran), and a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) making things clear.
Yusuf Ali
Yea, I have given the good things of this life to these (men) and their fathers, until the Truth has come to them, and a messenger making things clear.
Dr. Ghali
No indeed, (but) I made these and their fathers enjoy (life) until the Truth came to them and an evident Messenger.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay, but I have let these, idolaters, and their fathers enjoy [life], without hastening to punish them, until there came to them the truth, the Qur’?n, and a messenger who makes [things] clear, one who manifests to them the stipulations of the Law — and this [messenger] is Muhammad (s).

Walamma jaahumu alhaqquqaloo hatha sihrun wa-inna bihi kafiroon
Sahih International
But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."
Muhsin Khan
And when the truth (this Quran) came to them, they (the disbelievers in this Quran) said: "This is magic, and we disbelieve therein."
Yusuf Ali
But when the Truth came to them, they said: "This is sorcery, and we do reject it."
Dr. Ghali
And as soon as the Truth came to them, they said, "This is a sorcery, and surely in it we are disbelievers."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But when the truth, the Qur’?n, came to them, they said, ‘This is sorcery, and we are indeed disbelievers in it’.

Transliteration
Waqaloo lawla nuzzila hathaalqur-anu AAala rajulin mina alqaryatayni AAatheem
Sahih International
And they said, "Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"
Muhsin Khan
And they say: "Why is not this Quran sent down to some great man of the two towns (Makkah and Ta'if)?"
Yusuf Ali
Also, they say: "Why is not this Qur'an sent down to some leading man in either of the two (chief) cities?"
Dr. Ghali
And they have said, "Had this Qur'an been successively sent down upon a man of eminence in the two towns?" (Makkah and At-TaÉif)
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they said, ‘If only this Qur’?n had been revealed to some great man from, the inhabitants of, the two towns!’, in other words, from either of the two; such as al-Wal?d b. al-Mugh?ra at Mecca or ‘Urwa b. Mas‘?d al-Thaqaf? at T?’if.

Transliteration
Ahum yaqsimoona rahmata rabbika nahnuqasamna baynahum maAAeeshatahum fee alhayatiaddunya warafaAAna baAAdahum fawqabaAAdin darajatin liyattakhitha baAAduhumbaAAdan sukhriyyan warahmatu rabbika khayrun mimmayajmaAAoon
Sahih International
Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.
Muhsin Khan
Is it they who would portion out the Mercy of your Lord? It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in this world, and We raised some of them above others in ranks, so that some may employ others in their work. But the Mercy (Paradise) of your Lord (O Muhammad SAW) is better than the (wealth of this world) which they amass.
Yusuf Ali
Is it they who would portion out the Mercy of thy Lord? It is We Who portion out between them their livelihood in the life of this world: and We raise some of them above others in ranks, so that some may command work from others. But the Mercy of thy Lord is better than the (wealth) which they amass.
Dr. Ghali
Is it they who divide the mercy of your Lord? We have divided among them their subsistence in the present life (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this world) and raised some of them above (some) others in degrees, that some of them may take to themselves (some) others in subjection; and the mercy of your Lord is more charitable (i.e., better) than whatever they heap (Literally: gather) together.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Is it they who apportion the mercy of your Lord?, [the mercy being] prophethood. We have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world, making some of them wealthy and others poor, and raised some of them, in wealth, above others by degrees, so that some of them, who are wealthy, may take others, who are poor, in service, disposed to work for them in return for a wage (the [final] y?’ [in sukhriyy?] is attributive; a variant reading has sikhriyyan); and the mercy of your Lord, that is, Paradise, is better than what they amass, in this world.

Transliteration
Walawla an yakoona annasuommatan wahidatan lajaAAalna liman yakfuru birrahmanilibuyootihim suqufan min fiddatin wamaAAarijaAAalayha yathharoon
Sahih International
And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful - for their houses - ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount
Muhsin Khan
And were it not that all mankind would have become of one community (all disbelievers, desiring worldly life only), We would have provided for those who disbelieve in the Most Beneficent (Allah), silver roofs for their houses, and elevators (and stair-ways, etc. of silver) whereby they ascend,
Yusuf Ali
And were it not that (all) men might become of one (evil) way of life, We would provide, for everyone that blasphemes against (Allah) Most Gracious, silver roofs for their houses and (silver) stair-ways on which to go up,
Dr. Ghali
And had it not been that mankind would be one nation, We would indeed have made for whomever disbelieve in The All-Merciful roofs of silver to their homes, and stairways whereon they mount.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And were it not [for the danger] that mankind would be one community, following disbelief, We would have made, for those who disbelieve in the Compassionate One, roofs (read saqfan, or plural suqufan) of silver for their houses (li-buy?tihim substitutes for li-man, ‘for those who’) and stairs, such as steps, [also] of silver, by which they ascend, [by which] they go up to the roof;

Walibuyootihim abwaban wasururanAAalayha yattaki-oon

And for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline

And for their houses, doors (of silver), and thrones (of silver) on which they could recline,

Wazukhrufan wa-in kullu thalika lammamataAAu alhayati addunya wal-akhiratuAAinda rabbika lilmuttaqeen
Sahih International
And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.
Muhsin Khan
And adornments of gold. Yet all this (i.e. the roofs, doors, stairs, elevators, thrones etc. of their houses) would have been nothing but an enjoyment of this world. And the Hereafter with your Lord is only for the Muttaqun.
Yusuf Ali
And also adornments of gold. But all this were nothing but conveniences of the present life: The Hereafter, in the sight of thy Lord is for the Righteous.
Dr. Ghali
And decorations. And, decidedly, as yet, this is only the enjoyment of the present life, and the Hereafter in the Providence of your Lord is for the pious.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and ornaments, gold: in other words, were it not for fear that a believer might disbelieve as a result of Our giving the disbeliever what has been mentioned, We would have given him such [luxuries], since the [affairs of this] world represent no danger to Us and he [the disbeliever] would then have no share in the Bliss of the Hereafter. Yet surely (wa-in: in is softened from the hardened form [inna]) all that would be nothing (read lam?, with the m? as extra; or read lamm? to mean ‘but’, making the particle in for negation) but the [transient] enjoyment of the life of this world, enjoyed during it, but then perishes, and the Hereafter, Paradise, with your Lord is for the God-fearing.

Transliteration
Waman yaAAshu AAan thikri arrahmaninuqayyid lahu shaytanan fahuwa lahu qareen
Sahih International
And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
Muhsin Khan
And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allah) (i.e. this Quran and worship of Allah), We appoint for him Shaitan (Satan - devil) to be a Qarin (an intimate companion) to him.
Yusuf Ali
If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.
Dr. Ghali
And whoever is purblind to the Remembrance of The All-Merciful, We preordain for him a Shaytan (An ever-Vicious (one), i.e., a devil) who (becomes his) comrade.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And whoever withdraws from, [whoever] is oblivious, to the Remembrance of the Compassionate One, namely, the Qur’?n, We assign, We produce, for him a devil and he becomes his companion, never leaving his side.

Wa-innahum layasuddoonahum AAani assabeeliwayahsaboona annahum muhtadoon
Sahih International
And indeed, the devils avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided
Muhsin Khan
And verily, they (Satans / devils) hinder them from the Path (of Allah), but they think that they are guided aright!
Yusuf Ali
Such (evil ones) really hinder them from the Path, but they think that they are being guided aright!
Dr. Ghali
And surely they indeed bar them from the way, and they reckon that they are right-guided.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And indeed they, that is, the devils, bar them, the blind, from the way, [from] the path of guidance, while they suppose that they are [rightly] guided (the plural [muhtad?na] takes into account the [potentially plural] sense of man, ‘whoever’, [of the previous verse]),

Transliteration
Hatta itha jaanaqala ya layta baynee wabaynaka buAAda almashriqaynifabi/sa alqareen
Sahih International
Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "Oh, I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west - how wretched a companion."
Muhsin Khan
Till, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says [to his Qarin (Satan / devil companion)] "Would that between me and you were the distance of the two easts (or the east and west)" a worst (type of) companion (indeed)!
Yusuf Ali
At length, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says (to his evil companion): "Would that between me and thee were the distance of East and West!" Ah! evil is the companion (indeed)!
Dr. Ghali
Until, when he comes to Us, he says, "Oh, would that there had been between me and you the distance of the two easts!" (This is sometimes understood to mean the east and west; or the rising of the sun and moon; or the rising of the sun in summer and winter) Miserable then is the comrade!
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
until when he comes to Us, such a blind one, together with his companion, on the Day of Resurrection, he says, to him: ‘O (y? is for calling attention) would that there were between me and you the distance of the two easts!’, that is to say, like the distance between the east and the west, What an evil companion then!, you are for me. God, exalted be He, says:

Transliteration
Walan yanfaAAakumu alyawma ith thalamtumannakum fee alAAathabi mushtarikoon
Sahih International
And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
Muhsin Khan
It will profit you not this Day (O you who turn away from Allah's remembrance and His worship, etc.) as you did wrong, (and) that you will be sharers (you and your Qarin) in the punishment.
Yusuf Ali
When ye have done wrong, it will avail you nothing, that Day, that ye shall be partners in Punishment!
Dr. Ghali
And it will never profit you today, as you did injustice, that you are partners in the torment.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it, your wishes or your remorse, will not benefit you, blind ones, this day, given that you did wrong, that is to say, [given that] it has become clear to you that you were wrongdoers, through your idolatry in this world, that you, together with your companions, will be sharing in the chastisement (this constitutes the justification, on the basis of an implied l?m [sc. li-annakum …], for the ‘lack of benefit’; idh substitutes for al-yawma, ‘this day’).

Afaanta tusmiAAu assumma awtahdee alAAumya waman kana fee dalalinmubeen
Sahih International
Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
Muhsin Khan
Can you (O Muhammad SAW) make the deaf to hear, or can you guide the blind or him who is in manifest error?
Yusuf Ali
Canst thou then make the deaf to hear, or give direction to the blind or to such as (wander) in manifest error?
Dr. Ghali
Will you (i.e., the Prophet) then make the deaf to hear, or will you guide the blind and him who is in evident error?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Can you, then, make the deaf hear, or can you guide the blind and one who is in manifest error?, in other words, such [individuals] will not believe.
43:41

Transliteration
Fa-imma nathhabanna bikafa-inna minhum muntaqimoon
Sahih International
And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.
Muhsin Khan
And even if We take you (O Muhammad SAW) away, We shall indeed take vengeance on them.
Yusuf Ali
Even if We take thee away, We shall be sure to exact retribution from them,
Dr. Ghali
So, in case ever We definitely cause you to go away, then surely We will be the Avengers against them;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So if (fa-imm?: the conditional particle in has been assimilated herein with an extra m?) We take you away, by making you die before chastising them, then We will take vengeance on them, in the Hereafter;

Transliteration
Aw nuriyannaka allathee waAAadnahumfa-inna AAalayhim muqtadiroon
Sahih International
Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.
Muhsin Khan
Or (if) We show you that wherewith We threaten them, then verily, We have perfect command over them.
Yusuf Ali
Or We shall show thee that (accomplished) which We have promised them: for verily We shall prevail over them.
Dr. Ghali
Or We definitely show you that which We promised them. So, surely We are Supreme Determiners over them.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
or We show you, during your lifetime, that which We have promised them, in the way of chastisement, for surely We have power over, [surely] We are able to chastise, them.

Transliteration
Fastamsik billatheeoohiya ilayka innaka AAala siratinmustaqeem
Sahih International
So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.
Muhsin Khan
So hold you (O Muhammad SAW) fast to that which is inspired in you. Verily, you are on a Straight Path.
Yusuf Ali
So hold thou fast to the Revelation sent down to thee; verily thou art on a Straight Way.
Dr. Ghali
So uphold steadfastly that which has been revealed to you; surely you are upon a straight Path.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So hold fast to that which has been revealed to you, namely, the Qur’?n; surely you are on a straight path, [a straight] way.
43:44
43:44
Transliteration
Wa-innahu lathikrun laka waliqawmikawasawfa tus-aloon
Sahih International
And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.
Muhsin Khan
And verily, this (the Quran) is indeed a Reminder for you (O Muhammad SAW) and your people (Quraish people, or your followers), and you will be questioned (about it).
Yusuf Ali
The (Qur'an) is indeed the message, for thee and for thy people; and soon shall ye (all) be brought to account.
Dr. Ghali
And surely it is indeed a Remembrance to you and to your people, and surely you (all) will eventually be questioned (about it).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it is indeed a Reminder, an honour, for you and for your people, as it has been revealed in their language. And you will [eventually] be questioned, about [the extent of] your fulfilling your duty towards it.

Transliteration
Was-al man arsalna minqablika min rusulina ajaAAalna min dooni arrahmanialihatan yuAAbadoon
Sahih International
And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?
Muhsin Khan
And ask (O Muhammad SAW) those of Our Messengers whom We sent before you: "Did We ever appoint aliha (gods) to be worshipped besides the Most Beneficent (Allah)?"
Yusuf Ali
And question thou our messengers whom We sent before thee; did We appoint any deities other than (Allah) Most Gracious, to be worshipped?
Dr. Ghali
And ask the ones of Our Messengers We sent before you. Have We made, apart from The All-Merciful, gods to be worshiped?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you: Did We [ever] appoint, besides the Compassionate One, that is to say, [any] other than Him, gods to be worshipped? It is said that this is to be understood literally, in other words, that God gathered for him all the messengers on the Night [of the] Journey; but it is also said that this meant [that he should ask] any communities belonging to either of the two Peoples of the Scripture. According to one of the two opinions, he never asked [anyone] since the point of this command to ask is to affirm to the idolaters of Quraysh that no messenger or scripture ever came from God with the command to worship [any] other than God.

Transliteration
Walaqad arsalna moosa bi-ayatinaila firAAawna wamala-ihi faqala innee rasoolu rabbialAAalameen
Sahih International
And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."
Muhsin Khan
And indeed We did send Musa (Moses) with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) to Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his chiefs (inviting them to Allah's Religion of Islam) He said: "Verily, I am a Messenger of the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)."
Yusuf Ali
We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds."
Dr. Ghali
And indeed We already sent M?asu (Moses) with Our signs to Firaawn (Pharaoh) and his chiefs. So he said, "Surely I am the Messenger of The Lord of the worlds."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his council, namely, the Egyptians (al-Qibt), and he said, ‘I am indeed the messenger of the Lord of the Worlds’.
43:47

Transliteration
Falamma jaahum bi-ayatinaitha hum minha yadhakoon
Sahih International
But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.
Muhsin Khan
But when he came to them with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) behold! They laughed at them.
Yusuf Ali
But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them.
Dr. Ghali
Yet, as soon as he came to them with Our signs, only then did they laugh at them.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But when he brought them Our signs, those proving his mission [from God], behold! they laughed at them.
43:48

Transliteration
Wama nureehim min ayatin illahiya akbaru min okhtiha waakhathnahum bilAAathabilaAAallahum yarjiAAoon
Sahih International
And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].
Muhsin Khan
And not an Ayah (sign, etc.) We showed them but it was greater than its fellow, and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn [from their polytheism to Allah's Religion (Islamic Monotheism)].
Yusuf Ali
We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us).
Dr. Ghali
And in no way did We show them any sign except that it was greater than its sister sign; and We took (hold) of them with the torment, that possibly they would return.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We never showed them a sign, from among the signs of chastisement, such as the flood, which was when the waters [of the Nile] penetrated their dwellings and for seven days rose as high as their throats as they sat, or [the chastisement of] the locusts, but it was greater than the one before it, the one immediately preceding it. And We seized them with chastisement, that perhaps they might recant, their disbelief.
43:49

Transliteration
Waqaloo ya ayyuha asahiruodAAu lana rabbaka bima AAahida AAindaka innanalamuhtadoon
Sahih International
And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."
Muhsin Khan
And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)."
Yusuf Ali
And theysaid, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance."
Dr. Ghali
And they said, "O you sorcerer, invoke your Lord for us by what He has covenanted in your presence. Surely we (ourselves) will indeed be right-guided."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they said, to Moses, upon seeing the chastisement, ‘O sorcerer! — that is to say, ‘[O] knowledgeable, perfect one’, since for them sorcery was an awesome [form of] knowledge — supplicate your Lord for us by the covenant that He has made with you, [to the effect] that He would relieve us from chastisement if we believe. Assuredly we will be guided’, that is to say, [we will become] believers.
43:50

Transliteration
Falamma kashafna AAanhumualAAathaba itha hum yankuthoon
Sahih International
But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.
Muhsin Khan
But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them).
Yusuf Ali
But when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word.
Dr. Ghali
Yet, as soon as We lifted off them the torment, only then did they breach (their promise).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But as soon as We relieved them, by the supplication of Moses, from the chastisement, behold! they had broken their pledge, reneging on their covenant and persisting in their disbelief.

Transliteration
Wanada firAAawnu fee qawmihi qalaya qawmi alaysa lee mulku misra wahathihial-anharu tajree min tahtee afala tubsiroon
Sahih International
And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?
Muhsin Khan
And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then?
Yusuf Ali
And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then?
Dr. Ghali
And Firaawn (Pharaoh) called out upon his people (and) said, "O my people, is not the kingdom of Misr (i.e., Egypt) mine, and are not these rivers running from beneath me? Do you not then behold?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And Pharaoh proclaimed, boastfully, among his people, ‘O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers, of the Nile, flowing beneath me?, that is to say, beneath my palaces. Do you not perceive?, my magnificence.

Transliteration
Am ana khayrun min hatha allatheehuwa maheenun wala yakadu yubeen
Sahih International
Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?
Muhsin Khan
"Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly?
Yusuf Ali
"Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly?
Dr. Ghali
Or even am I (not) more charitable (i.e., better) than this (fellow), who is contemptile and almost cannot make (his meaning) evident?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Or, do you perceive, in which case, am I not better than this one, namely, Moses, who is contemptible, feeble and lowly, and who can scarcely speak clearly?, [who can scarcely] articulate his speech, because of his lisp — which was the result of his [accidentally] placing a hot coal in his mouth when he was a child.
43:53

Transliteration
Falawla olqiya AAalayhi aswiratun minthahabin aw jaa maAAahu almala-ikatumuqtarineen
Sahih International
Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"
Muhsin Khan
"Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?"
Yusuf Ali
"Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?"
Dr. Ghali
So, had armlets of gold been cast (i.e., bestoned on him) on him, or Angels had come with him in comradeship!"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Why then, if he were being truthful, have bracelets of gold (as?wira, is the plural of aswira, which is the plural of siw?r, similar [in pattern] to [ghur?b] aghriba) not been cast on him — as according to their custom with those whom they made their leaders, dressing them with gold bracelets and gold necklaces — or the angels not come with him one after the other?’, in succession, to testify to his truthfulness.
43:54

Transliteration
Fastakhaffa qawmahu faataAAoohuinnahum kanoo qawman fasiqeen
Sahih International
So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah ].
Muhsin Khan
Thus he [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] befooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. Verily, they were ever a people who were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).
Yusuf Ali
Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah).
Dr. Ghali
Then he induced levity (i.e., missed his people) on his people, so they obeyed him; surely they were an immoral people.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Thus did he, Pharaoh, persuade, incite, his people and they obeyed him, in his wish that Moses be denied. They were truly an immoral folk.

Falamma asafoonaintaqamna minhum faaghraqnahum ajmaAAeen

And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.

So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all.

When at length they provoked Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all.

Then as soon as they provoked Our anger, (Or: behaved foolishly towards Us) We took vengeance on them; so We drowned them all together;

So when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them and drowned them all.

FajaAAalnahum salafan wamathalan lil-akhireen

And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.

And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations.

And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages.

So We made them a bygone (precedent) and a similitude to the later (generations).

And We made them a thing past (salaf, is the plural of s?lif, similar [in pattern] to kh?dim, khadam) that is to say, a precedent, as a lesson, and an example for others, after them, that they [posterity] might take their predicament as a lesson and so not engage in actions similar to theirs.

Walamma duriba ibnu maryamamathalan itha qawmuka minhu yasiddoon
Sahih International
And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.
Muhsin Khan
And when the son of Maryam (Mary) is quoted as an example [i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus) is worshipped like their idols), behold! Your people cry aloud (laugh out at the example).
Yusuf Ali
When (Jesus) the son of Mary is held up as an example, behold, thy people raise a clamour thereat (in ridicule)!
Dr. Ghali
And as soon as the son of Maryam (levity (Son of Mary, ) is struck as a similitude, only then have your people clamored aloud thereat.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And when the son of Mary is cited as an example — after God’s [following] words were revealed: ‘Truly you and what you worship besides God shall be fuel for Hell’ [Q. 21:98] and the idolaters said, ‘We are satisfied that our gods be together with Jesus [in Hell], for he too was worshipped besides God’ — behold! your people, that is, the idolaters, laugh at it, at this example — they clamour with joy at what they hear.

Waqaloo aalihatunakhayrun am huwa ma daraboohu laka illajadalan bal hum qawmun khasimoon
Sahih International
And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
Muhsin Khan
And say: "Are our aliha (gods) better or is he ['Iesa (Jesus)]?" They quoted not the above example except for argument. Nay! But they are a quarrelsome people. [(See VV. 21:97-101) - The Quran.]
Yusuf Ali
And they say, "Are our gods best, or he?" This they set forth to thee, only by way of disputation: yea, they are a contentious people.
Dr. Ghali
And they have said, "Are our gods more charitable, or rather he? In no way have they struck (the similitude) to you except in dispute; no indeed, (but) they are a people, (who are) constant adversaries.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they say, ‘Are our gods better or he?’, Jesus. We are satisfied that our gods be [in the same predicament] with him. They only cite this, that is, the example, to you for the sake of contention, [merely] arguing with falsehood, for they know that [the particle] m? [of wa-m? ta‘bud?na, ‘and what you worship’] refers [only] to non-rational beings and cannot therefore include Jesus, peace be upon him. Nay, but they are a contentious lot, an extremely disputatious folk.

In huwa illa AAabdun anAAamnaAAalayhi wajaAAalnahu mathalan libanee isra-eel
Sahih International
Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
Muhsin Khan
He ['Iesa (Jesus)] was not more than a slave. We granted Our Favour to him, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel (i.e. his creation without a father).
Yusuf Ali
He was no more than a servant: We granted Our favour to him, and We made him an example to the Children of Israel.

Decidedly he is nothing except a bondman We favored, and We made him to be a similitude to the Seeds (Or: sons) of Israel)

He, Jesus, is only a servant [of Ours] on whom We bestowed favour, through prophethood, and We made him, by his [coming into] being without a father, an exemplar for the Children of Israel, that is to say, like an example because of the wondrousness of his case, one from which one is able to infer God’s power, exalted be He, to do whatever He will.

Walaw nashao lajaAAalna minkummala-ikatan fee al-ardi yakhlufoon

And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.

And if it were Our Will, We would have [destroyed you (mankind) all, and] made angels to replace you on the earth. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol:25, Page 89].

And if it were Our Will, We could make angels from amongst you, succeeding each other on the earth.

And if We had (so) decided, We would indeed have made from among you Angels to be successors in the earth.

And had We willed, We would have appointed among you, instead of you, angels to be [your] successors in the earth, by Our destroying you.

Wa-innahu laAAilmun lissaAAatifala tamtarunna biha wattabiAAooni hathasiratun mustaqeem

And indeed, Jesus will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.
Muhsin Khan
And he ['Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)] shall be a known sign for (the coming of) the Hour (Day of Resurrection) [i.e. 'Iesa's (Jesus) descent on the earth] . Therefore have no doubt concerning it (i.e. the Day of Resurrection). And follow Me (Allah) (i.e. be obedient to Allah and do what He orders you to do, O mankind)! This is the Straight Path (of Islamic Monotheism, leading to Allah and to His Paradise).
Yusuf Ali
And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow ye Me: this is a Straight Way.

And surely it is indeed knowledge of the Hour; so definitely do not wrangle about it, and closely follow Me. This is a straight Path.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And indeed he, that is, Jesus, is a portent of the Hour — [the arrival of] it is known by the sending down of him — so do not doubt it (tamtarunna: the indicative n?n has been omitted for apocopation together with the w?w of the [third] person [plural] on account of two unvowelled consonants coming together) but, say to them: ‘Follow me, in the affirmation of [God’s] Oneness. This, to which I command you, is a straight path’.

Wala yasuddannakumu ashshaytanuinnahu lakum AAaduwwun mubeen
Sahih International
And never let Satan avert you. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
Muhsin Khan
And let not Shaitan (Satan) hinder you (from the right religion, i.e. Islamic Monotheism), Verily, he (Satan) to you is a plain enemy.
Yusuf Ali
Let not the Evil One hinder you: for he is to you an enemy avowed.
Dr. Ghali
And definitely do not let Shaytan (The) ever-vicious (one), i.e., the Devil) bar you; (i.e., the believers) surely he is for you an evident enemy.

And do not let Satan bar you, [do not let him] turn you away from God’s religion. Indeed he is a manifest enemy of yours, one whose enmity is manifest.

Walamma jaa AAeesa bilbayyinatiqala qad ji/tukum bilhikmati wali-obayyinalakum baAAda allathee takhtalifoona feehi fattaqooAllaha waateeAAoon

And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, "I have come to you with wisdom and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ, so fear Allah and obey me.

And when 'Iesa (Jesus) came with (Our) clear Proofs, he said: "I have come to you with Al-Hikmah (Prophethood), and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) in which you differ, therefore fear Allah and obey me,

When Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said: "Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me.

And as soon as Isa (Jesus) came with the supreme evidence (s), he said, "I have readily come to you with (the) Wisdom, and that I may make evident to you some of that concerning which you differ; so be pious to Allah, and obey me.

And when Jesus came with the clear signs, the miracles and the prescriptions [of the Law], he said, ‘Verily I have brought you wisdom, prophethood and the prescriptions of the Gospel, and [I have come] to make clear to you some of what you are at variance over, in the way of the rulings of the Torah for what concerns religion and otherwise — and he [indeed] made clear to them the matters of religion. So fear God and obey me.

Inna Allaha huwa rabbee warabbukum faAAbudoohuhatha siratun mustaqeem
Sahih International
Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path."

"Verily, Allah! He is my Lord (God) and your Lord (God). So worship Him (Alone). This is the (only) Straight Path (i.e. Allah's religion of true Islamic Monotheism)."
Yusuf Ali
"For Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord: so worship ye Him: this is a Straight Way."

Surely Allah, Ever He, is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him. This is a straight Path."

Fakhtalafa al-ahzabumin baynihim fawaylun lillatheena thalamoomin AAathabi yawmin aleem

But the denominations from among them differed [and separated], so woe to those who have wronged from the punishment of a painful Day.

But the sects from among themselves differed. So woe to those who do wrong (by ascribing things to 'Iesa (Jesus) that are not true) from the torment of a painful Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)!
Yusuf Ali
But sects from among themselves fell into disagreement: then woe to the wrong-doers, from the Penalty of a Grievous Day!
Dr. Ghali
Yet the (allied) parties differed among themselves; so woe to the ones who did injustice from the torment of a painful Day.

But the factions differed among themselves, regarding [the status of] Jesus: was he God, or the son of God, or the third of Three [deities]? So woe (waylun is a term implying chastisement) to those who do wrong, [those] who blaspheme in what they say about Jesus, from the chastisement of a painful day.

Hal yanthuroona illa assaAAataan ta/tiyahum baghtatan wahum la yashAAuroon
Sahih International
Are they waiting except for the Hour to come upon them suddenly while they perceive not?
Muhsin Khan
Do they only wait for the Hour that it shall come upon them suddenly, while they perceive not?
Yusuf Ali
Do they only wait for the Hour - that it should come on them all of a sudden, while they perceive not?
Dr. Ghali
Are they looking for (anything) except the Hour, that it will come to them suddenly, when they are not aware?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Are they, that is, the Meccan disbelievers, awaiting anything, that is to say — they are [in fact] awaiting nothing — but that Hour should come upon them (an ta’tiyahum substitutes for al-s?‘ata, ‘the Hour’) suddenly, unexpectedly, while they are unaware?, of the time of its coming beforehand.

Al-akhillao yawma-ithin baAAduhumlibaAAdin AAaduwwun illa almuttaqeen

Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous

Friends on that Day will be foes one to another except Al-Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2).
Yusuf Ali
Friends on that day will be foes, one to another,- except the Righteous.
Dr. Ghali
Close fellows upon that Day will be enemies to one another, (Literally: some of them to some (others) except the pious.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Friends, [who shared] in acts of disobedience in this world, will, on that day, the Day of Resurrection (yawma’idhin is semantically connected to His [following] words) be foes of one another, except for the God-fearing, those who have love for one another through their [commitment to] obedience of God — such will be friends [on that day] and it will be said to them:

Ya AAibadi la khawfunAAalaykumu alyawma wala antum tahzanoon

[To whom Allah will say], "O My servants, no fear will there be concerning you this Day, nor will you grieve,

(It will be said to the true believers of Islamic Monotheism): My worshippers! No fear shall be on you this Day, nor shall you grieve,

[You] who believed in Our verses and were Muslims.

(You) who believed in Our Ayat (proofs, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and were Muslims (i.e. who submit totally to Allah's Will, and believe in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism).

(Being) those who have believed in Our Signs and bowed (their wills to Ours) in Islam.

The ones who believed in Our signs and were Muslims.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those who believed (alladh?na ?man? adjectivally qualifies ‘ib?d?, ‘My servants’) in Our signs — the Qur’?n — and had submitted themselves [to Me].

Odkhuloo aljannata antum waazwajukumtuhbaroon

Enter Paradise, you and your kinds, delighted."

Enter Paradise, you and your wives, in happiness.

Enter ye the Garden, ye and your wives, in (beauty and) rejoicing.

"Enter the Garden, you and your spouses, to be made jubilant!"

Enter Paradise, you (antum, the subject) and your spouses, your wives, to be made joyful, to be made happy and to be honoured (tuhbar?na, ‘to be made joyful’, is the predicate of the [above] subject).

Yutafu AAalayhim bisihafinmin thahabin waakwabin wafeeha matashtaheehi al-anfusu watalaththu al-aAAyunu waantum feehakhalidoon

Circulated among them will be plates and vessels of gold. And therein is whatever the souls desire and [what] delights the eyes, and you will abide therein eternally.

Trays of gold and cups will be passed round them, (there will be) therein all that the one's inner-selves could desire, all that the eyes could delight in, and you will abide therein forever.
Yusuf Ali
To them will be passed round, dishes and goblets of gold: there will be there all that the souls could desire, all that their ayes could delight in: and ye shall abide therein (for eye).
Dr. Ghali
(There) will be passed round them platters of gold and goblets, and therein are whatever the selves crave for, and the eyes (find) delicious. "And you are therein eternally (abiding).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They will be served from all around with [large] dishes of gold and goblets (akw?b is the plural of k?b, which is a [drinking] vessel without a handle so that the person can drink from whichever side he wants) and therein will be whatever souls desire, to relish, and eyes delight in, contemplating, and you will abide in it [forever].

Watilka aljannatu allatee oorithtumoohabima kuntum taAAmaloon
Sahih International
And that is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do.
Muhsin Khan
This is the Paradise which you have been made to inherit because of your deeds which you used to do (in the life of the world).
Yusuf Ali
Such will be the Garden of which ye are made heirs for your (good) deeds (in life).
Dr. Ghali
And that is the Garden which you are made to inherit for whatever you were doing.

And that is the Paradise which you have been given to inherit [as the reward] for what you used to do.

Lakum feeha fakihatunkatheeratun minha ta/kuloon

For you therein is much fruit from which you will eat.

Therein for you will be fruits in plenty, of which you will eat (as you desire).

Ye shall have therein abundance of fruit, from which ye shall have satisfaction.

Therein you have many fruits, whereof you eat."

Therein are abundant fruits for you, from which, that is, parts of which, you will eat’, for whatever is eaten is [immediately] replaced [with more of the same].

Inna almujrimeena fee AAathabijahannama khalidoon

Indeed, the criminals will be in the punishment of Hell, abiding eternally.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, the Mujrimun (criminals, sinners, disbelievers, etc.) will be in the torment of Hell to abide therein forever.
Yusuf Ali
The sinners will be in the Punishment of Hell, to dwell therein (for aye):

Surely the criminals are in the torment of Hell eternally (abiding).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed the guilty will abide [forever] in the chastisement of Hell —

Transliteration
La yufattaru AAanhum wahum feehimublisoon
Sahih International
It will not be allowed to subside for them, and they, therein, are in despair.

(The torment) will not be lightened for them, and they will be plunged into destruction with deep regrets, sorrows and in despair therein.
Yusuf Ali
Nowise will the (Punishment) be lightened for them, and in despair will they be there overwhelmed.

It is not mitigated for them, and therein they will be dumbfounded.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
it will not be lightened for them and they will be [utterly] despondent in it, silent in despair.

Wama thalamnahumwalakin kanoo humu aththalimeen

And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.

We wronged them not, but they were the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, etc.).

Nowise shall We be unjust to them: but it is they who have been unjust themselves.

And in no way did We do injustice to them, but it is they who were the unjust.

And We never wronged them, but they themselves were the wrongdoers.

Transliteration
Wanadaw ya maliku liyaqdiAAalayna rabbuka qala innakum makithoon
Sahih International
And they will call, "O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Indeed, you will remain."
Muhsin Khan
And they will cry: "O Malik (Keeper of Hell)! Let your Lord make an end of us." He will say: "Verily you shall abide forever."
Yusuf Ali
They will cry: "O Malik! would that thy Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Nay, but ye shall abide!"
Dr. Ghali
And they will call out, "O Malik, (keeper of Hell) let your Lord decree upon us!" He will say, "Surely you are staying."

And they will call out, ‘O M?lik — the [name of the] Keeper of the Fire — let your Lord finish us off!’, let Him make us die. He will say, after [the passing of] a thousand years, ‘You will surely remain!’, you will remain in the chastisement forever.

Laqad ji/nakum bilhaqqiwalakinna aktharakum lilhaqqi karihoon
Sahih International
We had certainly brought you the truth, but most of you, to the truth, were averse.
Muhsin Khan
Indeed We have brought the truth (Muhammad SAW with the Quran), to you, but most of you have a hatred for the truth.
Yusuf Ali
Verily We have brought the Truth to you: but most of you have a hatred for Truth.
Dr. Ghali
Indeed We have already come to you with the Truth, but most of you are hating the Truth.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
God, exalted be He, says: ‘Verily We brought you, O people of Mecca, the truth, by the tongue of the Messenger, but most of you were averse to the truth’.

Am abramoo amran fa-inna mubrimoon
Sahih International
Or have they devised [some] affair? But indeed, We are devising [a plan].
Muhsin Khan
Or have they plotted some plan? Then We too are planning.
Yusuf Ali
What! have they settled some plan (among themselves)? But it is We Who settle things.
Dr. Ghali
Or (even) have they ratified a command? (i.e., A plot against you and the believers) Then surely We will be ratifying (too).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Or have they, that is, the disbelievers of Mecca, contrived, consolidated, some matter?, in plotting against the Prophet Muhammad (s). For We [too] are indeed contriving, [We too] are consolidating Our plan to destroy them.

Am yahsaboona anna lanasmaAAu sirrahum wanajwahum bala warusulunaladayhim yaktuboon
Sahih International
Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers are with them recording.

Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private counsel? (Yes We do) and Our Messengers (appointed angels in charge of mankind) are by them, to record.
Yusuf Ali
Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private counsels? Indeed (We do), and Our messengers are by them, to record.
Dr. Ghali
Or (even) do they reckon that We do not hear their secret and their private conferences? Yes indeed, and Our Messengers are close to them writing (everything) down.

Or do they reckon that We do not hear their secret thoughts and their conspiring?, that is to say, what they secretly communicate to others and what they openly conspire about among themselves. Yes indeed!, We hear [all of] that, and Our messengers, the guardians, are with them keeping a record, of that.

Qul in kana lirrahmaniwaladun faana awwalu alAAabideen
Sahih International
Say, [O Muhammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."
Muhsin Khan
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "If the Most Beneficent (Allah) had a son (or children as you pretend), then I am the first of Allah's worshippers [who deny and refute this claim of yours (and the first to believe in Allah Alone and testify that He has no children)]." [Tafsir At-Tabari].
Yusuf Ali
Say: "If (Allah) Most Gracious had a son, I would be the first to worship."
Dr. Ghali
Say, "In case The All-Merciful has a child, then I am the first among the worshippers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Say: ‘If the Compassionate One had a son, hypothetically [speaking], I would have been first among the worshippers, of that son; but it is established that He, exalted be He, does not have a child and thus there can be no worshipping of such [a child].

Subhana rabbi assamawatiwal-ardi rabbi alAAarshi AAamma yasifoon

Exalted is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.
Muhsin Khan
Glorified be the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne! Exalted be He from all that they ascribe (to Him).
Yusuf Ali
Glory to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne (of Authority)! (He is free) from the things they attribute (to him)!
Dr. Ghali
All Extolment be to The Lord of the heavens and the earth, The Lord of the Throne, above whatever they describe."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Glory be to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne (the ‘arsh is the [same as the] kurs?) above what they allege!’, [above] the lies which they speak in ascribing a child to Him.

Fatharhum yakhoodoowayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allatheeyooAAadoon

So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised.

So leave them (alone) to speak nonsense and play until they meet the Day of theirs, which they have been promised.
Yusuf Ali
So leave them to babble and play (with vanities) until they meet that Day of theirs, which they have been promised.
Dr. Ghali
So leave them out to wade (i.e., to become absorbed in) and play until they meet the Day which they are promised.

So leave them to indulge, their falsehoods, and play, in this world of theirs, until they encounter that day of theirs which they are promised, chastisement in, and that is the Day of Resurrection.

Transliteration
Wahuwa allathee fee assama-iilahun wafee al-ardi ilahun wahuwa alhakeemualAAaleem
Sahih International
And it is Allah who is [the only] deity in the heaven, and on the earth [the only] deity. And He is the Wise, the Knowing.
Muhsin Khan
It is He (Allah) Who is the only Ilah (God to be worshipped) in the heaven and the only Ilah (God to be worshipped) on the earth. And He is the All-Wise, the All-Knower.
Yusuf Ali
It is He Who is Allah in heaven and Allah on earth; and He is full of Wisdom and Knowledge.
Dr. Ghali
And He is (The One) Who in the heaven is God, and in the earth is God; and He is The Ever-Wise, the Ever-Knowing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And He it is Who in the heaven is God (fi’l-sam?’i il?hun: pronounce here both hamzas, or drop the first one or softening it into a y?’), in other words, [Who in the heaven] is the Worshipped One, and in the earth is God (both adverbials are semantically connected to what follows); and He is the Wise, in the management of His creatures, the Knower, of their welfare.

And blessed is He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them and with whom is knowledge of the Hour and to whom you will be returned.

And blessed be He to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, and with Whom is the knowledge of the Hour, and to Whom you (all) will be returned.

Wala yamliku allatheenayadAAoona min doonihi ashshafaAAata illaman shahida bilhaqqi wahum yaAAlamoon

And those they invoke besides Him do not possess [power of] intercession; but only those who testify to the truth [can benefit], and they know.

And those whom they invoke instead of Him have no power of intercession; except those who bear witness to the truth (i.e. believed in the Oneness of Allah, and obeyed His Orders), and they know (the facts about the Oneness of Allah).
Yusuf Ali
And those whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession;- only he who bears witness to the Truth, and they know (him).
Dr. Ghali
And the ones they invoke, apart from Him, do not possess (the power) of intercession, excepting him who witnesses to the Truth, and they know it.

And those whom they, the disbelievers, call on, [those whom] they worship, besides Him, that is, besides God, have no power of intercession, for anyone, except those who bear witness to the truth, that is, those who say ‘there is no god except God’, with [full] knowledge, in their hearts of what they have testified to with their tongues — such are Jesus, Ezra, and the angels, who will intercede for believers.

Wala-in saaltahum man khalaqahumlayaqoolunna Allahu faanna yu/fakoon

And if you asked them who created them, they would surely say, " Allah ." So how are they deluded?

And if you ask them who created them, they will surely say: "Allah". How then are they turned away (from the worship of Allah, Who created them)?
Yusuf Ali
If thou ask them, who created them, they will certainly say, Allah: How then are they deluded away (from the Truth)?

And indeed in case you ask them who created them, indeed they will definitely say, " Allah." However then are they diverged (from Truth)?

And if (wa-la-in: the l?m is for oaths) you ask them who created them, they will surely say, ‘God’ (la-yaq?lunna: the indicative n?n and the [plural] person indicator w?w have been omitted). How can they then deviate?, [how] can they be turned away from worshipping God?

Waqeelihi ya rabbi inna haola-iqawmun la yu/minoon

And [ Allah acknowledges] his saying, "O my Lord, indeed these are a people who do not believe."

(Allah has knowledge) of (Prophet Muhammad's) saying: "O my Lord! Verily, these are a people who believe not!"
Yusuf Ali
(Allah has knowledge) of the (Prophet's) cry, "O my Lord! Truly these are people who will not believe!"
Dr. Ghali
And for his (i.e., Allah knows best prophet's saying) oration, "O Lord! Surely these are people who do not believe."

And [as] for his saying: that is, the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (s) (wa-q?lihi is [accusative] dependent because it is a verbal noun followed by an implicit verb, in other words wa-q?la [q?lihi], ‘and he said [his saying]’) ‘O my Lord! These are indeed a people who have no faith’.
43:89

Fasfah AAanhum waqulsalamun fasawfa yaAAlamoon
Sahih International
So turn aside from them and say, "Peace." But they are going to know.
Muhsin Khan
So turn away from them (O Muhammad SAW), and say: Salam (peace)! But they will come to know.
Yusuf Ali
But turn away from them, and say "Peace!" But soon shall they know!
Dr. Ghali
Yet pardon them, and say, "Peace!" Yet eventually they will know.

God, exalted be He, says: Then disregard them, leave [them] be, and say, ‘Peace!’, [I will stay away] from you — this was [revealed] before he was commanded to fight them. For they will [soon] come to know (ya‘lam?na, may also be read as [second person plural] ta‘lam?na, ‘you will [come to] know’), [meant] to threaten them.
