| 45:1 | Sahih International Ha, Meem. Muhsin Khan Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. Dr. Ghali Ha, Mim. (The are the names of letter of the Arabic alphabet, and only Allah knows their meaning here) Tafsir al-Jalalayn H? m?m: God knows best what He means by these [letters]. | | 45:2 | Transliteration Tanzeelu alkitabi mina AllahialAAazeezi alhakeem Sahih International The revelation of the Book is from Allah , the Exalted in Might, the Wise. Muhsin Khan The revelation of the Book (this Quran) is from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. Yusuf Ali The revelation of the Book is from Allah the Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom. Dr. Ghali The successive sending down of the Book is from Allah, The Ever-Mighty, The Ever-Wise. Tafsir al-Jalalayn The revelation of the Book, the Qur’?n (tanz?lu’l-kit?bi, the subject) is from God (mina’Ll?hi, the predicate thereof) the Mighty, in His kingdom, the Wise, in His actions. | | 45:3 | Transliteration Inna fee assamawati wal-ardilaayatin lilmu/mineen Sahih International Indeed, within the heavens and earth are signs for the believers. Muhsin Khan Verily, in the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers. Yusuf Ali Verily in the heavens and the earth, are Signs for those who believe. Dr. Ghali Surely in the heavens and the earth are indeed signs for the believers. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Truly in the heavens and the earth, that is to say, in their creation, there are signs, indicating the power of God and His Oneness, exalted be He, for believers. | | 45:4 | Transliteration Wafee khalqikum wama yabuththu min dabbatinayatun liqawmin yooqinoon Sahih International And in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of moving creatures are signs for people who are certain [in faith]. Muhsin Khan And in your creation, and what He scattered (through the earth) of moving (living) creatures are signs for people who have Faith with certainty. Yusuf Ali And in the creation of yourselves and the fact that animals are scattered (through the earth), are Signs for those of assured Faith. Dr. Ghali And in your creation, and (in every kind of) beast He disseminates are signs for a people who have certitude. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And in your creation, that is to say, and in the creation of every one of you from a sperm-drop, then a blood clot, then an embryo until it becomes a human being; and, [in] the creation of, what He has scattered, [what] He has dispersed throughout the earth, of animals — [d?bba denotes] whatever treads on (yadubbu) the earth of [both] human beings and other [animals] — there are signs for a people who are certain, of the Resurrection; | | 45:5 | Transliteration Wakhtilafi allayli wannahariwama anzala Allahu mina assama-i minrizqin faahya bihi al-arda baAAda mawtihawatasreefi arriyahi ayatunliqawmin yaAAqiloon Sahih International And [in] the alternation of night and day and [in] what Allah sends down from the sky of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and [in His] directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason. Muhsin Khan And in the alternation of night and day, and the provision (rain) that Allah sends down from the sky, and revives therewith the earth after its death, and in the turning about of the winds (i.e. sometimes towards the east or north, and sometimes towards the south or west etc., sometimes bringing glad tidings of rain etc., and sometimes bringing the torment), are signs for a people who understand. Yusuf Ali And in the alternation of Night and Day, and the fact that Allah sends down Sustenance from the sky, and revives therewith the earth after its death, and in the change of the winds,- are Signs for those that are wise. Dr. Ghali And (in) the differences (Or: alternation) between the night and the daytime, and whatever provision Allah sends down from the heaven, so He gives life therewith to the earth after its death, and the (constant) turning about of the winds, there are signs for a people who consider. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and, in, the alternation of night and day, their passing and their arrival, and what God sends down from the heaven [in the way] of provision, rain, for it constitutes a means of provision, with which He revives the earth after it is dead, and the circulation of the winds, its alternation between southerly and northerly, hot and cold, there are signs for a people who understand, proofs and therefore have faith. | | 45:6 | Transliteration Tilka ayatu Allahinatlooha AAalayka bilhaqqi fabi-ayyi hadeethinbaAAda Allahi waayatihi yu/minoon Sahih International These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe? Muhsin Khan These are the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.) of Allah, which We recite to you (O Muhammad SAW) with truth. Then in which speech after Allah and His Ayat will they believe? Yusuf Ali Such are the Signs of Allah, which We rehearse to thee in Truth; then in what exposition will they believe after (rejecting) Allah and His Signs? Dr. Ghali Those are the signs of Allah that We recite to you with the Truth. In which discourse then, after Allah and His signs, (will) they believe? Tafsir al-Jalalayn These, mentioned signs, are the signs of God, the proofs of His that indicate His Oneness, which We recite, relate, to you with truth (bi’l-haqqi is semantically connected to natl?, ‘We recite’). So in what [kind of] discourse then, after God, that is to say, [after] His discourse, namely, the Qur’?n, and His signs, His definitive arguments, will they, that is, the disbelievers of Mecca, believe? In other words: they will not believe [in anything] (a variant reading [for yu’min?na, ‘they believe’] has tu’min?na, ‘you believe’). | | 45:7 | Transliteration Waylun likulli affakin atheem Sahih International Woe to every sinful liar Muhsin Khan Woe to every sinful liar, Yusuf Ali Woe to each sinful dealer in Falsehoods: Dr. Ghali Woe to every constantly vicious (and persistent) falsifier, . Tafsir al-Jalalayn Woe (waylun is an expression implying chastisement) to every sinful liar, | | 45:8 | Transliteration YasmaAAu ayati Allahitutla AAalayhi thumma yusirru mustakbiran kaan lamyasmaAAha fabashshirhu biAAathabin aleem Sahih International Who hears the verses of Allah recited to him, then persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful punishment. Muhsin Khan Who hears the Verses of Allah (being) recited to him, yet persists with pride as if he heard them not. So announce to him a painful torment! Yusuf Ali He hears the Signs of Allah rehearsed to him, yet is obstinate and lofty, as if he had not heard them: then announce to him a Penalty Grievous! Dr. Ghali (Who) hears the signs (i.e. ayat, signs or verses) of Allah recited to him; thereafter he persists in waxing proud, as if he has not heard them; so give him the (good) tidings of a painful torment. Tafsir al-Jalalayn who hears the signs of God, the Qur’?n, being recited to him, then persists, in his disbelief, arrogantly, disdainful of faith, as if he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful chastisement. | | 45:9 | Transliteration Wa-itha AAalima min ayatinashay-an ittakhathaha huzuwan ola-ika lahumAAathabun muheen Sahih International And when he knows anything of Our verses, he takes them in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment. Muhsin Khan And when he learns something of Our Verses (this Quran), he makes them a jest. For such there will be a humiliating torment. Yusuf Ali And when he learns something of Our Signs, he takes them in jest: for such there will be a humiliating Penalty. Dr. Ghali And when he knows anything of Our signs, he takes them to himself in mockery; those will have a degrading torment. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And should he come to know anything of Our signs, namely, the Qur’?n, he takes them in mockery. For such, liars — there is a degrading chastisement. | | 45:10 | Transliteration Min wara-ihim jahannamu walayughnee AAanhum ma kasaboo shay-an wala maittakhathoo min dooni Allahi awliyaa walahumAAathabun AAatheem Sahih International Before them is Hell, and what they had earned will not avail them at all nor what they had taken besides Allah as allies. And they will have a great punishment. Muhsin Khan In front of them there is Hell, and that which they have earned will be of no profit to them, nor (will be of any profit to them) those whom they have taken as Auliya' (protectors, helpers, etc.) besides Allah. And theirs will be a great torment. Yusuf Ali In front of them is Hell: and of no profit to them is anything they may have earned, nor any protectors they may have taken to themselves besides Allah: for them is a tremendous Penalty. Dr. Ghali Beyond them (is) Hell; and whatever they have earned will not avail them anything, nor (avail) the ones they take to themselves as constant patrons apart from Allah; and they will have a tremendous torment. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Beyond them, that is to say, ahead of them — because they are [still] in this world — is Hell, and that which they have earned, of wealth and deeds, will not avail them in any way, nor those whom they took besides God, that is, idols, as patrons. And for them there will be a great chastisement. | | 45:11 | Transliteration Hatha hudan wallatheenakafaroo bi-ayati rabbihim lahum AAathabunmin rijzin aleem Sahih International This [Qur'an] is guidance. And those who have disbelieved in the verses of their Lord will have a painful punishment of foul nature. Muhsin Khan This (Quran) is a guidance. And those who disbelieve in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord, for them there is a painful torment of Rijz (a severe kind of punishment). Yusuf Ali This is (true) Guidance and for those who reject the Signs of their Lord, is a grievous Penalty of abomination. Dr. Ghali This is guidance; and the ones who have disbelieved in the signs of their Lord will have a painful torment of chastisement. Tafsir al-Jalalayn This, that is, the Qur’?n, is a guidance, from error; and those who disbelieve in the signs of their Lord, for them there will be a torture, a lot, of a painful, an excruciating, chastisement. | | 45:12 | Transliteration Allahu allathee sakhkharalakumu albahra litajriya alfulku feehi bi-amrihiwalitabtaghoo min fadlihi walaAAallakum tashkuroon Sahih International It is Allah who subjected to you the sea so that ships may sail upon it by His command and that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful. Muhsin Khan Allah it is He Who has subjected to you the sea, that ships may sail through it by His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may be thankful, Yusuf Ali It is Allah Who has subjected the sea to you, that ships may sail through it by His command, that ye may seek of his Bounty, and that ye may be grateful. Dr. Ghali Allah is He Who has subjected to you the sea that the ships may run in it at His Command, and that you may seek of His Grace, and that possibly you would thank (Him) Tafsir al-Jalalayn God it is Who disposed for you the sea so that the ships may sail upon it by His command, by His permission, and that you may seek, that you may request, by way of trade, of His bounty, and that perhaps you may give thanks. | | 45:13 | Transliteration Wasakhkhara lakum ma fee assamawatiwama fee al-ardi jameeAAan minhu inna fee thalikalaayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroon Sahih International And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. Muhsin Khan And has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth; it is all as a favour and kindness from Him. Verily, in it are signs for a people who think deeply. Yusuf Ali And He has subjected to you, as from Him, all that is in the heavens and on earth: Behold, in that are Signs indeed for those who reflect. Dr. Ghali And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, all together from Him. Surely in that are signs for a people who meditate. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And He has disposed for you whatever is in the heavens, of sun, moon, stars, water and otherwise, and whatever is in the earth, of animals, trees, vegetation, rivers and otherwise, that is to say, He created [all] that for your benefit, all (jam?‘an is for emphasis) being from Him (minhu is a circumstantial qualifier, that is to say, He has disposed them as something from Him, exalted be He). Surely in that there are signs for a people who reflect, on them and therefore believe. | | 45:14 | Transliteration Qul lillatheena amanooyaghfiroo lillatheena la yarjoona ayyama Allahiliyajziya qawman bima kanoo yaksiboon Sahih International Say, [O Muhammad], to those who have believed that they [should] forgive those who expect not the days of Allah so that He may recompense a people for what they used to earn. Muhsin Khan Say (O Muhammad SAW) to the believers to forgive those who (harm them and) hope not for the Days of Allah (i.e. His Recompense), that He may recompense people according to what they have earned (i.e. to punish these disbelievers, who harm the believers). Yusuf Ali Tell those who believe, to forgive those who do not look forward to the Days of Allah: It is for Him to recompense (for good or ill) each People according to what they have earned. Dr. Ghali Say to the ones who have believed that they forgive the ones who do not hope for the Days of Allah, that He may recompense a people for what they used to earn. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Tell those who believe to forgive those who do not anticipate, [those who do not] fear, the days of God, the events which He precipitates, that is to say, forgive the disbelievers the harm which they have caused you — this was before the command to struggle against them [had been revealed] — that He, God, may requite (a variant reading [for li-yajziya] has li-najziya, ‘that We may requite’) a people for what they used to earn, when they used to forgive disbelievers the harm which they did. | | 45:15 | Transliteration Man AAamila salihanfalinafsihi waman asaa faAAalayha thumma ilarabbikum turjaAAoon Sahih International Whoever does a good deed - it is for himself; and whoever does evil - it is against the self. Then to your Lord you will be returned. Muhsin Khan Whosoever does a good deed, it is for his ownself, and whosoever does evil, it is against (his ownself). Then to your Lord you will be made to return. Yusuf Ali If any one does a righteous deed, it ensures to the benefit of his own soul; if he does evil, it works against (his own soul). In the end will ye (all) be brought back to your Lord. Dr. Ghali Whoever does righteousness, then it is for his self; and whoever does odious (deeds), then it is against it; (i.e., the self) thereafter to your Lord you will be returned. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Whoever acts righteously, it is for [the benefit of] his own soul, that he acts [so], and whoever does evil, it is to the detriment thereof, that he has done evil; then to your Lord you will be returned, [with your Lord] you shall end up, whereupon He will requite the one of righteous deeds and the evildoer. | | 45:16 | Transliteration Walaqad atayna banee isra-eelaalkitaba walhukma wannubuwwatawarazaqnahum mina attayyibati wafaddalnahumAAala alAAalameen Sahih International And We did certainly give the Children of Israel the Scripture and judgement and prophethood, and We provided them with good things and preferred them over the worlds. Muhsin Khan And indeed We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, and the understanding of the Scripture and its laws, and the Prophethood; and provided them with good things, and preferred them above the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns) (of their time, during that period), Yusuf Ali We did aforetime grant to the Children of Israel the Book the Power of Command, and Prophethood; We gave them, for Sustenance, things good and pure; and We favoured them above the nations. Dr. Ghali And indeed We already brought the Seeds (Or: sons) of Israel) the Book, and the Judgment, and the Prophethood, and We provided them with good things, and We graced them over the worlds. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And verily We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, the Torah, and [the means of] judgement, therewith between people, and prophethood, for Moses and Aaron among them, and We provided them with the good things, the lawful things, such as manna and quails, and We favoured them above [all] worlds, the worlds of their time, [that is, above all other] rational beings. | | 45:17 | Transliteration Waataynahum bayyinatinmina al-amri fama ikhtalafoo illa min baAAdi majaahumu alAAilmu baghyan baynahum inna rabbaka yaqdeebaynahum yawma alqiyamati feema kanoo feehiyakhtalifoon Sahih International And We gave them clear proofs of the matter [of religion]. And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ. Muhsin Khan And gave them clear proofs in matters [by revealing to them the Taurat (Torah)]. And they differed not until after the knowledge came to them, through envy among themselves. Verily, Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about that wherein they used to differ. Yusuf Ali And We granted them Clear Signs in affairs (of Religion): it was only after knowledge had been granted to them that they fell into schisms, through insolent envy among themselves. Verily thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment as to those matters in which they set up differences. Dr. Ghali And We brought them supreme evidence (s) of the Command; so in no way did they differ among themselves except even after the knowledge had come to them, (they) being inequitable among themselves. Surely your Lord will decree between them on the Day of the Resurrection concerning that wherein they used to differ. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And We gave them clear illustrations of the commandment, the commandment of religion, in the way of what is lawful or unlawful, and the Mission of Muhammad (s), upon whom be the most excellent blessings and peace. And they did not differ, regarding his Mission, except after the knowledge had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves, that is to say, because of some rivalry that came about among them, out of envy of him. Surely your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that in which they used to differ. | | 45:18 | Transliteration Thumma jaAAalnaka AAalashareeAAatin mina al-amri fattabiAAha walatattabiAA ahwaa allatheena la yaAAlamoon Sahih International Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know. Muhsin Khan Then We have put you (O Muhammad SAW) on a plain way of (Our) commandment [like the one which We commanded Our Messengers before you (i.e. legal ways and laws of the Islamic Monotheism)]. So follow you that (Islamic Monotheism and its laws), and follow not the desires of those who know not. [Tafsir At-Tabari Vol. 25, Page 146]. Yusuf Ali Then We put thee on the (right) Way of Religion: so follow thou that (Way), and follow not the desires of those who know not. Dr. Ghali Thereafter We have made you upon a Law of the Command; (i.e., a religion from our command to Jibril (Gabriel) so follow it closely, and do not ever follow the prejudices of the ones who do not know. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Then We set you, O Muhammad (s), upon a [clear] course, [a clear] way, of the commandment, the commandment of religion; so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know, in worshipping other than God. | | 45:19 | Transliteration Innahum lan yughnoo AAanka mina Allahishay-an wa-inna aththalimeena baAAduhumawliyao baAAdin wallahu waliyyualmuttaqeen Sahih International Indeed, they will never avail you against Allah at all. And indeed, the wrongdoers are allies of one another; but Allah is the protector of the righteous. Muhsin Khan Verily, they can avail you nothing against Allah (if He wants to punish you). Verily, the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, etc.) are Auliya' (protectors, helpers, etc.) to one another, but Allah is the Wali (Helper, Protector, etc.) of the Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2). Yusuf Ali They will be of no use to thee in the sight of Allah: it is only Wrong-doers (that stand as) protectors, one to another: but Allah is the Protector of the Righteous. Dr. Ghali Surely they will never avail you anything against Allah; and surely (some) of the unjust are patrons one of the other; (Literally: are patrons of some (others) and Allah is the Ever-Patronizing Patron of the pious. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Assuredly they will not avail, they [will not] protect, you in any way against God, against His chastisement. And assuredly the wrongdoers, the disbelievers, are allies of one another; but God is the ally [only] of the God-fearing. | | 45:20 | Transliteration Hatha basa-iru linnasiwahudan warahmatun liqawmin yooqinoon Sahih International This [Qur'an] is enlightenment for mankind and guidance and mercy for a people who are certain [in faith]. Muhsin Khan This (Quran) is a clear insight and evidence for mankind, and a guidance and a mercy for people who have Faith with certainty. Yusuf Ali These are clear evidences to men and a Guidance and Mercy to those of assured Faith. Dr. Ghali This (presents) demonstrations for mankind, and a guidance, and a mercy for a people who have certitude. Tafsir al-Jalalayn This, Qur’?n, is [a set of] insights for mankind, guideposts with which they can discern [God’s] rulings and legal proscriptions, and guidance and mercy for a people who have certainty, with regard to the [truth of the] Resurrection. | | 45:21 | Transliteration Am hasiba allatheena ijtarahooassayyi-ati an najAAalahum kallatheenaamanoo waAAamiloo assalihati sawaanmahyahum wamamatuhum saa ma yahkumoon Sahih International Or do those who commit evils think We will make them like those who have believed and done righteous deeds - [make them] equal in their life and their death? Evil is that which they judge. Muhsin Khan Or do those who earn evil deeds think that We shall hold them equal with those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, in their present life and after their death? Worst is the judgement that they make. Yusuf Ali What! Do those who seek after evil ways think that We shall hold them equal with those who believe and do righteous deeds,- that equal will be their life and their death? Ill is the judgment that they make. Dr. Ghali Or even do the ones who keep indulging in odious deeds reckon that We will make them as the ones who have believed and done deeds of righteousness, (and) equal (will be) their living and their dying? How odious is (the way) they judge! Tafsir al-Jalalayn Or (am has the significance of the [rhetorical] hamza of denial) do those who have perpetrated evil acts, [such as] disbelief and disobedience, suppose that We shall treat them as those who believe and perform righteous deeds, equally (saw?’an is the predicate) in their life and in their death? (mahy?hum wa-mam?tuhum, [this clause] constitutes the subject and a supplement; the sentence [itself] is a substitution for the k?f [of ka’lladh?na, ‘as those’], and both [suffixed] pronouns [-hum] refer to the disbelievers). The meaning is: do they suppose that in the Hereafter We will assign them [a] good [fate] like believers, [that they will enjoy] a life of plenty, one equal to their life in this world, as when they said to the believers: ‘Surely if we were to be resurrected, we will be given the same good things that you will be given!’ God, exalted be He, says, in accordance with His denial [implicit] in the [rhetorical interrogative] hamza: How evil is that judgement which they make! In other words, it will not be so, for in the Hereafter they will be [suffering] in the chastisement, in contrast to their lives in this world; the believers, on the other hand, will be [delighting] in the Reward in the Hereafter because of their righteous deeds in this world, such as [their observance of] prayers, [their] alms-giving, fasting and otherwise (the m?, ‘that … which’, relates to the verbal action, that is to say, ba’isa hukman hukmuhum h?dh?, ‘awful as a judgement is this judgement of theirs’). | | 45:22 | Transliteration Wakhalaqa Allahu assamawatiwal-arda bilhaqqi walitujzakullu nafsin bima kasabat wahum la yuthlamoon Sahih International And Allah created the heavens and earth in truth and so that every soul may be recompensed for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged. Muhsin Khan And Allah has created the heavens and the earth with truth, in order that each person may be recompensed what he has earned, and they will not be wronged. Yusuf Ali Allah created the heavens and the earth for just ends, and in order that each soul may find the recompense of what it has earned, and none of them be wronged. Dr. Ghali And Allah created the heavens and the earth with the Truth, and that every self may be recompensed for whatever it has earned; and they will not be done any injustice. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And God created the heavens and, He created, the earth with the truth (bi’l-haqqi is semantically connected to khalaqa, ‘He created’), so that He may indicate His power and His Oneness, and so that every soul may be requited for what it has earned, in the way of acts of disobedience or obedience, and therefore the disbeliever cannot be equal to the believer, and they will not be wronged. | | 45:23 | Transliteration Afaraayta mani ittakhatha ilahahuhawahu waadallahu Allahu AAalaAAilmin wakhatama AAala samAAihi waqalbihi wajaAAala AAalabasarihi ghishawatan faman yahdeehi min baAAdi Allahiafala tathakkaroon Sahih International Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah ? Then will you not be reminded? Muhsin Khan Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilah (god), and Allah knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will guide him after Allah? Will you not then remember? Yusuf Ali Then seest thou such a one as takes as his god his own vain desire? Allah has, knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart (and understanding), and put a cover on his sight. Who, then, will guide him after Allah (has withdrawn Guidance)? Will ye not then receive admonition? Dr. Ghali So have you seen him who has taken to him his prejudice to be his god, and Allah has led him into error in spite of a knowledge, (i.e., although he had (some) knowledge) and has sealed his hearing and his heart, and made an envelopment on his beholding? (i.e., eyesight) Who will then guide him ever after Allah? Will you then not be mindful? Tafsir al-Jalalayn Have you then seen, inform Me [about], him who has taken as his god his [own] desire, [that is] whatever [new] stone he may desire after [having desired] some other stone, considering this [new one] to be better, and whom God has led astray knowingly, on His part, exalted be He, that is to say, knowing him to be of those who follow misguidance before he was created, and set a seal upon his hearing and his heart, so that he cannot hear guidance or understand it, and laid a covering, a darkness, over his sight?, so that he cannot perceive guidance (here one should understand as implied the second direct object of [the verb] a-ra’ayta, ‘have you seen’, namely: a-yahtad?, ‘can he find guidance?). So who will guide him after God?, that is to say, after His leading him astray? In other words, he will not find guidance. Will you not then remember?, [will you not then] be admonished? (tadhakkar?na: one of the two t?’ letters [of the original form tatadhakkar?na] has been assimilated with the dh?l). | | 45:24 | Transliteration Waqaloo ma hiya illa hayatunaaddunya namootu wanahya wamayuhlikuna illa addahru wama lahum bithalikamin AAilmin in hum illa yathunnoon Sahih International And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming. Muhsin Khan And they say: "There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys us except Ad-Dahr (the time). And they have no knowledge of it, they only conjecture. Yusuf Ali And they say: "What is there but our life in this world? We shall die and we live, and nothing but time can destroy us." But of that they have no knowledge: they merely conjecture: Dr. Ghali And they have said, "In no way is there anything except our present life; (Literally: lowly life, i.e., the life of this world) we die and we live, and in no way is there anything that causes us to perish except Time." And in no way do they have any knowledge about that; decidedly they do nothing except surmise. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And they, those who deny the Resurrection, say, ‘There is only, that is to say, [the only] life [is], our life, the one that is, in this world. We die and we live, that is to say, some die, while others are given life by [virtue of] being born, and nothing but time, that is, [nothing but] the passage of time, destroys us’. God, exalted be He, says: Of that, saying, they have no knowledge; they are only making conjectures. | | 45:25 | Transliteration Wa-itha tutla AAalayhim ayatunabayyinatin ma kana hujjatahum illaan qaloo i/too bi-aba-ina in kuntum sadiqeen Sahih International And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, their argument is only that they say, "Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful." Muhsin Khan And when Our Clear Verses are recited to them, their argument is no other than that they say: "Bring back our (dead) fathers, if you are truthful!" Yusuf Ali And when Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them their argument is nothing but this: They say, "Bring (back) our forefathers, if what ye say is true!" Dr. Ghali And when Our ayat (Verses, signs) are recited to them, supremely evident (signs), in no way do they have any argument excepting that they say, "Come up with (i.e., bring) our fathers, in case you are sincere." Tafsir al-Jalalayn And when Our signs, of the Qur’?n, indicating Our power to resurrect, are recited to them, being clear signs, evident [signs] (bayyin?tin, ‘clear signs’, is a circumstantial qualifier), their only argument is to say, ‘Bring us our fathers, alive, if you are being truthful’, [when you say] that we will be resurrected. | | 45:26 | Transliteration Quli Allahu yuhyeekum thummayumeetukum thumma yajmaAAukum ila yawmi alqiyamatila rayba feehi walakinna akthara annasila yaAAlamoon Sahih International Say, " Allah causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, but most of the people do not know." Muhsin Khan Say (to them): "Allah gives you life, then causes you to die, then He will assemble you on the Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt. But most of mankind know not." Yusuf Ali Say: "It is Allah Who gives you life, then gives you death; then He will gather you together for the Day of Judgment about which there is no doubt": But most men do not understand. Dr. Ghali Say, " Allah gives you life; thereafter He makes you to die; thereafter He will gather you to the Day of the Resurrection; there is no suspicion about it, but most of mankind do not know." Tafsir al-Jalalayn Say: ‘God [is the One Who] gives you life, when you are sperm-drops, then makes you die, then gathers you, alive, to the Day of Resurrection, in which there is no doubt; but most people, and these are the one who say the above-mentioned, do not know’. | | 45:27 | Transliteration Walillahi mulku assamawatiwal-ardi wayawma taqoomu assaAAatuyawma-ithin yakhsaru almubtiloon Sahih International And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And the Day the Hour appears - that Day the falsifiers will lose. Muhsin Khan And to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And on the Day that the Hour will be established, on that Day the followers of falsehood (polytheists, disbelievers, worshippers of false deities, etc.) shall lose (everything). Yusuf Ali To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and the Day that the Hour of Judgment is established,- that Day will the dealers in Falsehood perish! Dr. Ghali And to Allah belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth; and upon the Day when the Hour comes up, upon that Day the wrong-doers (Literally: the doers of deeds that are void) lose. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And to God belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And on the day when the Hour sets in (yawma taq?mu’l-s?‘atu is substituted by [the following, yawma’idhin]) on that day the followers of falsehood, the disbelievers, will be losers, that is to say, their loss will become manifest by their ending up in the Fire. | | 45:28 | Transliteration Watara kulla ommatin jathiyatankullu ommatin tudAAa ila kitabihaalyawma tujzawna ma kuntum taAAmaloon Sahih International And you will see every nation kneeling [from fear]. Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do. Muhsin Khan And you will see each nation humbled to their knees (kneeling), each nation will be called to its Record (of deeds). This Day you shall be recompensed for what you used to do. Yusuf Ali And thou wilt see every sect bowing the knee: Every sect will be called to its Record: "This Day shall ye be recompensed for all that ye did! Dr. Ghali And you will see every nation kneeling. Every nation will be called to its Book. (It will be said), "Today you will be recompensed for whatever you were doing. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And you will see every community, that is, [all] members of a religion, crouching, on their knees — or [j?thiya means] ‘gathered together’. Every community will be summoned to its record, the record of its deeds and it will be said to them: ‘Today you will be requited for what you used to do, that is, [you will be given] the desert thereof. | | 45:29 | Transliteration Hatha kitabuna yantiquAAalaykum bilhaqqi inna kunnanastansikhu ma kuntum taAAmaloon Sahih International This, Our record, speaks about you in truth. Indeed, We were having transcribed whatever you used to do." Muhsin Khan This Our Record speaks about you with truth. Verily, We were recording what you used to do (i.e. Our angels used to record your deeds). Yusuf Ali "This Our Record speaks about you with truth: For We were wont to put on Record all that ye did." Dr. Ghali This, Our Book, pronounces against you with the Truth; surely We have been transcribing whatever you were doing." Tafsir al-Jalalayn This is Our book, the register of [deeds recorded by] the guardian angels, which pronounces against you with truth. Indeed We used to write down, record and preserve, what you used to do’. | | 45:30 | Transliteration Faamma allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati fayudkhiluhumrabbuhum fee rahmatihi thalika huwa alfawzualmubeen Sahih International So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is what is the clear attainment. Muhsin Khan Then, as for those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and did righteous good deeds, their Lord will admit them to His Mercy. That will be the evident success. Yusuf Ali Then, as to those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them to His Mercy that will be the achievement for all to see. Dr. Ghali So as for the ones who have believed and done deeds of righteousness, then their Lord will cause them to enter into His mercy; it is that which is the evident triumph. Tafsir al-Jalalayn So as for those who believed and performed righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy, His Paradise. That is the manifest triumph, the clear and evident [triumph]. | | 45:31 | Transliteration Waamma allatheena kafarooafalam takun ayatee tutla AAalaykum fastakbartumwakuntum qawman mujrimeen Sahih International But as for those who disbelieved, [it will be said], "Were not Our verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and became a people of criminals? Muhsin Khan But as for those who disbelieved (it will be said to them): "Were not Our Verses recited to you? But you were proud, and you were a people who were Mujrimun (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, criminals)." Yusuf Ali But as to those who rejected Allah, (to them will be said): "Were not Our Signs rehearsed to you? But ye were arrogant, and were a people given to sin! Dr. Ghali And as for the ones who have disbelieved, (it will be said), "So, were not My ayat being recited to you, yet you waxed proud, and you were a criminal people? Tafsir al-Jalalayn But as for those who disbelieved, it will be said to them: ‘Were not My signs, [was not] the Qur’?n, recited to you, but you were disdainful, you were arrogant, and were a guilty, a disbelieving, lot? | | 45:32 | Transliteration Wa-itha qeela inna waAAda Allahihaqqun wassaAAatu la rayba feehaqultum ma nadree ma assaAAatu in nathunnuilla thannan wama nahnubimustayqineen Sahih International And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] - no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.' " Muhsin Khan And when it was said: "Verily! Allah's Promise is the truth, and there is no doubt about the coming of the Hour," you said; "We know not what is the Hour, we do not think it but as a conjecture, and we have no firm convincing belief (therein)." Yusuf Ali "And when it was said that the promise of Allah was true, and that the Hour- there was no doubt about its (coming), ye used to say, 'We know not what is the hour: we only think it is an idea, and we have no firm assurance.'" Dr. Ghali And when it was said, ‘Surely the promise of Allah is true, and the Hour, there is no suspicion about it you said, ‘In no way do we realize what the Hour is; decidedly we surmise about it (just) a surmise; and in no way have we reached certitude.' " Tafsir al-Jalalayn And when it was said, to you, O disbelievers: “God’s promise, of resurrection, is indeed true, and there is no doubt about the Hour”, (read al-s?‘atu or al-s?‘ata) you said, “We do not know what the Hour is. We only make conjectures (al-Mubarrad said that this actually [means] in nahnu ill? nazunnu zannan) and we are by no means certain” ’, that it will come to pass. | | 45:33 | Transliteration Wabada lahum sayyi-atu maAAamiloo wahaqa bihim ma kanoo bihiyastahzi-oon Sahih International And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule. Muhsin Khan And the evil of what they did will appear to them, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at! Yusuf Ali Then will appear to them the evil (fruits) of what they did, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at! Dr. Ghali And the odious deeds that they have done will appear to them, and that which they used to mock will redound on them. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And there will appear before them, in the Hereafter, the evils of what they did, in this world, that is to say, the requital thereof, and they will be besieged by, there shall befall [them], what they used to deride, namely, the chastisement [of the Hereafter]. | | 45:34 | Transliteration Waqeela alyawma nansakum kamanaseetum liqaa yawmikum hatha wama/wakumu annaruwama lakum min nasireen Sahih International And it will be said, "Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers. Muhsin Khan And it will be said: "This Day We will forget you as you forgot the Meeting of this Day of yours. And your abode is the Fire, and there is none to help you." Yusuf Ali It will also be said: "This Day We will forget you as ye forgot the meeting of this Day of yours! and your abode is the Fire, and no helpers have ye! Dr. Ghali And it will be said, "Today We (do) forget you, (even) as you forgot the meeting of this your Day; and your abode is the Fire, and in no way will you have any vindicators. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And it will be said: ‘Today We will forget you, We will abandon you in the Fire, just as you forgot the encounter of this day of yours, that is to say, [just as] you neglected to perform [those good] deeds [in preparation] for the encounter with it, and your abode will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers, [any] protectors therefrom. | | 45:35 | Transliteration Thalikum bi-annakumu ittakhathtumayati Allahi huzuwan wagharratkumu alhayatuaddunya falyawma la yukhrajoonaminha wala hum yustaAAtaboon Sahih International That is because you took the verses of Allah in ridicule, and worldly life deluded you." So that Day they will not be removed from it, nor will they be asked to appease [ Allah ]. Muhsin Khan This, because you took the revelations of Allah (this Quran) in mockery, and the life of the world deceived you. So this Day, they shall not be taken out from there (Hell), nor shall they be Yusta'tabun (i.e. they shall not return to the worldly life, so that they repent to Allah, and beg His Pardon for their sins). Yusuf Ali "This, because ye used to take the Signs of Allah in jest, and the life of the world deceived you:" (From) that Day, therefore, they shall not be taken out thence, nor shall they be received into Grace. Dr. Ghali That (Literally: Those (conseguences) is for that you took to yourselves the signs of Allah in mockery, and the present life (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this world) deluded you." So today they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be allowed to make amends. Tafsir al-Jalalayn That is because you took God’s signs, the Qur’?n, in mockery, and the life of this world deceived you’, to the extent that you said, ‘There is neither Resurrection nor Reckoning’. So today they will not be brought out (read either active yakhruj?na, ‘they will [not] come out’, or passive yukhraj?na, ‘they will [not] be brought out’) of it, of the Fire, nor will they asked to make amends: they will not be asked to [try to] attain the pleasure of their Lord by repenting or being obedient, for such [action] will be of no use then. | | 45:36 | Transliteration Falillahi alhamdu rabbi assamawatiwarabbi al-ardi rabbi alAAalameen Sahih International Then, to Allah belongs [all] praise - Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the worlds. Muhsin Khan So all the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). Yusuf Ali Then Praise be to Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth,- Lord and Cherisher of all the Worlds! Dr. Ghali So praise be to Allah, The Lord of the heavens and The Lord of the earth, The Lord of the worlds. Tafsir al-Jalalayn So to God belongs [all] praise, the attribution to Him of what is beautiful [in words] for fulfilling His promise regarding the deniers; Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, the Lord of the Worlds, the Creator of all that has been mentioned (‘?lam, ‘world’, denotes everything other than God; it is in the plural [‘?lam?n] because of the different types [of beings] in them; rabbi, ‘Lord’, [in the last clause] is a substitution [for the previous ones]). | | 45:37 | Transliteration Walahu alkibriyao fee assamawatiwal-ardi wahuwa alAAazeezu alhakeem Sahih International And to Him belongs [all] grandeur within the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. Muhsin Khan And His (Alone) is the Majesty in the heavens and the earth, and He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. Yusuf Ali To Him be glory throughout the heavens and the earth: and He is Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom! Dr. Ghali And to Him (belongs) the Supreme Grandeur in the heavens and the earth; and He is The Ever-Mighty, The Ever-Wise. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And to Him belongs [all] grandeur, [all] majesty, in the heavens and the earth (f?’l-sam?w?ti wa’l-ardi is a circumstantial qualifier), and He is the Mighty, the Wise — as [explained in a similar statement] above. |
