Transliteration
Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAat
Sahih International
When the Occurrence occurs,

When the Event (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) befalls.

When the Event inevitable cometh to pass,

When the Event (Literally: the Befalling) befalls,

When the [imminent] Event comes to pass, [when] the Resurrection takes place,

Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathiba

There is, at its occurrence, no denial.

And there can be no denying of its befalling.

Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.

There is no lying about its befalling;

there will be no denying its coming to pass, [there is] no soul to deny [it], by repudiating it as it did in this world,

It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].

[it will be] abasing [some], exalting [others], that is, it will manifest the abasing of some people by [virtue of] their admission into the Fire, and [manifest] the exalting of others by their admission into Paradise.

When the earth is shaken with convulsion

When the earth will be shaken with a terrible shake.

When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,

When the earth is shaken with a violent shock,

And the mountains are broken down, crumbling

And the mountains will be powdered to dust.

And become dust dispersing.

And you become [of] three kinds:

Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?

So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands), Who will be those on the Right Hand? (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise).

Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand?
Dr. Ghali
So (as for) the companions of the Rightness, (Or: the Right Hand) what (will become) of the companions of the Rightness?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Those of the right [hand], those who are given their record [of deeds] in their right hand (fa-ash?bu’l-maymanati is the subject, the predicate of which is [the following m? ash?bu’l-maymanati]) — what of those of the right [hand]? — a glorification of their status on account of their admittance into Paradise.

Waas-habu almash-amati maas-habu almash-amat

And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?

And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands), Who will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell).

And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

And the companions of the Sinister (befalling), what (will become) of the companions of the Sinister (befalling)? (Or: the Left Hand)

And those of the left [hand] (al-mash’ama means al-shim?l, ‘left’), each of whom is given his record [of deeds] in their left hands — what of those of the left [hand]? — an expression of contempt for their status on account of their admittance into the Fire.

Wassabiqoona assabiqoon

And the forerunners, the forerunners -

And those foremost [(in Islamic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islam,] will be foremost (in Paradise).

And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).

And the Outstrippers, (i.e., those who precede others) the Outstrippers-

And the foremost, in [the race to do] good, namely, the prophets (al-s?biq?na is a subject) the foremost: (this [repetition] is to emphasise their exalted status; the predicate [is the following, ?l?’ika’l-muqarrab?na])

Those are the ones brought near [to Allah ]

These will be those nearest to Allah.

There will circulate among them young boys made eternal

With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -

La yusaddaAAoona AAanhawala yunzifoon

No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -

Wherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.

No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:

Wherefrom their (heads) will not ache, nor will they feel exhausted,

The likenesses of pearls well-protected,

As reward for what they used to do.

a reward (jaz?’an is an object denoting reason or a verbal noun, with the operator being an implicit [verb], in other words, ‘We have appointed for them the mentioned as a reward’ or ‘We have rewarded them [this]’) for what they used to do.

La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwanwala ta/theema

They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -

No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech (like backbiting, etc.).

Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,-

Therein they will not hear any idle talk, nor any cause for vice,

They will not hear therein, in Paradise, any vain talk, any lewd words, or any sinful words,

Only a saying: "Peace, peace."

Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury,

For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury),

Surely they were before that (living) in ease and luxury.

Indeed before that, in the world, they used to live at ease, enjoying [life’s] comforts, never wearying themselves with [an act of] obedience,

And they used to persist in the great violation,

And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.)

And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!

And they used to persist in the monstrous vileness;

and they used to persist in the great sin, namely, idolatry.

And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?

And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?-
Dr. Ghali
And they used to say, "When we die and are dust and bones, will we surely be made to rise again?

And they used to say, ‘What! When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we indeed be resurrected? (in both instances [a-idh? and a-inn?] the two hamzas may be read either by pronouncing them fully, or by not pronouncing the second, and in either case inserting an intervening alif).

Awa abaona al-awwaloon

And our forefathers [as well]?"

Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples

Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times.

Say, (This is addressed to the Prophet) "Surely the earliest people and the later.

Say: ‘Truly the former and the later [generations]

Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."

Will indeed be gathered to the fixed time of a known Day.

will be gathered for the tryst, the time, of a known day, that is, the Day of Resurrection.

Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,
