Saala sa-ilun biAAathabin waqiAA
Sahih International
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen

A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall
Yusuf Ali
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall-
Dr. Ghali
A questioner asked of a befalling torment.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
A petitioner petitioned, a supplicator supplicated [for], an impending chastisement
70:2

Transliteration
Lilkafireena laysa lahu dafiAA
Sahih International
To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.
Muhsin Khan
Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert,
Yusuf Ali
The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,-
Dr. Ghali
For the disbelievers, for which there is no repelling,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
— which in the case of the disbelievers none can avert: this was al-Nadr b. al-H?rith who said, ‘O God, if this be indeed the truth from You … [then rain down upon us stones from the heaven’ [Q. 8:32],

Mina Allahi thee almaAAarij

[It is] from Allah , owner of the ways of ascent.

From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent.
Yusuf Ali
(A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent.
Dr. Ghali
From Allah, The Owner of the Stairways.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
from God (mina’Ll?hi is semantically connected to w?qi‘in, ‘impending’), Lord of the Ascensions, the ascension routes of the angels, which are the heavens.
70:4
70:4
Transliteration
TaAAruju almala-ikatu warroohuilayhi fee yawmin kana miqdaruhu khamseena alfasana
Sahih International
The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.
Muhsin Khan
The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years,
Yusuf Ali
The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years:
Dr. Ghali
To Him the Angels and the Spirit ascend with difficulty to Him in a Day whereof the determined (length) is fifty thousand years.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
To Him, to the place in the heaven to which His command descends, ascend (read [feminine person] ta‘ruju or [masculine person] ya‘ruju) the angels and the Spirit, Gabriel, in a day (f? yawmin is semantically connected to an omitted clause, that is to say, ‘[in a day] in which the chastisement befalls them’, on the Day of Resurrection) whose span is fifty thousand years, from the perspective of the disbeliever, on account of the calamities he will encounter in it — but as for the believer, it [the mentioned day] will be easier for him than an obligatory prayer which he performs in this world, as stated in had?th.

Fasbir sabran jameela
Sahih International
So be patient with gracious patience.
Muhsin Khan
So be patient (O Muhammad SAW ), with a good patience.
Yusuf Ali
Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment).
Dr. Ghali
So (endure) patiently with a becoming patience;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So be patient — this was [revealed] before he [the Prophet] was commanded to fight — with a graceful patience, that is, one in which there is no anguish.
70:6

Transliteration
Innahum yarawnahu baAAeeda
Sahih International
Indeed, they see it [as] distant,
Muhsin Khan
Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off,
Yusuf Ali
They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event):
Dr. Ghali
Surely they see it far off,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Lo! they see it, that is, the chastisement, as [being] far off, as never taking place;
70:7

Wanarahu qareeba
Sahih International
But We see it [as] near.
Muhsin Khan
But We see it (quite) near.
Yusuf Ali
But We see it (quite) near.
Dr. Ghali
And We see it near.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
while We see it [to be] near, taking place without a doubt.
70:8

Transliteration
Yawma takoonu assamao kalmuhl
Sahih International
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,
Muhsin Khan
The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.).
Yusuf Ali
The Day that the sky will be like molten brass,
Dr. Ghali
On the Day when the heaven will be as molten metal,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
The day when the heaven will be (yawma tak?nu’l-sam?’u is semantically connected to an omitted clause, implicitly taken to be yaqa‘u, ‘it will take place’) as molten silver,
70:9

Transliteration
Watakoonu aljibalu kalAAihn
Sahih International
And the mountains will be like wool,
Muhsin Khan
And the mountains will be like flakes of wool,
Yusuf Ali
And the mountains will be like wool,
Dr. Ghali
And the mountains will be as wool-tufts,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and the mountains will be as flakes of wool, in terms of [their] lightness and [their] floating about in the wind.
70:10
70:10
Transliteration
Wala yas-alu hameemun hameema
Sahih International
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
Muhsin Khan
And no friend will ask of a friend,
Yusuf Ali
And no friend will ask after a friend,
Dr. Ghali
And no intimate (friend) will ask (another) intimate friend,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And no friend will inquire about his friend, [no] relative [will inquire] about his relative, each being preoccupied with his own predicament.
70:11
70:11
Transliteration
Yubassaroonahum yawaddu almujrimu lawyaftadee min AAathabi yawmi-ithin bibaneeh
Sahih International
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children
Muhsin Khan
Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children.
Yusuf Ali
Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children,
Dr. Ghali
(As) they are made to behold them (i.e., each other). The criminal would like that he might ransom himself of the torment upon that Day (even) by his seeds,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They will [however] be made to see them, that is, friends will catch sight of one another, recognising one another but refraining from speaking [to one another] (the sentence [yubassar?nahum] is a new [independent] one). The guilty one will desire, the disbeliever will yearn, to ransom himself from the chastisement of that day (read [min ‘adh?bi] yawmi’dhin or [min ‘adh?bin] yawma’idhin) at the price of his children,

Wasahibatihi waakheeh

And his wife and his brother

And his wife and his brother,

And his female companion and his brother,

Wafaseelatihi allatee tu/weeh

And his nearest kindred who shelter him

And his kindred who sheltered him,

His kindred who sheltered him,

And the nearest of his kin who gave him abode,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and his kin, his clan ([expressed as fas?la] because he is a [detached] part [fasl] of it) that had sheltered him, embraced him,

Transliteration
Waman fee al-ardi jameeAAan thummayunjeeh
Sahih International
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.

And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him.
Yusuf Ali
And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him:
Dr. Ghali
And whoever is in the earth all together, so that thereafter it might deliver him.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and all who are on earth, if it, that ransom, might then deliver him (thumma yunj?hi is a supplement to yaftad?, ‘to ransom himself’).
70:15

Transliteration
Kalla innaha latha
Sahih International
No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],
Muhsin Khan
By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell!
Yusuf Ali
By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!-
Dr. Ghali
Not at all! Surely it is a fierce Blaze,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay! — a refutation of his wish. Lo! [for him] it, namely, the Fire, will be the Churning Fire (laz?) — a name for Hell, [so called] because it churns its flames [tatalazz?] against the disbelievers,

NazzaAAatan lishshawa
Sahih International
A remover of exteriors.
Muhsin Khan
Taking away (burning completely) the head skin!
Yusuf Ali
Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!-
Dr. Ghali
Constantly plucking forth the scalps,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
ripping out the scalp (shaw? is the plural of shaw?t, the skin of the head);

Transliteration
TadAAoo man adbara watawalla
Sahih International
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]
Muhsin Khan
Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289]
Yusuf Ali
Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right).
Dr. Ghali
Calling him who withdrew and turned away,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
it will call him who turned his back and ignored, faith, saying [to him]: ‘To me! to me [come hither]!’,
70:18
70:18
Transliteration
WajamaAAa faawAAa
Sahih International
And collected [wealth] and hoarded.
Muhsin Khan
And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah).
Yusuf Ali
And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)!
Dr. Ghali
And (who) gathered (riches); (so he) prudently kept them.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and amassed, wealth, then hoarded, keeping it in containers and refraining from paying from it what is God’s due.
70:19
70:19
Transliteration
Inna al-insana khuliqa halooAAa
Sahih International
Indeed, mankind was created anxious:
Muhsin Khan
Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient;
Yusuf Ali
Truly man was created very impatient;-
Dr. Ghali
Surely man was created most fretful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed man was created restless: (hal?‘an is an implied circumstantial qualifier, the explanation of which [follows]):
70:20
70:20
Transliteration
Itha massahu ashsharrujazooAAa
Sahih International
When evil touches him, impatient,
Muhsin Khan
Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him;
Yusuf Ali
Fretful when evil touches him;
Dr. Ghali
When evil touches him, (he is) most impatient,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
when evil befalls him, [he is] anxious, at the point of that evil befalling [him],
70:21

Transliteration
Wa-itha massahu alkhayru manooAAa
Sahih International
And when good touches him, withholding [of it],
Muhsin Khan
And niggardly when good touches him;
Yusuf Ali
And niggardly when good reaches him;-
Dr. Ghali
And when charity touches him, (he is) a constant preventer of it,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and when good befalls him, [he is] grudging, at the point of that good befalling [him], that is to say, [when] wealth [befalls him], [he is grudging to give] of it what is due to God;
70:22

Illa almusalleen
Sahih International
Except the observers of prayer -

Except those devoted to Salat (prayers)
Yusuf Ali
Not so those devoted to Prayer;-
Dr. Ghali
Except the ones who are (constantly) praying.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except those who perform prayers, that is, the believers,
70:23
70:23
Transliteration
Allatheena hum AAala salatihimda-imoon
Sahih International
Those who are constant in their prayer
Muhsin Khan
Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers);
Yusuf Ali
Those who remain steadfast to their prayer;
Dr. Ghali
They are the ones who are permanently preserving their prayers;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those who maintain, [those who] regularly observe, their prayers,
70:24
70:24
Transliteration
Wallatheena fee amwalihimhaqqun maAAloom
Sahih International
And those within whose wealth is a known right
Muhsin Khan
And those in whose wealth there is a known right,
Yusuf Ali
And those in whose wealth is a recognised right.
Dr. Ghali
And (they) are the ones in whose riches is a truthful (duty) known.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and in whose wealth there is an acknowledged due, namely, alms,

Transliteration
Lissa-ili walmahroom
Sahih International
For the petitioner and the deprived -
Muhsin Khan
For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened);
Yusuf Ali
For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking);
Dr. Ghali
For the beggar and the dispossessed.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
for the beggar and the deprived, the [latter being the] one who refrains from begging and thus becomes deprived,

Transliteration
Wallatheena yusaddiqoonabiyawmi addeen
Sahih International
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
Muhsin Khan
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense,
Yusuf Ali
And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment;
Dr. Ghali
And the ones who sincerely (believe) in the Day of Doom,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and who affirm the truth of the Day of Judgement, [of] Requital,

Transliteration
Wallatheena hum min AAathabirabbihim mushfiqoon
Sahih International
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -
Muhsin Khan
And those who fear the torment of their Lord,
Yusuf Ali
And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,-
Dr. Ghali
And they are the ones who are timorous of the torment of their Lord.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and who are apprehensive of the chastisement of their Lord —
70:28
70:28
Transliteration
Inna AAathaba rabbihim ghayru ma/moon
Sahih International
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -
Muhsin Khan
Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure,
Yusuf Ali
For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;-
Dr. Ghali
Surely the torment of their Lord (leaves) none secure (Literally: other than to be secure).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
lo! there is no security from the chastisement of their Lord, [from] its being sent down —
70:29
70:29
Transliteration
Wallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoon
Sahih International
And those who guard their private parts
Muhsin Khan
And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts).
Yusuf Ali
And those who guard their chastity,
Dr. Ghali
And they are the ones who preserve their private parts,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and those who guard their private parts,
70:30
70:30
Transliteration
Illa AAala azwajihim awma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeen
Sahih International
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -
Muhsin Khan
Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed,
Yusuf Ali
Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,
Dr. Ghali
Except with their spouses or what their right hands possess; then surely they are not blameworthy (Literally: other than being blameworthy).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except from their wives and those whom their right hands own, in the way of slavegirls, for in that case they are not blameworthy;
70:31
70:31
Transliteration
Famani ibtagha waraa thalikafaola-ika humu alAAadoon
Sahih International
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -
Muhsin Khan
But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers.
Yusuf Ali
But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;-
Dr. Ghali
Yet, whoever inequitably seeks (anything) beyond that, then those are the ones who are the aggressors-
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
but whoever seeks beyond that, those are the infringers, who transgress [the bounds of] what is lawful [stepping] into what is unlawful;
70:32

Transliteration
Wallatheena hum li-amanatihimwaAAahdihim raAAoon
Sahih International
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive
Muhsin Khan
And those who keep their trusts and covenants;
Yusuf Ali
And those who respect their trusts and covenants;
Dr. Ghali
And they (The thought continues from verse 29) are the ones who pay heed (i.e., rightly observe) to their deposits and their covenant,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and those who are keepers, [faithful] guardians, of their trusts (am?n?tihim: a variant reading has the singular [am?natihim]), that to which they are entrusted of religion and the affairs of this world, and their covenant, the one taken from them regarding such things,
70:33

Transliteration
Wallatheena hum bishahadatihimqa-imoon
Sahih International
And those who are in their testimonies upright
Muhsin Khan
And those who stand firm in their testimonies;
Yusuf Ali
And those who stand firm in their testimonies;
Dr. Ghali
And they are the ones who keep up their testimonies,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and who are forthwith with their testimony (bi-shah?datihim: a variant reading has the plural [bi-shah?d?tihim, ‘their testimonies’]), [those who] offer them and do not withhold them,
70:34
70:34
Transliteration
Wallatheena hum AAala salatihimyuhafithoon
Sahih International
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
Muhsin Khan
And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well.
Yusuf Ali
And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;-
Dr. Ghali
And they are the ones who (strictly) preserve their prayer.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and who preserve their prayers, by observing them in their appointed times.
70:35
70:35
Transliteration
Ola-ika fee jannatin mukramoon
Sahih International
They will be in gardens, honored.
Muhsin Khan
Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured.
Yusuf Ali
Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss).
Dr. Ghali
Those will be in Gardens, high-honored.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Those will be in Gardens, honoured.
70:36

Transliteration
Famali allatheena kafarooqibalaka muhtiAAeen
Sahih International
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad],
Muhsin Khan
So what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten to listen from you (O Muhammad SAW), in order to belie you and to mock at you, and at Allah's Book (this Quran).
Yusuf Ali
Now what is the matter with the Unbelievers that they rush madly before thee-
Dr. Ghali
So, for what (reason) are the ones who have disbelieved (hurrying with heads) protruding, facing you,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So what is wrong with those who disbelieve that they keep staring towards you (muhti‘?na is a circumstantial qualifier),

Transliteration
AAani alyameeni waAAani ashshimaliAAizeen
Sahih International
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?
Muhsin Khan
(Sitting) in groups on the right and on the left (of you, O Muhammad SAW)?
Yusuf Ali
From the right and from the left, in crowds?
Dr. Ghali
On the right and on the left in sundry batches?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
to the right and to the left, of you, in droves? (‘iz?na is also a circumstantial qualifier), in other words, in groups standing in circles, one next to the other, saying, in mockery of the believers, ‘Verily if [the likes of] these are to enter Paradise, we shall enter it before them’. God, exalted be He, says:

Transliteration
AyatmaAAu kullu imri-in minhum anyudkhala jannata naAAeem
Sahih International
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
Muhsin Khan
Does every man of them hope to enter the Paradise of delight?
Yusuf Ali
Does every man of them long to enter the Garden of Bliss?
Dr. Ghali
Does every person of them long to be made to enter a Garden of Bliss?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Does each one of them hope to be admitted into a Garden of Bliss?
70:39
70:39
Transliteration
Kalla inna khalaqnahummimma yaAAlamoon
Sahih International
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.
Muhsin Khan
No, that is not like that! Verily, We have created them out of that which they know!
Yusuf Ali
By no means! For We have created them out of the (base matter) they know!
Dr. Ghali
Not at all! Surely We created them of what they know.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay! — meant to thwart their hopes of [entering] Paradise. Indeed We created them, as others, from what they know, from drops of sperm, and so one cannot hope for Paradise [merely] on account of this: one hopes for it by being God-fearing.
70:40
70:40
Transliteration
Fala oqsimu birabbi almashariqiwalmagharibi inna laqadiroon
Sahih International
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able
Muhsin Khan
So I swear by the Lord of all [the three hundred and sixty (360)] points of sunrise and sunset in the east and the west that surely We are Able
Yusuf Ali
Now I do call to witness the Lord of all points in the East and the West that We can certainly-
Dr. Ghali
Yet no, I swear by The Lord of the easts and the wests; surely We are indeed (the) Determiners.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
For verily (fa-l?: l? is extra) I swear by the Lord of the rising-places and the setting-places, of the sun, the moon and all the stars, that We are able
70:41
70:41
Transliteration
AAala an nubaddila khayran minhum wamanahnu bimasbooqeen
Sahih International
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.
Muhsin Khan
To replace them by (others) better than them; and We are not to be outrun.
Yusuf Ali
Substitute for them better (men) than they; And We are not to be defeated (in Our Plan).
Dr. Ghali
To exchange a more charitable (i.e., better) (people) instead of them, and in no way will We ever be outstripped.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
to replace [them], to bring in their place, with [others] better than them, and We are not to be outmanoeuvred, [We will not be] frustrated in this.
70:42
70:42
Transliteration
Fatharhum yakhoodoowayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allatheeyooAAadoon
Sahih International
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -

So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they meet their Day which they are promised.
Yusuf Ali
So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!-
Dr. Ghali
So leave them out to wade (Or: be engrossed "in vain talk") and play until they meet the Day of theirs which they are promised.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So leave them to indulge, in their falsehoods, and to play, in this world of theirs, until they encounter that day of theirs, in, which they are promised, chastisement;
70:43

Transliteration
Yawma yakhrujoona mina al-ajdathi siraAAankaannahum ila nusubin yoofidoon
Sahih International
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.
Muhsin Khan
The Day when they will come out of the graves quickly as racing to a goal,
Yusuf Ali
The Day whereon they will issue from their sepulchres in sudden haste as if they were rushing to a goal-post (fixed for them),-
Dr. Ghali
The Day they will go out of the graves swiftly, as if they were rushing to a standard,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
the day when they will come forth from the graves hastening, to the site of the Gathering, as if racing to a [standing] target (nasbin: a variant reading has nusubin, meaning something that has been erected [mans?b], such as a flag or a banner),
70:44
70:44
Transliteration
KhashiAAatan absaruhumtarhaquhum thillatun thalika alyawmu allatheekanoo yooAAadoon
Sahih International
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
Muhsin Khan
With their eyes lowered in fear and humility, ignominy covering them (all over)! That is the Day which they were promised!
Yusuf Ali
Their eyes lowered in dejection,- ignominy covering them (all over)! such is the Day the which they are promised!
Dr. Ghali
Submissive will be their be holdings (i.e., gazes).They will be oppressed by humbleness. That is the Day which they were promised.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
