| 71:1 | Transliteration Inna arsalna noohan ilaqawmihi an anthir qawmaka min qabli an ya/tiyahum AAathabunaleem Sahih International Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment." Muhsin Khan Verily, We sent Nuh (Noah) to his people (Saying): "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful torment." Yusuf Ali We sent Noah to his People (with the Command): "Do thou warn thy People before there comes to them a grievous Penalty." Dr. Ghali Surely We sent Nuh to his people (saying), "Warn your people even before there comes up to them a painful torment." Tafsir al-Jalalayn Verily We sent Noah to his people [saying]: ‘Warn your people before there come on them — should they not believe — a painful chastisement’, in this world and in the Hereafter. | | 71:2 | Transliteration Qala ya qawmi innee lakum natheerunmubeen Sahih International He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner, Muhsin Khan He said: "O my people! Verily, I am a plain warner to you, Yusuf Ali He said: "O my People! I am to you a Warner, clear and open: Dr. Ghali He said, "O my people, surely I am to you an evident warner, Tafsir al-Jalalayn He said, ‘O my people, I am indeed a plain warner to you, one whose warning is plain, | | 71:3 | Transliteration Ani oAAbudoo Allaha wattaqoohuwaateeAAoon Sahih International [Saying], 'Worship Allah , fear Him and obey me. Muhsin Khan "That you should worship Allah (Alone), be dutiful to Him, and obey me, Yusuf Ali "That ye should worship Allah, fear Him and obey me: Dr. Ghali (Saying) Worship Allah, and be pious to Him, and obey me. Tafsir al-Jalalayn [to tell you] that [you should] worship God and fear Him and obey me, | | 71:4 | Transliteration Yaghfir lakum min thunoobikumwayu-akhkhirkum ila ajalin musamman inna ajala Allahiitha jaa la yu-akhkharu law kuntumtaAAlamoon Sahih International Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allah , when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew.' " Muhsin Khan "He (Allah) will forgive you of your sins and respite you to an appointed term. Verily, the term of Allah when it comes, cannot be delayed, if you but knew." Yusuf Ali "So He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a stated Term: for when the Term given by Allah is accomplished, it cannot be put forward: if ye only knew." Dr. Ghali He will forgive you (some) of your guilty deeds and defer you to a stated term; surely the term of Allah, when it comes, cannot be deferred, if you (only) know." Tafsir al-Jalalayn that He may forgive you some of your sins (min dhun?bikum, ‘some of your sins’: min may be taken as extra, because submission to God (isl?m) expunges everything [of sin that was committed] previous to it; or it [min] may be understood as partitive, to point out that which is due to [those who were already God’s] servants) and defer you, without chastising [you], until an appointed term, the term for death. Indeed when God’s term, for your chastisement — should you not believe — comes, it cannot be deferred, if only you knew’, this, you would believe. | | 71:5 | Transliteration Qala rabbi innee daAAawtu qawmeelaylan wanahara Sahih International He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day. Muhsin Khan He said: "O my Lord! Verily, I have called my people night and day (i.e. secretly and openly to accept the doctrine of Islamic Monotheism). Yusuf Ali He said: "O my Lord! I have called to my People night and day: Dr. Ghali He said, "Lord! Surely I have called my people by night and by daytime, Tafsir al-Jalalayn He said, ‘My Lord, I have summoned my people night and day, that is to say, continuously without interruption, | | 71:6 | Transliteration Falam yazidhum duAAa-ee illafirara Sahih International But my invitation increased them not except in flight. Muhsin Khan "But all my calling added nothing but to (their) flight (from the truth). Yusuf Ali "But my call only increases (their) flight (from the Right). Dr. Ghali Yet my calling increased them (in nothing) except in flight. Tafsir al-Jalalayn but my summon has only increased their evasion, of faith. | | 71:7 | Transliteration Wa-innee kullama daAAawtuhumlitaghfira lahum jaAAaloo asabiAAahum fee athanihimwastaghshaw thiyabahum waasarroo wastakbarooistikbara Sahih International And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance. Muhsin Khan "And verily! Every time I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride. Yusuf Ali "And every time I have called to them, that Thou mightest forgive them, they have (only) thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance. Dr. Ghali And surely whenever I call them that You may forgive them, they set (Literally: made "up") their fingers in their ears, and enveloped themselves with their clothes, and persisted, and waxed proud (with insolent) arrogance (Literally: in "arrogant" pride). Tafsir al-Jalalayn And indeed whenever I summoned them, so that You might forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, in order not to hear what I say, and draw their cloaks over themselves, they cover their heads with them in order not to catch sight of me, and they persist, in their disbelief, and act in great arrogance, disdaining faith. | | 71:8 | Transliteration Thumma innee daAAawtuhum jihara Sahih International Then I invited them publicly. Muhsin Khan "Then verily, I called to them openly (aloud); Yusuf Ali "So I have called to them aloud; Dr. Ghali Thereafter, surely I called them aloud, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Then indeed I summoned them aloud, that is to say, at the top of my voice; | | 71:9 | Transliteration Thumma innee aAAlantu lahum waasrartu lahumisrara Sahih International Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly Muhsin Khan "Then verily, I proclaimed to them in public, and I have appealed to them in private, Yusuf Ali "Further I have spoken to them in public and secretly in private, Dr. Ghali Thereafter, surely I called them publicly, and I secretly (spoke) to them in private (Literally: in secret "conversation"). Tafsir al-Jalalayn then assuredly I proclaimed to them, with my voice, and I confided, my words, to them secretly, | | 71:10 | Transliteration Faqultu istaghfiroo rabbakum innahu kanaghaffara Sahih International And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. Muhsin Khan "I said (to them): 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; Yusuf Ali "Saying, 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; for He is Oft-Forgiving; Dr. Ghali So I have said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord; surely He has been (The) Superb Forgiver; Tafsir al-Jalalayn saying, “Ask your Lord for forgiveness, from idolatry. Assuredly He is ever Forgiving. | | 71:11 | Transliteration Yursili assamaa AAalaykummidrara Sahih International He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers Muhsin Khan 'He will send rain to you in abundance; Yusuf Ali "'He will send rain to you in abundance; Dr. Ghali He will send down on you (rain) from the heaven showering plentifully, Tafsir al-Jalalayn He will release the heaven, the rain — for they had been deprived of it — for you in torrents, in plenteous showers, | | 71:12 | Transliteration Wayumdidkum bi-amwalin wabaneenawayajAAal lakum jannatin wayajAAal lakum anhara Sahih International And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers. Muhsin Khan 'And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers." Yusuf Ali "'Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers (of flowing water). Dr. Ghali And He will supply you with riches and sons, (Or: seeds) and will set up (Literally: make) for you gardens, and will set up for you rivers. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and furnish you with wealth and sons, and assign to you gardens, orchards, and assign to you, running, rivers. | | 71:13 | Transliteration Ma lakum la tarjoona lillahiwaqara Sahih International What is [the matter] with you that you do not attribute to Allah [due] grandeur Muhsin Khan What is the matter with you, [that you fear not Allah (His punishment), and] you hope not for reward (from Allah or you believe not in His Oneness). Yusuf Ali "'What is the matter with you, that ye place not your hope for kindness and long-suffering in Allah,- Dr. Ghali For what (reason) you do not hope to get reward from Allah for having reverence towards Him, Tafsir al-Jalalayn What is wrong with you that you do not hope for dignity from God, that is to say, [that] you [do not] hope that God will dignify you by becoming believers, | | 71:14 | Transliteration Waqad khalaqakum atwara Sahih International While He has created you in stages? Muhsin Khan While He has created you in (different) stages [i.e. first Nutfah, then 'Alaqah and then Mudghah, see (VV.23:13,14) the Quran]. Yusuf Ali "'Seeing that it is He that has created you in diverse stages? Dr. Ghali And He already created you by stages? Tafsir al-Jalalayn when verily He created you in stages? (atw?r is the plural of t?r, which means a state). Thus the sperm-drop is one state, the blood clot is another state, and so on, until the creation of the human being is complete: reflecting on [the manner of] his creation necessarily leads to belief in his Creator. | | 71:15 | Transliteration Alam taraw kayfa khalaqa AllahusabAAa samawatin tibaqa Sahih International Do you not consider how Allah has created seven heavens in layers Muhsin Khan See you not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another, Yusuf Ali "'See ye not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another, Dr. Ghali Have you not seen how Allah created seven heavens as strata, (i.e., in layers). Tafsir al-Jalalayn Have you not seen how God created seven heavens in layers, one on top of the other, | | 71:16 | Transliteration WajaAAala alqamara feehinna nooran wajaAAalaashshamsa siraja Sahih International And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp? Muhsin Khan And has made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp? Yusuf Ali "'And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (Glorious) Lamp? Dr. Ghali And He has made the moon therein for a light, and He has made the sun for a luminary? Tafsir al-Jalalayn and made the moon therein — that is to say, within their totality, [but] which is [effectively] true in the case of the heaven of this world — as a light and made the sun as a lamp?, as an illuminating lantern, more powerful than the light of the moon. | | 71:17 | Transliteration Wallahu anbatakum mina al-ardinabata Sahih International And Allah has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth. Muhsin Khan And Allah has brought you forth from the (dust of) earth. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.29, Page 97]. Yusuf Ali "'And Allah has produced you from the earth growing (gradually), Dr. Ghali And Allah has caused you to grow as a growth from the earth. Tafsir al-Jalalayn And God has caused you to grow, He has created you, from the earth, for He created your father Adam from it. | | 71:18 | Transliteration Thumma yuAAeedukum feehawayukhrijukum ikhraja Sahih International Then He will return you into it and extract you [another] extraction. Muhsin Khan Afterwards He will return you into it (the earth), and bring you forth (again on the Day of Resurrection)? Yusuf Ali "'And in the End He will return you into the (earth), and raise you forth (again at the Resurrection)? Dr. Ghali Thereafter He will bring you back into it, and He will bring you out (again) a (new) forthcoming (Literally: a bringing out). Tafsir al-Jalalayn Then He will make you return into it, entombed [in your graves], and bring you forth, for the resurrection, [with a veritable bringing forth]. | | 71:19 | Transliteration Wallahu jaAAala lakumu al-ardabisata Sahih International And Allah has made for you the earth an expanse Muhsin Khan And Allah has made for you the earth wide spread (an expanse). Yusuf Ali "'And Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out), Dr. Ghali And Allah has the earth for you as an outspread (rug), Tafsir al-Jalalayn And God has made the earth a flat [open] expanse for you, | | 71:20 | Transliteration Litaslukoo minha subulan fijaja Sahih International That you may follow therein roads of passage.' " Muhsin Khan That you may go about therein in broad roads. Yusuf Ali "'That ye may go about therein, in spacious roads.'" Dr. Ghali That you may travel along thereof (spacious) ways, ravines. "' Tafsir al-Jalalayn so that you may follow throughout it spacious routes.” ’ | | 71:21 | Transliteration Qala noohun rabbi innahum AAasawneewattabaAAoo man lam yazidhu maluhu wawaladuhu illakhasara Sahih International Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss. Muhsin Khan Nuh (Noah) said: "My Lord! They have disobeyed me, and followed one whose wealth and children give him no increase but only loss. Yusuf Ali Noah said: "O my Lord! They have disobeyed me, but they follow (men) whose wealth and children give them no increase but only Loss. Dr. Ghali Nuh said, "Lord! Surely they have disobeyed me, and closely followed him whose wealth and children have not increased them in anything except (greater) loss, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Noah said, ‘My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed, that is, the riffraff and the paupers [among them have followed], those whose wealth and children, namely, their leaders who have been blessed with such things (read wulduhu or waladuhu, ‘whose children’, the first of which is said to be the plural of walad, similar [in pattern] to khasab, khushb, or in fact [it is said to be] of the same meaning [as walad, but an alternative form] as in the case of bukhl or bakhal, ‘niggardliness’), only add to their loss, [to] their insolence and disbelief. | | 71:22 | Transliteration Wamakaroo makran kubbara Sahih International And they conspired an immense conspiracy. Muhsin Khan "And they have plotted a mighty plot. Yusuf Ali "And they have devised a tremendous Plot. Dr. Ghali And they have schemed a heinous scheming; Tafsir al-Jalalayn And they have devised, namely, the leaders, a mighty plot, extremely outrageous, by denying Noah and harming him as well as his followers, | | 71:23 | Transliteration Waqaloo la tatharunna alihatakumwala tatharunna waddan wala suwaAAanwala yaghootha wayaAAooqa wanasra Sahih International And said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr. Muhsin Khan "And they have said: 'You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa', nor Yaghuth, nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr (names of the idols); Yusuf Ali "And they have said (to each other), 'Abandon not your gods: Abandon neither Wadd nor Suwa', neither Yaguth nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr';- Dr. Ghali And they have said, ‘Definitely do not leave (behind) your gods, and do not definitely leave behind Wadd, nor Suwac, nor Yaghûth, and Yacûq, and Nasr (These are names of pagan gods. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and have said, to the riffraff: “Do not abandon your gods, and do not abandon Wadd (read Wadd or Wudd) nor Suw?‘, nor Yagh?th and Ya‘?q and Nasr” — these being the names of their idols. | | 71:24 | Transliteration Waqad adalloo katheeran walatazidi aththalimeena illa dalala Sahih International And already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error." Muhsin Khan "And indeed they have led many astray. And (O Allah): 'Grant no increase to the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, and disbelievers, etc.) save error." Yusuf Ali "They have already misled many; and grant Thou no increase to the wrong-doers but in straying (from their mark)." Dr. Ghali And they have already led many into error. And increase You Allah), the unjust ones in nothing except error!" Tafsir al-Jalalayn And they have certainly led astray, by these [gods], many, people, by commanding them to worship them. And do not [O God] increase the evildoers except in error!’ (wa-l? tazidi’l-z?lim?na ill? dal?lan is a supplement to qad adall?, ‘they have certainly led astray’): He [Noah] invoked God against them when it was revealed to him that, ‘None of your people will believe except he who has already believed’ [Q. 11:36]. | | 71:25 | Transliteration Mimma khatee-atihimoghriqoo faodkhiloo naran falam yajidoo lahum min dooniAllahi ansara Sahih International Because of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allah [any] helpers. Muhsin Khan Because of their sins they were drowned, then were made to enter the Fire, and they found none to help them instead of Allah. Yusuf Ali Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were made to enter the Fire (of Punishment): and they found- in lieu of Allah- none to help them. Dr. Ghali For whatever offenses (they committed), they were drowned, and then were made to enter a Fire; so they did not find, apart from Allah, any ready vindicators. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Because of (mimm?: m? indicates a relative clause) their iniquities (khat?y?hum: a variant reading has khat?’?tihim) they were drowned, by the Flood, then made to enter the Fire, with which they were punished underwater after drowning. And they did not find for themselves besides, that is to say, other than, God any helpers, to protect them against the chastisement. | | 71:26 | Transliteration Waqala noohun rabbi latathar AAala al-ardi mina alkafireenadayyara Sahih International And Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant. Muhsin Khan And Nuh (Noah) said: "My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers on the earth! Yusuf Ali And Noah, said: "O my Lord! Leave not of the Unbelievers, a single one on earth! Dr. Ghali And Nuh said, "Lord! Do not leave (out) upon the earth of the disbelievers any residence-dweller! Tafsir al-Jalalayn And Noah said, ‘My Lord, do not leave from among the disbelievers a single dweller upon the earth (dayy?r means ‘one who inhabits a dwelling [d?r]’), in other words, not one. | | 71:27 | Transliteration Innaka in tatharhum yudillooAAibadaka wala yalidoo illa fajirankaffara Sahih International Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and not beget except [every] wicked one and [confirmed] disbeliever. Muhsin Khan "If You leave them, they will mislead Your slaves, and they will beget none but wicked disbelievers." Yusuf Ali "For, if Thou dost leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Thy devotees, and they will breed none but wicked ungrateful ones. Dr. Ghali Surely in case You leave them behind, they will lead Your bondmen into error, and will beget none except the most- disbelieving impious. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Assuredly if You leave them, they will lead Your servants astray, and will beget only disbelieving profligates (f?jir and kaff?r derive [respectively] from yafjuru and yakfuru): he said this on account of the mentioned revelation that had been given to him. | | 71:28 | Transliteration Rabbi ighfir lee waliwalidayyawaliman dakhala baytiya mu/minan walilmu/mineena walmu/minatiwala tazidi aththalimeena illatabaran Sahih International My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction." Muhsin Khan "My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer, and all the believing men and women. And to the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, and disbelievers, etc.) grant You no increase but destruction!" Yusuf Ali "O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in Faith, and (all) believing men and believing women: and to the wrong-doers grant Thou no increase but in perdition!" Dr. Ghali Lord, Forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my home as believer, and male believers and female believers; and do not increase the unjust ones except in annihilation!" Tafsir al-Jalalayn My Lord, forgive me and my parents — both of whom were believers — and whoever enters my house, my dwelling or my place of worship, as a believer, and believing men and believing women, to the Day of Resurrection, and do not increase the evildoers except in ruin’, in destruction — and thus they were destroyed. |
