Transliteration
Walmursalati AAurfa
Sahih International
By those [winds] sent forth in gusts
Muhsin Khan
By the winds (or angels or the Messengers of Allah) sent forth one after another.
Yusuf Ali
By the (Winds) sent forth one after another (to man's profit);
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the emissaries in a (continual) series with benevolence,

By those sent in succession (‘urfan), that is, [by] the winds that follow [one another] in succession, like the mane (‘urf) of a horse, one part [of hair] coming after the other (‘urfan is in the accusative because it is a circumstantial qualifier);

And the winds that blow violently

And by the winds that blow violently,

Which then blow violently in tempestuous Gusts,

Then (by) tempests (storming) tempestuously,

by the raging hurricanes, the violent winds;

Wannashirati nashra

And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]

And by the winds that scatter clouds and rain;

And scatter (things) far and wide;

And (by) the spreaders spreading,

by the sweeping spreaders, [by] the winds that scatter the rains;

Falfariqati farqa

And those [angels] who bring criterion

And by the Verses (of the Quran) that separate the right from the wrong.

Then separate them, one from another,

Then (by) the ones who separate with a (distinct) separation,

by the decisive discriminators, that is, [by] the verses of the Qur’?n, which discriminate between truth and falsehood, and between what is lawful and what is unlawful;

Falmulqiyati thikra

And those [angels] who deliver a message

And by the angels that bring the revelations to the Messengers,

Then spread abroad a Message,

Then (by) the ones casting a Remembrance,

by the casters of the remembrance, that is, [by] angels that descend with the revelation upon the prophets and messengers, casting the revelation onto the [various] communities [of mankind],

As justification or warning,

To cut off all excuses or to warn;

Whether of Justification or of Warning;-

to excuse or to warn, that is to say, in order to excuse or to warn on behalf of God, exalted be He (a variant reading [for nudhran and ‘udhran] has nudhuran and ‘udhuran).

Innama tooAAadoona lawaqiAA
Sahih International
Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.

Surely, what you are promised must come to pass.

Assuredly, what ye are promised must come to pass.

Surely that which you are promised is indeed befalling!
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely that which you are promised, O disbelievers of Mecca, in the way of resurrection and chastisement, will befall: it will be, without any doubt.

Fa-itha annujoomu tumisat

So when the stars are obliterated

And when the messengers' time has come...

And when the Messengers are gathered to their time appointed;

And when the messengers are (all) appointed a time (to collect);-

And when the Messengers' (time) is fixed-

and when the time is set for the [testimony of the] messengers (read uqqitat or wuqqitat), that is to say, [when] they are gathered to an appointed time,

For what Day was it postponed?

For what Day are these signs postponed?

For what Day are these (portents) deferred?

To whichever Day is (this) term appointed?

For what day — for a tremendous day — has it been appointed?, [it has been appointed] for witnessing [of the messengers] against their communities [to the effect] that they delivered [their messages from God].

For the Day of Judgement.

For the Day of sorting out (the men of Paradise from the men destined for Hell).

For the Day of Decision, for creatures (from this one may infer the response to [the clauses beginning with] idh?, ‘when’, in other words, ‘[when …], the decision will be made for [all] creatures’).

Wama adraka ma yawmualfasl
Sahih International
And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?

And what will explain to you what is the Day of sorting out?

And what will explain to thee what is the Day of Sorting out?

And what makes you realize what the Day of Verdict is?

And how would you know what the Day of Decision is? — emphasising the enormity of its terror.

Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeen

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

Woe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!

Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!

Upon that Day woe to the beliers!

Woe to the deniers on that day! — a threat of chastisement for them.

Alam nuhliki al-awwaleen

Did We not destroy the former peoples?

Did We not destroy the ancients?

Did We not destroy the men of old (for their evil)?
Dr. Ghali
Did We not cause the earliest people to perish;

Did We not destroy the ancients, for their denial, in other words, We certainly destroyed them,

Thumma nutbiAAuhumu al-akhireen
Sahih International
Then We will follow them with the later ones.

So shall We make later generations to follow them.

So shall We make later (generations) follow them.

Thereafter We make the later generations follow them up?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
then made the latter folk follow them?, [the latter folk] of those who denied, such as the disbelievers of Mecca, whom We will destroy.

Kathalika nafAAalu bilmujrimeen
Sahih International
Thus do We deal with the criminals.
Muhsin Khan
Thus do We deal with the Mujrimun (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, criminals, etc.)!
Yusuf Ali
Thus do We deal with men of sin.
Dr. Ghali
Thus We perform against the criminals.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So, just as We dealt with those who denied, will We deal with the guilty, with every individual who will be guilty in the future, and destroy them.
77:19

Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeen

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

Woe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!

Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!

Upon that Day woe to the beliers!

Woe to the deniers on that day! — [reiterated] for emphasis.
77:20

Transliteration
Alam nakhluqkum min ma-in maheen
Sahih International
Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?

Did We not create you from a worthless water (semen, etc.)?
Yusuf Ali
Have We not created you from a fluid (held) despicable?-
Dr. Ghali
Did We not create you of a contemptible water,

Did We not create you from a base fluid, one that is delicate — and this is semen,

FajaAAalnahu fee qararinmakeen

And We placed it in a firm lodging

Then We placed it in a place of safety (womb),

The which We placed in a place of rest, firmly fixed,

Then We made it in an established reposing,

then lodged it in a secure abode, that is, the womb,

for a known span?, namely, the time for delivery.

Faqadarna faniAAma alqadiroon

And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.

So We did measure, and We are the Best to measure (the things).

For We do determine (according to need); for We are the best to determine (things).

So We determined; so Excellent the Determiners are We!

Thus We were able, to do this; so [how] excellent able ones We are!

Have We not made the earth a container

Have We not made the earth a receptacle (kif?tan is a verbal noun, from kafata, meaning damma, ‘enclosed’), that is, an enclosure,

Of the living and the dead?

WajaAAalna feeha rawasiyashamikhatin waasqaynakum maan furata

And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.

And have placed therein firm, and tall mountains; and have given you to drink sweet water?
Yusuf Ali
And made therein mountains standing firm, lofty (in stature); and provided for you water sweet (and wholesome)?
Dr. Ghali
And We made therein lofty anchorages, (i.e., mountains) and We made you to drink water grateful (to taste).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and set therein soaring mountains and give you sweet water to drink?

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

Intaliqoo ila ma kuntumbihi tukaththiboon

[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.

(It will be said to the disbelievers): "Depart you to that which you used to deny!

(It will be said:) "Depart ye to that which ye used to reject as false!
Dr. Ghali
Go off to what you used to cry as lies!
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And on the Day of Resurrection it will be said to the deniers: Depart to that, chastisement, which you used to deny!

Intaliqoo ila thillinthee thalathi shuAAab

Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns

"Depart you to a shadow (of Hell-fire smoke ascending) in three columns,

"Depart ye to a Shadow (of smoke ascending) in three columns,
Dr. Ghali
Go off to a three-pronged (Literally: comprising three prongs) shade.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Depart to a triple-forked shadow — this is the smoke of Hell, which, as it rises, splits into three parts because of its magnitude —

La thaleelin walayughnee mina allahab
Sahih International
[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."

"Neither shading, nor of any use against the fierce flame of the Fire."
Yusuf Ali
"(Which yields) no shade of coolness, and is of no use against the fierce Blaze.
Dr. Ghali
With no plenteous shade and of no avail against the flames;

which is neither shady, [neither] protective, [unable] to shade them from the heat of that Day, nor of any avail against, [nor] wards off from them anything of, the flame, the Fire.

Innaha tarmee bishararin kalqasr
Sahih International
Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,

Verily! It (Hell) throws sparks (huge) as Al-Qasr [a fort or a Qasr (huge log of wood)],
Yusuf Ali
"Indeed it throws about sparks (huge) as Forts,
Dr. Ghali
Surely it throws up sparks like palace (s) (Or: dry faggots).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed it, that is, the Fire, throws up sparks, namely, those [flame] that are thrown by it into the air, [huge] like palace edifices, in terms of their enormity and vertical extension,

Kaannahu jimalatun sufr
Sahih International
As if they were yellowish [black] camels.
Muhsin Khan
As if they were Jimalatun Sufr (yellow camels or bundles of ropes)."
Yusuf Ali
"As if there were (a string of) yellow camels (marching swiftly)."
Dr. Ghali
As if they were yellow (heaps) of cables (Or: golden herds).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
as if they were [dark] yellow camels (jim?l?tun is the plural of jimalatun, the plural of jamalun; a variant reading has jim?latun), in terms of their shape and colour. In had?th [it is stated], ‘The sparks of humans [thrown into the air by the Fire] are black as pitch (q?r)’; the Arabs call dark camels sufr, ‘yellow’, because a touch of yellow is mixed with their blackish colour, and therefore it is said that ‘yellow’ in this verse [actually] means ‘black’, on account of what has been mentioned; but some say no [to this interpretation]; (sharar is the plural of shar?ra; q?r is q?r, ‘pitch’).

Hatha yawmu la yantiqoon

This is a Day they will not speak,

That will be a Day when they shall not speak (during some part of it),

That will be a Day when they shall not be able to speak.

This is the Day they will not pronounce (a word),

This, namely, the Day of Resurrection, is the day in which they will not utter, anything,

Wala yu/thanu lahum fayaAAtathiroon

Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse.

And they will not be permitted to put forth any excuse.

Nor will it be open to them to put forth pleas.

Nor be permitted to, then excuse themselves.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
nor will they be given permission, to offer excuses, and so offer excuses (fa-ya‘tadhir?na is a supplement to yu’dhanu, ‘given permission’, but without being a direct result of it, since it belongs within the confines of the [general] denial [of permission], in other words, ‘there will be no permission, hence no excuses’).

Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeen

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.

That will be a Day of Decision! We have brought you and the men of old together!

That will be a Day of Sorting out! We shall gather you together and those before (you)!
Dr. Ghali
This is the Day of Verdict: We have gathered you and the earliest (people);
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
‘This is the Day of Decision. We have brought you, O deniers from this community, and the ancients together, [the ancients] from among the deniers before you, so that you will [all] be reckoned with and chastised together;

Fa-in kana lakum kaydun fakeedoon
Sahih International
So if you have a plan, then plan against Me.
Muhsin Khan
So if you have a plot, use it against Me (Allah)!
Yusuf Ali
Now, if ye have a trick (or plot), use it against Me!
Dr. Ghali
So, if (ever) you have any plotting, then plot against Me!
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So if you have any stratagems, any ploy to ward off your chastisement, try your strategems against Me!’ — put them into effect!

Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeen

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

Woe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!

Upon that Day woe to the beliers!

Woe to the deniers on that day!

Transliteration
Inna almuttaqeena fee thilalinwaAAuyoon
Sahih International
Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs

Verily, the Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2) shall be amidst shades and springs.
Yusuf Ali
As to the Righteous, they shall be amidst (cool) shades and springs (of water).
Dr. Ghali
Surely the pious will be in shades and springs,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly the God-fearing will be amid shades, that is, amid clusters of trees, since there is no sun therein from whose heat to seek shade, and springs, issuing forth with water,

Wafawakiha mimma yashtahoon
Sahih International
And fruits from whatever they desire,

And fruits, such as they desire.
Yusuf Ali
And (they shall have) fruits,- all they desire.
Dr. Ghali
And such fruits as they crave.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and fruits such as they desire: this is meant to point out that eating and drinking in Paradise is [done] according to their desires, in contrast to [the case in] this world, where it is predominantly determined by what people are able to procure. It will also be said to them:

Kuloo washraboo hanee-an bimakuntum taAAmaloon
Sahih International
[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."

"Eat and drink comfortably for that which you used to do.
Yusuf Ali
"Eat ye and drink ye to your heart's content: for that ye worked (Righteousness).
Dr. Ghali
"Eat and drink, rejoicing with wholesome appetite, for whatever you were doing."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
‘Eat and drink in [full] enjoyment (han?’an is a circumstantial qualifier, in other words, mutahanni’?na) for what you used to do’, in the way of obedience.

Transliteration
Inna kathalika najzee almuhsineen
Sahih International
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Muhsin Khan
Verily, thus We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers).
Yusuf Ali
Thus do We certainly reward the Doers of Good.
Dr. Ghali
Thus surely We recompense the fair-doers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed so, in the same way that We reward the God-fearing, do We reward the virtuous.

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

Woe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!

Kuloo watamattaAAoo qaleelan innakummujrimoon
Sahih International
[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.
Muhsin Khan
(O you disbelievers)! Eat and enjoy yourselves (in this worldly life) for a little while. Verily, you are the Mujrimun (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners, criminals, etc.).
Yusuf Ali
(O ye unjust!) Eat ye and enjoy yourselves (but) a little while, for that ye are Sinners.
Dr. Ghali
"Eat and enjoy (your life) a little: surely you are criminals".
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
‘Eat and enjoy — addressing the disbelievers in this world — for a little, time, at the end of which comes death — this is meant as a threat for them. Indeed you are guilty!’

Woe, that Day, to the deniers.

Woe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)!

Wa-itha qeela lahumu irkaAAoo layarkaAAoon

And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.

And when it is said to them: "Bow down yourself (in prayer)!" They bow not down (offer not their prayers).
Yusuf Ali
And when it is said to them, "Prostrate yourselves!" they do not so.
Dr. Ghali
And when it is said to them, "Bow down!" They do not bow down.

For when it is said to them, ‘Bow down!’, perform prayer, they do not bow down, they do not perform prayer.

Then in what statement after the Qur'an will they believe?

Then in what statement after this (the Quran) will they believe?

Then what Message, after that, will they believe in?

So, in whichever discourse after (this) do they believe?
