Tafsir al-Jalalayn About what, about what thing, are they, the people of Quraysh, questioning one another? | | 78:2 | Transliteration AAani annaba-i alAAatheem Sahih International About the great news - Muhsin Khan About the great news, (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, the Quran, which Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)brought and the Day of Resurrection, etc.), Yusuf Ali Concerning the Great News, Dr. Ghali Of the tremendous tidings, (The Arabic word is singular). Tafsir al-Jalalayn About the awesome tiding ([this is] the explication of that ‘thing’; the interrogative is meant to emphasise its magnitude) — this [awesome tiding] is the Qur’?n, comprising [news of] the Resurrection and so on, which the Prophet (s) brought — | | 78:3 | Transliteration Allathee hum feehi mukhtalifoon Sahih International That over which they are in disagreement. Muhsin Khan About which they are in disagreement. Yusuf Ali About which they cannot agree. Dr. Ghali Concerning which they (continue) differing among themselves. Tafsir al-Jalalayn concerning which they are at variance, for the believers affirm it, while the disbelievers repudiate it. | | 78:4 | Transliteration Kalla sayaAAlamoon Sahih International No! They are going to know. Muhsin Khan Nay, they will come to know! Yusuf Ali Verily, they shall soon (come to) know! Dr. Ghali Not at all! They will soon know! Tafsir al-Jalalayn No indeed! — a disavowal — they will come to know, what will befall them for their rejection of it. | | 78:5 | Transliteration Thumma kalla sayaAAlamoon Sahih International Then, no! They are going to know. Muhsin Khan Nay, again, they will come to know! Yusuf Ali Verily, verily they shall soon (come to) know! Dr. Ghali Thereafter, not at all! They will soon know! Tafsir al-Jalalayn Again, no indeed! They will come to know! ([reiterated] for emphasis; thumma is added here to declare that the second threat of chastisement is more severe than the first). God, exalted be He, then alludes to His power to resurrect, saying: | | 78:6 | Transliteration Alam najAAali al-arda mihada Sahih International Have We not made the earth a resting place? Muhsin Khan Have We not made the earth as a bed, Yusuf Ali Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse, Dr. Ghali Have We not made the earth as a cradling, (Or: level lands). Tafsir al-Jalalayn Have We not made the earth a cradle, a bed, like a cradle, | | 78:7 | Transliteration Waljibala awtada Sahih International And the mountains as stakes? Muhsin Khan And the mountains as pegs? Yusuf Ali And the mountains as pegs? Dr. Ghali And the mountains as bulwarks? Tafsir al-Jalalayn and the mountains pegs?, with which the earth is tied down like tents are tied down with pegs (the interrogative is meant as an affirmative). | | 78:8 | Transliteration Wakhalaqnakum azwaja Sahih International And We created you in pairs Muhsin Khan And We have created you in pairs (male and female, tall and short, good and bad, etc.). Yusuf Ali And (have We not) created you in pairs, Dr. Ghali And We created you in pairs, Tafsir al-Jalalayn And created you in pairs?, males and females, | | 78:9 | Transliteration WajaAAalna nawmakum subata Sahih International And made your sleep [a means for] rest Muhsin Khan And have made your sleep as a thing for rest. Yusuf Ali And made your sleep for rest, Dr. Ghali And We have made your sleep for repose, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and made your sleep for rest?, repose for your bodies, | | 78:10 | Transliteration WajaAAalna allayla libasa Sahih International And made the night as clothing Muhsin Khan And have made the night as a covering (through its darkness), Yusuf Ali And made the night as a covering, Dr. Ghali And We have made the night for a garment, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and made the night a cloak?, to cover you with its darkness, | | 78:11 | Transliteration WajaAAalna annaharamaAAasha Sahih International And made the day for livelihood Muhsin Khan And have made the day for livelihood. Yusuf Ali And made the day as a means of subsistence? Dr. Ghali And We have made the daytime for (earning) a livelihood. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and made the day for livelihood?, a time for seeking livelihood, | | 78:12 | Transliteration Wabanayna fawqakum sabAAan shidada Sahih International And constructed above you seven strong [heavens] Muhsin Khan And We have built above you seven strong (heavens), Yusuf Ali And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments, Dr. Ghali And We have built above you seven strong (heavens), Tafsir al-Jalalayn and built above you seven mighty ones?, seven heavens (shid?d is the plural of shad?da) that is to say, strong and sturdy unaffected by the passage of time, | | 78:13 | Transliteration WajaAAalna sirajan wahhaja Sahih International And made [therein] a burning lamp Muhsin Khan And have made (therein) a shinning lamp (sun). Yusuf Ali And placed (therein) a Light of Splendour? Dr. Ghali And We have made a glowing luminary. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and set a radiant lamp?, namely, the sun, | | 78:14 | Transliteration Waanzalna mina almuAAsiratimaan thajjaja Sahih International And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water Muhsin Khan And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water. Yusuf Ali And do We not send down from the clouds water in abundance, Dr. Ghali And We have sent down from the clouds (i.e., rain clouds) pressing forth water cascading. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and sent down from the rain-clouds (mu‘sir?t), the clouds due to give rain (similar to [the term] mu‘sir, which denotes a girl nearing menstruation) cascading water?, pouring forth, | | 78:15 | Transliteration Linukhrija bihi habban wanabata Sahih International That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation Muhsin Khan That We may produce therewith corn and vegetations, Yusuf Ali That We may produce therewith corn and vegetables, Dr. Ghali That We may bring out thereby grain and growth, Tafsir al-Jalalayn that with it We may bring forth grains, such as wheat, and plants, such as figs, | | 78:16 | Transliteration Wajannatin alfafa Sahih International And gardens of entwined growth. Muhsin Khan And gardens of thick growth. Yusuf Ali And gardens of luxurious growth? Dr. Ghali And gardens entwined. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and gardens, orchards, of intertwining foliage? (alf?f is the plural of laf?f, similar [in pattern] to shar?f, ‘noble’, [plural] ashr?f). | | 78:17 | Transliteration Inna yawma alfasli kana meeqata Sahih International Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time - Muhsin Khan Verily, the Day of Decision is a fixed time, Yusuf Ali Verily the Day of Sorting out is a thing appointed, Dr. Ghali Surely the Day of Verdict has been (set) as a fixed time, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Verily the Day of Decision, for creatures, is the tryst, a time [fixed] for reward and punishment, | | 78:18 | Transliteration Yawma yunfakhu fee assoorifata/toona afwaja Sahih International The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes Muhsin Khan The Day when the Trumpet will be blown, and you shall come forth in crowds (groups); Yusuf Ali The Day that the Trumpet shall be sounded, and ye shall come forth in crowds; Dr. Ghali The Day when the Trumpet will be blown; then you will come up in troops, Tafsir al-Jalalayn the day the Trumpet, the Horn, is blown (yawma yunfakhu f?’l-s?ri is either a substitution for, or an explication of, yawma’l-fasli, ‘the Day of Decision’, the blower being Isr?f?l) and you come, forth from your graves to the site [of the Resurrection], in droves, in diverse groups, | | 78:19 | Transliteration Wafutihati assamao fakanatabwaba Sahih International And the heaven is opened and will become gateways Muhsin Khan And the heaven shall be opened, and it will become as gates, Yusuf Ali And the heavens shall be opened as if there were doors, Dr. Ghali And the heaven is opened, (and) so has become gates, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and the heaven is opened (read futtihat or futihat), sundered for the descent of the angels, and becomes as gates, it becomes [a heaven] with gates, | | 78:20 | Transliteration Wasuyyirati aljibalu fakanatsaraba Sahih International And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage. Muhsin Khan And the mountains shall be moved away from their places and they will be as if they were a mirage. Yusuf Ali And the mountains shall vanish, as if they were a mirage. Dr. Ghali And the mountains are made to travel, (and) so have become a mirage. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and the mountains are set in motion, dislocated from their positions, and become as a mirage, as fine dust, that is to say, like it in terms of its levity when in motion. | | 78:21 | Transliteration Inna jahannama kanat mirsada Sahih International Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait Muhsin Khan Truly, Hell is a place of ambush, Yusuf Ali Truly Hell is as a place of ambush, Dr. Ghali Surely Hell has been observing, (i.e., in expectation of the criminals). Tafsir al-Jalalayn Verily Hell lurks in ambush (mirs?dan, in the sense of r?sidatan or mursidatan, ‘lying in wait’) | | 78:22 | Transliteration Littagheena maaba Sahih International For the transgressors, a place of return, Muhsin Khan A dwelling place for the Taghun (those who transgress the boundry limits set by Allah like polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, hyprocrites, sinners, criminals, etc.), Yusuf Ali For the transgressors a place of destination: Dr. Ghali For the inordinate (as) a resorting, Tafsir al-Jalalayn for the rebellious, the disbelievers, who will not be able to avoid it, [it is] a resort, a retreat for them, and so they will enter it, | | 78:23 | Transliteration Labitheena feeha ahqaba Sahih International In which they will remain for ages [unending]. Muhsin Khan They will abide therein for ages, Yusuf Ali They will dwell therein for ages. Dr. Ghali Lingering therein for epochs. Tafsir al-Jalalayn to remain (l?bith?na is an implied circumstantial qualifier, in other words, their remaining therein will be decreed [to be]) therein for ages, for endless epochs (ahq?b is the plural of huqb), | | 78:24 | Transliteration La yathooqoona feehabardan wala sharaba Sahih International They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink Muhsin Khan Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink. Yusuf Ali Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink, Dr. Ghali They will not taste therein either coolness or any drink. Tafsir al-Jalalayn tasting in it neither coolness, [neither] sleep, [something] which they will not taste [therein], nor drink, [nor] anything that is imbibed for the sake of its delightful taste, | | 78:25 | Transliteration Illa hameeman waghassaqa Sahih International Except scalding water and [foul] purulence - Muhsin Khan Except boiling water, and dirty wound discharges. Yusuf Ali Save a boiling fluid and a fluid, dark, murky, intensely cold, Dr. Ghali Except scalding water and (overflowing) pus, Tafsir al-Jalalayn except boiling water, of extreme temperatures, and pus (read ghas?qan or ghass?qan, which is the vile matter that is emitted by the [bodies of the] inhabitants of the Fire), which is what they will [indeed] taste. They are given this pair [of tortures], | | 78:26 | Transliteration Jazaan wifaqa Sahih International An appropriate recompense. Muhsin Khan An exact recompense (according to their evil crimes). Yusuf Ali A fitting recompense (for them). Dr. Ghali An agreeable recompense. Tafsir al-Jalalayn as a fitting requital, one that accords with [the nature of] their deeds, for there is no sin greater than disbelief, and no chastisement greater than the Fire. | | 78:27 | Transliteration Innahum kanoo la yarjoona hisaba Sahih International Indeed, they were not expecting an account Muhsin Khan For verily, they used not to look for a reckoning. Yusuf Ali For that they used not to fear any account (for their deeds), Dr. Ghali Surely they did not hope for a reckoning, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Indeed they never feared any reckoning, given their rejection of the Resurrection, | | 78:28 | Transliteration Wakaththaboo bi-ayatinakiththaba Sahih International And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial. Muhsin Khan But they belied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, and that which Our Prophet (Peace be upon him) brought) completely. Yusuf Ali But they (impudently) treated Our Signs as false. Dr. Ghali And they cried lies to Our signs with constant cries (of lies). Tafsir al-Jalalayn and they denied Our signs, the Qur’?n, mendaciously, | | 78:29 | Transliteration Wakulla shay-in ahsaynahu kitaba Sahih International But all things We have enumerated in writing. Muhsin Khan And all things We have recorded in a Book. Yusuf Ali And all things have We preserved on record. Dr. Ghali And everything We have enumerated in a Book. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and everything, in the way of deeds, have We kept count of, have We recorded precisely, in a Book, as [individual] written records in the Preserved Tablet, in order to requite [creatures] in accordance with them, including [the record of] their denial of the Qur’?n. | | 78:30 | Transliteration Fathooqoo falan nazeedakum illaAAathaba Sahih International "So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment." Muhsin Khan So taste you (the results of your evil actions); no increase shall We give you, except in torment. Yusuf Ali "So taste ye (the fruits of your deeds); for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment." Dr. Ghali "So taste! We will never increase you in anything except in torment." Tafsir al-Jalalayn ‘So [now] taste! — in other words, it will be said to them in the Hereafter, when the chastisement has befallen them: taste [now] your requital! For We will increase you in nothing but chastisement’, in addition to your [due] chastisement. | | 78:31 | Transliteration Inna lilmuttaqeena mafaza Sahih International Indeed, for the righteous is attainment - Muhsin Khan Verily, for the Muttaqun, there will be a success (Paradise); Yusuf Ali Verily for the Righteous there will be a fulfilment of (the heart's) desires; Dr. Ghali Surely for the pious there is a place of triumph, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Truly for the God-fearing there will be a triumph, a place of triumph, in Paradise: | | 78:32 | Transliteration Hada-iqa waaAAnaba Sahih International Gardens and grapevines Muhsin Khan Gardens and grapeyards; Yusuf Ali Gardens enclosed, and grapevines; Dr. Ghali Enclosed orchards, and vineyards, Tafsir al-Jalalayn gardens, orchards (had?’iqa is either a substitution for, or an explication of, maf?zan, ‘a triumph’) and vineyards (wa-a‘n?ban is a supplement to maf?zan, ‘a triumph’), | | 78:33 | Transliteration WakawaAAiba atraba Sahih International And full-breasted [companions] of equal age Muhsin Khan And young full-breasted (mature) maidens of equal age; Yusuf Ali And voluptuous women of equal age; Dr. Ghali And youthful virgins, like of age, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and buxom maidens (kaw?‘ib is the plural of k?‘ib) of equal age (atr?b is the plural of tirb), | | 78:34 | Transliteration Waka/san dihaqa Sahih International And a full cup. Muhsin Khan And a full cup (of wine). Yusuf Ali And a cup full (to the brim). Dr. Ghali And a cup brimful. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and a brimming cup, wine filling the vessels in which it is in; in s?rat al-Qit?l [it is said], and rivers of wine [Q. 47:15]. | | 78:35 | Transliteration La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwanwala kiththaba Sahih International No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood - Muhsin Khan No Laghw (dirty, false, evil talk) shall they hear therein, nor lying; Yusuf Ali No vanity shall they hear therein, nor Untruth:- Dr. Ghali Therein they will hear no idle talk nor cry of lies. Tafsir al-Jalalayn They will not hear in it, that is, [in] Paradise, when they drink wine and in other situations, any vain talk, any words of falsehood, or lies, between one another (read kidh?ban, to mean kadhiban, ‘lies’, or kidhdh?ban to mean takdh?ban, ‘lying’), in contrast to what happens in this world when wine is drunk, | | 78:36 | Transliteration Jazaan min rabbika AAataan hisaba Sahih International [As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account, Muhsin Khan A reward from your Lord, an ample calculated gift (according to the best of their good deeds). Yusuf Ali Recompense from thy Lord, a gift, (amply) sufficient, Dr. Ghali (It is for) recompense from your Lord, a gift, a reckoning, Tafsir al-Jalalayn [this will be] a reward from your Lord, in other words, God has rewarded them with this reward as, a gift (‘at?’an substitutes for jaz?’an, ‘reward’) that is sufficing, [that is] abundant (his?ban, [as meaning ‘abundant’] derives from their saying a‘t?n? fa-ahsaban?, ‘he gave me so abundantly that I said, “that is enough for me”’ [hasb?]), | | 78:37 | Transliteration Rabbi assamawati wal-ardiwama baynahuma arrahmani layamlikoona minhu khitaba Sahih International [From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech. Muhsin Khan (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatsoever is in between them, the Most Beneficent, none can dare to speak with Him (on the Day of Resurrection except after His Leave). Yusuf Ali (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, (Allah) Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him. Dr. Ghali (From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, The All-Merciful; they possess (no power) of addressing Him. Tafsir al-Jalalayn [from] the Lord of the heavens and the earth (read rabbi, ‘[from] the Lord of’, or rabbu, ‘[He is] the Lord of’) and all that is between them, the Compassionate One (likewise [read rahm?ni or rahm?nu], or read rahm?nu with rabbi [for the preceding]), Whom, exalted be He, they, that is, creatures, will not be able to address, that is to say, not one of them will be able to address Him for fear of Him, | | 78:38 | Transliteration Yawma yaqoomu arroohu walmala-ikatusaffan la yatakallamoona illa man athinalahu arrahmanu waqala sawaba Sahih International The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct. Muhsin Khan The Day that Ar-Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel) or another angel] and the angels will stand forth in rows, none shall speak except him whom the Most Beneficent (Allah) allows, and he will speak what is right. Yusuf Ali The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by (Allah) Most Gracious, and He will say what is right. Dr. Ghali On the Day when the Spirit and the Angels rise up in ranks, they will not speak, except him (to) whom The All-Merciful has given permission and who speaks (Literally: says) right. Tafsir al-Jalalayn on the day (yawma is the adverbial qualifier for l? yamlik?na, ‘they will not be able to’) when the Spirit, Gabriel, or God’s hosts, and the angels stand arrayed (saffan is a circumstantial qualifier, in other words, mustaff?na). They, creatures, will not speak, except him whom the Compassionate One permits, to speak, and who says what is right, from among the believers and the angels: as if [meaning] that they will intercede for he whom He approves of. | | 78:39 | Transliteration Thalika alyawmu alhaqqu famanshaa ittakhatha ila rabbihi maaba Sahih International That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return. Muhsin Khan That is without doubt the True Day, so, whosoever wills, let him seek a place with (or a way to) His Lord (by obeying Him in this worldly life)! Yusuf Ali That Day will be the sure Reality: Therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) return to his Lord! Dr. Ghali That is the True Day. So whoever decides, should seek a resorting to his Lord (i.e., by doing righteous deeds). Tafsir al-Jalalayn That is the True Day, whose coming to pass is definite, namely, the Day of Resurrection. So whoever wishes [to], let him seek resort with his Lord, a return [to Him], that is to say, [let him] return to God by being obedient to Him, so that he may be secure from chastisement in it. | | 78:40 | Transliteration Inna antharnakum AAathabanqareeban yawma yanthuru almaro ma qaddamatyadahu wayaqoolu alkafiru ya laytanee kuntuturaba Sahih International Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!" Muhsin Khan Verily, We have warned you of a near torment, the Day when man will see that (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the disbeliever will say: "Woe to me! Would that I were dust!" Yusuf Ali Verily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were (metre) dust!" Dr. Ghali Surely We have warned you of a near torment on the Day when a person will look at whatever his hands have forwarded, and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, would that I were dust!" Tafsir al-Jalalayn Lo! We have warned you, O disbelievers of Mecca, of a chastisement that is near, the chastisement of the impending Day of Resurrection — for anything that is impending is [also] near — the day (yawma adverbially qualifies ‘adh?ban, ‘a chastisement’, by describing it) when a person, [when] every person, will behold what his hands have sent ahead, of good and evil, and the disbeliever will say, ‘O (y? is a particle used to call attention to something) would that I were dust!’, in other words, and not be chastised. He says this when God, exalted be He, says to the beasts, after each of them has retaliated against the other, ‘Be dust!’. |
