| 79:1 | Transliteration WannaziAAati gharqa Sahih International By those [angels] who extract with violence Muhsin Khan By those (angels) who pull out (the souls of the disbelievers and the wicked) with great violence; Yusuf Ali By the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence; Dr. Ghali And (by) the pluckers drowning, (i.e., Angels plucking the disbelievers). Tafsir al-Jalalayn By those that wrest, [by] the angels who wrest the souls of disbelievers, violently; | | 79:2 | Transliteration Wannashitati nashta Sahih International And [by] those who remove with ease Muhsin Khan By those (angels) who gently take out (the souls of the believers); Yusuf Ali By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed); Dr. Ghali And (by) the brisk (angels acting) briskly, Tafsir al-Jalalayn by those that draw out, [by] the angels who draw out the souls of believers, gently; | | 79:3 | Transliteration Wassabihati sabha Sahih International And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming Muhsin Khan And by those that swim along (i.e. angels or planets in their orbits, etc.). Yusuf Ali And by those who glide along (on errands of mercy), Dr. Ghali And (by) the swimmers swimming (serenely), (Or: gliding; horses racing; celestial bodies racing). Tafsir al-Jalalayn by those that glide serenely, [by] the angels who descend from the heavens with His command, exalted be He; | | 79:4 | Transliteration Fassabiqati sabqa Sahih International And those who race each other in a race Muhsin Khan And by those that press forward as in a race (i.e. the angels or stars or the horses, etc.). Yusuf Ali Then press forward as in a race, Dr. Ghali Then (by) the outstrippers outstripping (smoothly), Tafsir al-Jalalayn by those that race forward, [by] the angels who race forward to Paradise with the souls of believers; | | 79:5 | Transliteration Falmudabbirati amra Sahih International And those who arrange [each] matter, Muhsin Khan And by those angels who arrange to do the Commands of their Lord, (so verily, you disbelievers will be called to account). Yusuf Ali Then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord), Dr. Ghali Then (by) the directors (conducting) according to His Command. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and by those that direct the affair, [by] the angels who direct the affairs of this world, that is to say, they descend with the directions for it [from God] (the response to all of these oath clauses has been omitted, understood to be [something like], la-tub‘athunna y? kuff?ra Makka, ‘you shall certainly be resurrected, O disbelievers of Mecca!’, which is also the operator of [the following clause]): | | 79:6 | Transliteration Yawma tarjufu arrajifa Sahih International On the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [creation], Muhsin Khan On the Day (when the first blowing of the Trumpet is blown), the earth and the mountains will shake violently (and everybody will die), Yusuf Ali One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion, Dr. Ghali On the Day when the (first) commotion commoves, Tafsir al-Jalalayn the day when the Tremor quakes, that is to say, the first blast, as a result of which everything will be shaken violently (thus it [the subject] has been described in terms of the effect it produces), | | 79:7 | Transliteration TatbaAAuha arradifa Sahih International There will follow it the subsequent [one]. Muhsin Khan The second blowing of the Trumpet follows it (and everybody will be raised up), Yusuf Ali Followed by oft-repeated (commotions): Dr. Ghali Followed by the subsequent (commotion), Tafsir al-Jalalayn and is followed by the Aftershock, the second blast; between the two [blasts] is a span of forty years (the sentence [tatba‘uh?’l-r?difatu] is a circumstantial qualifier referring to al-r?jifa, ‘the Tremor’, in other words, the ‘day’ can [adverbially] accommodate both blasts and other events, and so for this reason it can also properly function as the adverbial qualifier for the Resurrection that will take place after the second [blast]); | | 79:8 | Transliteration Quloobun yawma-ithin wajifa Sahih International Hearts, that Day, will tremble, Muhsin Khan (Some) hearts that Day will shake with fear and anxiety. Yusuf Ali Hearts that Day will be in agitation; Dr. Ghali Hearts upon that Day will be agitated, Tafsir al-Jalalayn on that day hearts will be trembling, frightened and anxious, | | 79:9 | Transliteration Absaruha khashiAAa Sahih International Their eyes humbled. Muhsin Khan Their eyes cast down. Yusuf Ali Cast down will be (their owners') eyes. Dr. Ghali Their beholdings (i.e., eyesights) will be submissive. Tafsir al-Jalalayn their eyes humbled, abject, because of the terror that they see. | | 79:10 | Transliteration Yaqooloona a-inna lamardoodoona feealhafira Sahih International They are [presently] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]? Muhsin Khan They say: "Shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state of life? Yusuf Ali They say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state? Dr. Ghali They will say, "will we surely be turned back to our former state? (Some interpret the Arabic to mean "in the grave" or "gravediggers"). Tafsir al-Jalalayn They, those of the [mentioned] hearts and eyes, will say, mockingly and in rejection of the Resurrection: ‘Are we indeed (read a-inn? pronouncing both hamzas, or by not pronouncing the second, and inserting an alif between them in both cases, and in both instances) being restored as before? Shall we be restored to life after death (al-h?fira is a noun signifying the ‘first part’ of anything, from which is derived the expression raja‘a f? h?firatihi to mean that so and so ‘returned whence he had come’). | | 79:11 | Transliteration A-itha kunna AAithamannakhira Sahih International Even if we should be decayed bones? Muhsin Khan "Even after we are crumbled bones?" Yusuf Ali "What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?" Dr. Ghali Even when we are decayed bones?" Tafsir al-Jalalayn What! When we have been decayed bones?’ (nakhira: a variant reading has n?khira, ‘decayed and withered’), will we have life again? | | 79:12 | Transliteration Qaloo tilka ithan karratun khasira Sahih International They say, "That, then, would be a losing return." Muhsin Khan They say: "It would in that case, be a return with loss!" Yusuf Ali They say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!" Dr. Ghali They will say, "Lo, that then would be a losing recurrence!" Tafsir al-Jalalayn They will say, ‘That, return of ours to life, then, if it were true, would be a ruinous return!’. | | 79:13 | Transliteration Fa-innama hiya zajratun wahida Sahih International Indeed, it will be but one shout, Muhsin Khan But only, it will be a single Zajrah [shout (i.e., the second blowing of the Trumpet)]. (See Verse 37:19). Yusuf Ali But verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry, Dr. Ghali Yet, surely it shall be only one scaring (Cry), Tafsir al-Jalalayn God, exalted be He, says: But it, the Aftershock, which will be followed by the Resurrection, will be only a single blast, and so when it is blasted: | | 79:14 | Transliteration Fa-itha hum bissahira Sahih International And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface. Muhsin Khan When, behold, they find themselves over the earth alive after their death, Yusuf Ali When, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment). Dr. Ghali Then, only then, are they wakeful (for Judgment) (i.e. for Hell or watchful place). Tafsir al-Jalalayn behold, then, they, all creatures, will be upon the surface of the earth, alive, after having been dead inside it. | | 79:15 | Transliteration Hal ataka hadeethu moosa Sahih International Has there reached you the story of Moses? - Muhsin Khan Has there come to you the story of Musa (Moses)? Yusuf Ali Has the story of Moses reached thee? Dr. Ghali Has there come up to you the discourse of Musu (Moses). Tafsir al-Jalalayn Have you, O Muhammad (s), received the story of Moses (had?thu M?s? operates [the clause that follows]), | | 79:16 | Transliteration Ith nadahu rabbuhu bilwadialmuqaddasi tuwa Sahih International When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa, Muhsin Khan When his Lord called him in the sacred valley of Tuwa, Yusuf Ali Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa:- Dr. Ghali As his Lord called out to him in the supremely holy valley, Tuwa: Tafsir al-Jalalayn when his Lord called out to him in the holy valley of Tuw?? — this is the name of the valley (it may be read with nunation, Tuwan, or without) — and He said: | | 79:17 | Transliteration Ithhab ila firAAawna innahu tagha Sahih International "Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed. Muhsin Khan Go to Fir'aun (Pharaoh), verily, he has transgressed all bounds (in crimes, sins, polytheism, disbelief, etc.). Yusuf Ali "Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds: Dr. Ghali "Go to Firaawn; (Pharaoh) surely he has grown tyrannical (Or: inordinate). Tafsir al-Jalalayn ‘Go to Pharaoh; he has indeed become rebellious, he has exceeded [all] bounds with his disbelief, | | 79:18 | Transliteration Faqul hal laka ila an tazakka Sahih International And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself Muhsin Khan And say to him: "Would you purify yourself (from the sin of disbelief by becoming a believer)", Yusuf Ali "And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)?- Dr. Ghali So say (to him), ‘Would you (be ready) to cleanse yourself, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and say, “Would you — I call you [to] — purify yourself (tazakk?: a variant reading has tazzakk?, where the original second t?’ [of tatazakk?] has been assimilated with the z?y), to purge yourself of idolatry, by bearing witness that there is no god but God, | | 79:19 | Transliteration Waahdiyaka ila rabbika fatakhsha Sahih International And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'" Muhsin Khan And that I guide you to your Lord, so you should fear Him? Yusuf Ali "'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'" Dr. Ghali And that I should guide you to your Lord, then you will be apprehensive of (Him)?"' Tafsir al-Jalalayn and allow me to guide you to your Lord, to show you how to know Him (ma‘rifa) by way of proofs, so that you may have fear [of Him]?” ’ | | 79:20 | Transliteration Faarahu al-ayata alkubra Sahih International And he showed him the greatest sign, Muhsin Khan Then [Musa (Moses)] showed him the great sign (miracles). Yusuf Ali Then did (Moses) show him the Great Sign. Dr. Ghali So he (Moses) showed him (Pharaoh) the greatest sign, Tafsir al-Jalalayn So he showed him the greatest sign, from among His nine signs, namely, the [glowing] hand or the [slithering] staff. | | 79:21 | Transliteration Fakaththaba waAAasa Sahih International But Pharaoh denied and disobeyed. Muhsin Khan But [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] belied and disobeyed; Yusuf Ali But (Pharaoh) rejected it and disobeyed (guidance); Dr. Ghali Yet he (Pharaoh) cried lies and disobeyed, Tafsir al-Jalalayn But he, Pharaoh, denied, Moses, and disobeyed, God, exalted be He. | | 79:22 | Transliteration Thumma adbara yasAAa Sahih International Then he turned his back, striving. Muhsin Khan Then he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah). Yusuf Ali Further, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah). Dr. Ghali Thereafter he withdrew in a (hasty) endeavor. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Then he turned his back, to faith, going about in haste, throughout the land causing corruption. | | 79:23 | Transliteration Fahashara fanada Sahih International And he gathered [his people] and called out Muhsin Khan Then he gathered his people and cried aloud, Yusuf Ali Then he collected (his men) and made a proclamation, Dr. Ghali So he mustered and called out, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Then he gathered, he assembled the sorcerers and his armies, and proclaimed, | | 79:24 | Transliteration Faqala ana rabbukumu al-aAAla Sahih International And said, "I am your most exalted lord." Muhsin Khan Saying: "I am your lord, most high", Yusuf Ali Saying, "I am your Lord, Most High". Dr. Ghali Then he said, "I am your lord, most exalted!" Tafsir al-Jalalayn and said, ‘I am your most high lord!’, above whom is no other lord. | | 79:25 | Transliteration Faakhathahu Allahu nakalaal-akhirati wal-oola Sahih International So Allah seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression]. Muhsin Khan So Allah, seized him with punishment for his last [i.e. his saying: "I am your lord, most high") (see Verse 79:24)] and first [(i.e. his saying, "O chiefs! I know not that you have a god other than I" (see Verse 28:38)] transgression. Yusuf Ali But Allah did punish him, (and made an) example of him, - in the Hereafter, as in this life. Dr. Ghali Then Allah took him (away) with the torture of the Hereafter and the First (life). Tafsir al-Jalalayn So God seized him, He destroyed him by drowning him, as punishment for the latter, that is to say, these [last] words [of his], and for the former, that is to say, his saying previously, ‘I do not know of any god for you other than me’ [Q. 28:38] — and between the two [claims made by Pharaoh] was an interval of forty years. | | 79:26 | Transliteration Inna fee thalika laAAibratan limanyakhsha Sahih International Indeed in that is a warning for whoever would fear [ Allah ]. Muhsin Khan Verily, in this is an instructive admonition for whosoever fears Allah. Yusuf Ali Verily in this is an instructive warning for whosoever feareth (Allah). Dr. Ghali Surely in that is indeed a lesson for him who is apprehensive! Tafsir al-Jalalayn Assuredly in that, which is mentioned, there is a moral for him who fears, God, exalted be He. | | 79:27 | Transliteration Aantum ashaddu khalqan ami assamaobanaha Sahih International Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? Allah constructed it. Muhsin Khan Are you more difficult to create, or is the heaven that He constructed? Yusuf Ali What! Are ye the more difficult to create or the heaven (above)? (Allah) hath constructed it: Dr. Ghali Are you harder in creation than the heaven? He built it! Tafsir al-Jalalayn Are you (read a-antum pronouncing both hamzas, or by substituting an alif for the second one, not pronouncing it and inserting an alif between the one not pronounced and the former, or without [this insertion]), namely, [you] the deniers of the Resurrection, harder to create or the heaven which He has built?, harder to create (ban?h?: an explication of the manner of [its] creation). | | 79:28 | Transliteration RafaAAa samkaha fasawwaha Sahih International He raised its ceiling and proportioned it. Muhsin Khan He raised its height, and He has equally ordered it, Yusuf Ali On high hath He raised its canopy, and He hath given it order and perfection. Dr. Ghali He raised up its vault, then He molded it, Tafsir al-Jalalayn He made it rise high — an explication of the manner of [its] construction; in other words, He made its vertical extension high; it is also said that samkah? means ‘its ceiling’ — and levelled it: He made it even, flawless, | | 79:29 | Transliteration Waaghtasha laylaha waakhraja duhaha Sahih International And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness. Muhsin Khan Its night He covers with darkness, and its forenoon He brings out (with light). Yusuf Ali Its night doth He endow with darkness, and its splendour doth He bring out (with light). Dr. Ghali And He bedimmed its night and brought out its forenoon. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and darkened its night, and brought forth its day: He exposed the light of its sun (‘night’ has been annexed to it [the heaven] because it represents its shade, and likewise the ‘sun’, because it represents its light); | | 79:30 | Transliteration Wal-arda baAAda thalikadahaha Sahih International And after that He spread the earth. Muhsin Khan And after that He spread the earth; Yusuf Ali And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse); Dr. Ghali And the earth, after that He flattened it (for life). Tafsir al-Jalalayn and after that He spread out the earth: He made it flat, for it had been created before the heaven, but without having been spread out; | | 79:31 | Transliteration Akhraja minha maahawamarAAaha Sahih International He extracted from it its water and its pasture, Muhsin Khan And brought forth therefrom its water and its pasture; Yusuf Ali He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture; Dr. Ghali There from He brought out its water, and its pasture. Tafsir al-Jalalayn from it He has brought forth (akhraja: a circumstantial qualifier with a suppressed [preceding] qad, that is to say, mukhrijan, ‘bringing forth [from it]’) its waters, by making its springs gush forth, and its pastures, what cattle graze, of trees and herbage, and what humans consume of foods and fruits (the use of mar‘? to express this [of the earth] is figurative), | | 79:32 | Transliteration Waljibala arsaha Sahih International And the mountains He set firmly Muhsin Khan And the mountains He has fixed firmly; Yusuf Ali And the mountains hath He firmly fixed;- Dr. Ghali And the mountains He made steady, (i.e., made them anchorages). Tafsir al-Jalalayn and has set firm the mountains, on the face of the earth so that it stays still, | | 79:33 | Transliteration MataAAan lakum wali-anAAamikum Sahih International As provision for you and your grazing livestock. Muhsin Khan (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. Yusuf Ali For use and convenience to you and your cattle. Dr. Ghali An enjoyment for you and your cattle. Tafsir al-Jalalayn as a [source of] sustenance (an object denoting reason for an implied [verbal clause], in other words, fa‘ala dh?lika mut‘atan or tamt?‘an, ‘He did this to provide [a source of] sustenance’) for you and your flocks (an‘?m is the plural of na‘am, which are camels, cows and sheep). | | 79:34 | Transliteration Fa-itha jaati attammatualkubra Sahih International But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity - Muhsin Khan But when there comes the greatest catastrophe (i.e. the Day of Recompense, etc.), Yusuf Ali Therefore, when there comes the great, overwhelming (Event),- Dr. Ghali So when the Greatest Catastrophe comes, Tafsir al-Jalalayn So when the Greatest Catastrophe befalls — the second blast — | | 79:35 | Transliteration Yawma yatathakkaru al-insanu masaAAa Sahih International The Day when man will remember that for which he strove, Muhsin Khan The Day when man shall remember what he strove for, Yusuf Ali The Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for, Dr. Ghali On the Day when man will remind himself (of) whatever he has endeavored (to achieve), Tafsir al-Jalalayn the day when man will remember (yawma yatadhakkaru’l-ins?nu substitutes for idh?, ‘when’) his efforts, in the [life of the] world, in the way of good or evil, | | 79:36 | Transliteration Waburrizati aljaheemu liman yara Sahih International And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see - Muhsin Khan And Hell-fire shall be made apparent in full view for (every) one who sees, Yusuf Ali And Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see,- Dr. Ghali And Hell-Fire is brought forth for whoever sees, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and the Hell-fire, the consuming Fire, is revealed for all to see, for every on-looker (the response to idh?, ‘when’, is [what follows]): | | 79:37 | Transliteration Faamma man tagha Sahih International So as for he who transgressed Muhsin Khan Then, for him who Tagha (transgressed all bounds, in disbelief, oppression and evil deeds of disobedience to Allah). Yusuf Ali Then, for such as had transgressed all bounds, Dr. Ghali Then, as for him who was inordinate. Tafsir al-Jalalayn as for him who was rebellious, [who] disbelieved, | | 79:38 | Transliteration Waathara alhayata addunya Sahih International And preferred the life of the world, Muhsin Khan And preferred the life of this world (by following his evil desires and lusts), Yusuf Ali And had preferred the life of this world, Dr. Ghali And preferred the present life, (Literally: lowly life, i.e., the life of this world). Tafsir al-Jalalayn and preferred the life of this world, by pursuing [carnal] desires, | | 79:39 | Transliteration Fa-inna aljaheema hiya alma/wa Sahih International Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge. Muhsin Khan Verily, his abode will be Hell-fire; Yusuf Ali The Abode will be Hell-Fire; Dr. Ghali Then surely Hell-Fire will be the (only) abode. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Hell-fire will indeed be the abode, his abode. | | 79:40 | Transliteration Waama man khafa maqamarabbihi wanaha annafsa AAani alhawa Sahih International But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, Muhsin Khan But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts. Yusuf Ali And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires, Dr. Ghali And as for him who feared the station of his Lord (i.e., punishment from his lord) and forbade the self (its) prejudices, Tafsir al-Jalalayn But as for him who feared the stance before his Lord, his standing before Him, and forbade the, evil-bidding, soul from [pursuing] desire, that leads to perdition as a result of [that person’s] lusting after [carnal] desires, | | 79:41 | Transliteration Fa-inna aljannata hiya alma/wa Sahih International Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge. Muhsin Khan Verily, Paradise will be his abode. Yusuf Ali Their abode will be the Garden. Dr. Ghali Then surely the Garden will be the (only) abode. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Paradise will indeed be the abode: in sum the response [to idh?, ‘when’, verse 34] is that the disobedient one will be in the Fire and the obedient one in Paradise. | | 79:42 | Transliteration Yas-aloonaka AAani assaAAatiayyana mursaha Sahih International They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival? Muhsin Khan They ask you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) about the Hour, - when will be its appointed time? Yusuf Ali They ask thee about the Hour,-'When will be its appointed time? Dr. Ghali They ask you about the Hour: when will it have its berthing? (Literally: anchorage; i.e., when will it be). Tafsir al-Jalalayn They, that is, the disbelievers of Mecca, will ask you about the Hour: when will it set in?, when will it come to pass and when will it begin? | | 79:43 | Transliteration Feema anta min thikraha Sahih International In what [position] are you that you should mention it? Muhsin Khan You have no knowledge to say anything about it, Yusuf Ali Wherein art thou (concerned) with the declaration thereof? Dr. Ghali Wherein are you (concerned) with the Reminding of it? Tafsir al-Jalalayn What have you to do with the mention of it?, in other words, you have no knowledge of it in order to mention it. | | 79:44 | Transliteration Ila rabbika muntahaha Sahih International To your Lord is its finality. Muhsin Khan To your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof? Yusuf Ali With thy Lord in the Limit fixed therefor. Dr. Ghali To your Lord is the ultimate (knowledge) of it. Tafsir al-Jalalayn With your Lord it belongs ultimately, ultimate knowledge of it [lies with Him]; none other than Him has any knowledge of it. | | 79:45 | Transliteration Innama anta munthiru manyakhshaha Sahih International You are only a warner for those who fear it. Muhsin Khan You (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) are only a warner for those who fear it, Yusuf Ali Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it. Dr. Ghali Surely you are only the warner of him who is apprehensive of it. Tafsir al-Jalalayn You are only a warner for, your warning will only benefit, the one who fears it. | | 79:46 | Transliteration Kaannahum yawma yarawnaha lamyalbathoo illa AAashiyyatan aw duhaha Sahih International It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof. Muhsin Khan The Day they see it, (it will be) as if they had not tarried (in this world) except an afternoon or a morning. Yusuf Ali The Day they see it, (It will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn! Dr. Ghali It will be as if, on the Day they see it, they have not lingered except for a nightfall or its forenoon. Tafsir al-Jalalayn The day they see it, it will be as if they had only tarried, in their graves, for an evening or the morning thereof, that is to say, [as if only] one evening of a day or its morning (the annexation of duh?, ‘morning’, to ‘ashiyya, ‘evening’, is valid, on the basis of their contiguity, since both constitute either side of the day; the annexation has also allowed for the word to fall in harmony with the end-rhyme of the verses). |
