Yusuf Ali When the Sky is cleft asunder; Dr. Ghali When the heaven will be rent asunder, Tafsir al-Jalalayn When the heaven is split open, [when it is] rent asunder, | | 82:2 | Transliteration Wa-itha alkawakibu intatharat Sahih International And when the stars fall, scattering, Muhsin Khan And when the stars have fallen and scattered; Yusuf Ali When the Stars are scattered; Dr. Ghali And when the planets will be strewn, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and when the stars are dispersed, [when] they expire and begin to fall, | | 82:3 | Transliteration Wa-itha albiharu fujjirat Sahih International And when the seas are erupted Muhsin Khan And when the seas are burst forth (got dried up); Yusuf Ali When the Oceans are suffered to burst forth; Dr. Ghali And when the seas will be made to gush forth, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and when the seas are burst forth, released one upon the other, forming one mass of water, so that the sweet [water] mixes with the salty; | | 82:4 | Transliteration Wa-itha alqubooru buAAthirat Sahih International And when the [contents of] graves are scattered, Muhsin Khan And when the graves are turned upside down (and they bring out their contents) Yusuf Ali And when the Graves are turned upside down;- Dr. Ghali And when the tombs will be scattered away- Tafsir al-Jalalayn and when the tombs are overturned, [when] their earth [above them] is dug up and its dead are raised (the response to idh?, ‘when’, and all that is supplemented thereto is [the following]): | | 82:5 | Transliteration AAalimat nafsun ma qaddamatwaakhkharat Sahih International A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back. Muhsin Khan (Then) a person will know what he has sent forward and (what he has) left behind (of good or bad deeds). Yusuf Ali (Then) shall each soul know what it hath sent forward and (what it hath) kept back. Dr. Ghali A self will know whatever it has forwarded and deferred. Tafsir al-Jalalayn a soul, every soul, will know, at the time of the [occurrence of the] things mentioned, which is the Day of Resurrection, what it has sent ahead, in the way of deeds, and, what [it has], left behind, of these and did not do. | | 82:6 | Transliteration Ya ayyuha al-insanu magharraka birabbika alkareem Sahih International O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, Muhsin Khan O man! What has made you careless concerning your Lord, the Most Generous? Yusuf Ali O man! What has seduced thee from thy Lord Most Beneficent?- Dr. Ghali O you man! What has deluded you concerning your Ever-Honorable Lord, Tafsir al-Jalalayn O, disbelieving, man! What has deceived you with regard to your generous Lord?, so that you have disobeyed Him, | | 82:7 | Transliteration Allathee khalaqaka fasawwakafaAAadalak Sahih International Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you? Muhsin Khan Who created you, fashioned you perfectly, and gave you due proportion; Yusuf Ali Him Who created thee. Fashioned thee in due proportion, and gave thee a just bias; Dr. Ghali Who created you, then molded you, then proportioned you? Tafsir al-Jalalayn Who created you, when you were not, then made you upright, in your created form, with sound limbs, then proportioned you (read fa-‘adalak or fa-‘addalak), making you symmetrical in shape, with well-proportioned parts, so that no hand or leg is longer than the other, | | 82:8 | Transliteration Fee ayyi sooratin ma shaarakkabak Sahih International In whatever form He willed has He assembled you. Muhsin Khan In whatever form He willed, He put you together. Yusuf Ali In whatever Form He wills, does He put thee together. Dr. Ghali In whichever fashion He (so) decides, He compounds you. Tafsir al-Jalalayn assembling you in whatever (m? is a relative) form He will? | | 82:9 | Transliteration Kalla bal tukaththiboona biddeen Sahih International No! But you deny the Recompense. Muhsin Khan Nay! But you deny the Recompense (reward for good deeds and punishment for evil deeds). Yusuf Ali Nay! But ye do reject Right and Judgment! Dr. Ghali Not at all! No indeed, (but) you cry lies to the Doom. Tafsir al-Jalalayn No indeed! — a deterrent against letting oneself be misled by the generosity of God, exalted be He. Rather you, that is, disbelievers of Mecca, deny Judgement, requital for deeds; | | 82:10 | Transliteration Wa-inna AAalaykum lahafitheen Sahih International And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers, Muhsin Khan But verily, over you (are appointed angels in charge of mankind) to watch you. Yusuf Ali But verily over you (are appointed angels) to protect you,- Dr. Ghali And surely there are indeed over you Preservers, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Yet lo! there are above you watchers, from among the angels, over your deeds, | | 82:11 | Transliteration Kiraman katibeen Sahih International Noble and recording; Muhsin Khan Kiraman (honourable) Katibin writing down (your deeds). Yusuf Ali Kind and honourable,- Writing down (your deeds): Dr. Ghali Honorable Writers, Tafsir al-Jalalayn noble, in God’s sight, writers, of these [deeds], | | 82:12 | Transliteration YaAAlamoona ma tafAAaloon Sahih International They know whatever you do. Muhsin Khan They know all that you do. Yusuf Ali They know (and understand) all that ye do. Dr. Ghali (Who) know whatever you perform. Tafsir al-Jalalayn who know whatever you do, all of it. | | 82:13 | Transliteration Inna al-abrara lafee naAAeem Sahih International Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure, Muhsin Khan Verily, the Abrar (pious and righteous) will be in delight (Paradise); Yusuf Ali As for the Righteous, they will be in bliss; Dr. Ghali Surely the constantly benign will indeed be in Bliss, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Indeed the pious, the believers who are sincere in their faith, shall be amid bliss, [in] Paradise, | | 82:14 | Transliteration Wa-inna alfujjara lafee jaheem Sahih International And indeed, the wicked will be in Hellfire. Muhsin Khan And verily, the Fujjar (the wicked, disbelievers, sinners and evil-doers) will be in the blazing Fire (Hell), Yusuf Ali And the Wicked - they will be in the Fire, Dr. Ghali And surely the constantly impious will indeed be in Hell-Fire, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and indeed the profligates, the disbelievers, shall be in Hell-fire, a scorching fire, | | 82:15 | Transliteration Yaslawnaha yawma addeen Sahih International They will [enter to] burn therein on the Day of Recompense, Muhsin Khan In which they will enter, and taste its burning flame on the Day of Recompense, Yusuf Ali Which they will enter on the Day of Judgment, Dr. Ghali Roasting therein on the Day of Doom. Tafsir al-Jalalayn entering it, to suffer its heat, on the Day of Judgement, [the Day of] Requital, | | 82:16 | Transliteration Wama hum AAanha bigha-ibeen Sahih International And never therefrom will they be absent. Muhsin Khan And they (Al-Fujjar) will not be absent therefrom (i.e. will not go out from the Hell). Yusuf Ali And they will not be able to keep away therefrom. Dr. Ghali And in no way will they be absent from it. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and they shall not be absent from it, [they shall not] be taken out of it. | | 82:17 | Transliteration Wama adraka ma yawmu addeeni Sahih International And what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense? Muhsin Khan And what will make you know what the Day of Recompense is? Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is? Dr. Ghali And what makes you realize what the Day of Doom is? Tafsir al-Jalalayn And what would show you, [what would] inform you, what the Day of Judgement is? | | 82:18 | Transliteration Thumma ma adraka mayawmu addeen Sahih International Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense? Muhsin Khan Again, what will make you know what the Day of Recompense is? Yusuf Ali Again, what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is? Dr. Ghali Again, (Literally: Thereafter) what makes you realize what the Day of Doom is? Tafsir al-Jalalayn Again, what would show you what the Day of Judgement is? — [repeated] to emphasise its enormity. | | 82:19 | Transliteration Yawma la tamliku nafsun linafsinshay-an wal-amru yawma-ithin lillah Sahih International It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing; and the command, that Day, is [entirely] with Allah . Muhsin Khan (It will be) the Day when no person shall have power (to do) anything for another, and the Decision, that Day, will be (wholly) with Allah. Yusuf Ali (It will be) the Day when no soul shall have power (to do) aught for another: For the command, that Day, will be (wholly) with Allah. Dr. Ghali A Day when no self will possess anything (to help) another self; and the Command upon that Day belongs to Allah. Tafsir al-Jalalayn [It is] a day (read yawmu) when no soul will be of any avail, any use, to another soul, and the [absolute] command on that day will be God’s: there will be no [power of] command for anyone other than Him thereat, in other words, none has been given the power to mediate thereupon, in contrast to [situations] in this world. |
