| 83:1 | Transliteration Waylun lilmutaffifeen Sahih International Woe to those who give less [than due], Muhsin Khan Woe to Al-Mutaffifin [those who give less in measure and weight (decrease the rights of others)], Yusuf Ali Woe to those that deal in fraud,- Dr. Ghali Woe to the stinters. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Woe (waylun: a term entailing chastisement; or [it is the name of] a valley in Hell) to the defrauders: | | 83:2 | Transliteration Allatheena itha iktalooAAala annasi yastawfoon Sahih International Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. Muhsin Khan Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure, Yusuf Ali Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, exact full measure, Dr. Ghali Who, when they measure against mankind, (i.e., when they take from others) take full (measure), Tafsir al-Jalalayn those who, when they take measure from people, demand [it] in full, the measure; | | 83:3 | Transliteration Wa-itha kaloohum aw wazanoohumyukhsiroon Sahih International But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss. Muhsin Khan And when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due. Yusuf Ali But when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due. Dr. Ghali And when they measure for them or weigh for them, (i.e., when they give to others) they cause them loss. Tafsir al-Jalalayn but [who] when they measure for them or weigh for them, they cause [them] loss, they diminish [for them] the measure or the weight. | | 83:4 | Transliteration Ala yathunnu ola-ikaannahum mabAAoothoon Sahih International Do they not think that they will be resurrected Muhsin Khan Think they not that they will be resurrected (for reckoning), Yusuf Ali Do they not think that they will be called to account?- Dr. Ghali Do those not expect that they will be made to rise again. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Do such [individuals] not know for certain (al? indicates an interrogative of rebuke) that they will be resurrected | | 83:5 | Transliteration Liyawmin AAatheem Sahih International For a tremendous Day - Muhsin Khan On a Great Day, Yusuf Ali On a Mighty Day, Dr. Ghali To a tremendous Day, Tafsir al-Jalalayn for an awful day, that is to say, on it, and this is the Day of Resurrection, | | 83:6 | Transliteration Yawma yaqoomu annasu lirabbialAAalameen Sahih International The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds? Muhsin Khan The Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)? Yusuf Ali A Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the Worlds? Dr. Ghali The Day when mankind will rise up before The Lord of the worlds? Tafsir al-Jalalayn a day when (yawma is a substitution for the [syntactical] locus of li-yawmin, ‘to an [awful] day’, and as such is in the accusative because of [the verb] mab‘?th?na, ‘will be resurrected’) mankind will rise, from their graves, before the Lord of the Worlds?, [the Lord of] all creatures, for His affair, His reckoning and His requital. | | 83:7 | Transliteration Kalla inna kitaba alfujjarilafee sijjeen Sahih International No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen. Muhsin Khan Nay! Truly, the Record (writing of the deeds) of the Fujjar (disbelievers, sinners, evil-doers and wicked) is (preserved) in Sijjin. Yusuf Ali Nay! Surely the record of the wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin. Dr. Ghali Not at all! Surely the Book of the constantly impious is indeed in Sijjin. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Nay!, verily, the record of the profligates, that is to say, the record of the deeds of the disbelievers, is in Sijj?n — this is said to be a book containing [the record of] all the deeds of the devils and the disbelievers; but it is also said to be a location in the lowermost part of the seventh earth, the place of Satan and his hosts. | | 83:8 | Transliteration Wama adraka ma sijjeen Sahih International And what can make you know what is sijjeen? Muhsin Khan And what will make you know what Sijjin is? Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what Sijjin is? Dr. Ghali And what makes you realize what Sijjin is? Tafsir al-Jalalayn And what would tell you what Sijj?n is?, what the book of Sijj?n is. | | 83:9 | Transliteration Kitabun marqoom Sahih International It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed. Muhsin Khan A Register inscribed. Yusuf Ali (There is) a Register (fully) inscribed. Dr. Ghali (It is) a Book imprinted. Tafsir al-Jalalayn [It is] a sealed book. | | 83:10 | Transliteration Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeen Sahih International Woe, that Day, to the deniers, Muhsin Khan Woe, that Day, to those who deny [(Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Resurrection, and Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments)]. Yusuf Ali Woe, that Day, to those that deny- Dr. Ghali Woe upon that Day to the beliers. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Woe to the deniers on that day, | | 83:11 | Transliteration Allatheena yukaththiboonabiyawmi addeen Sahih International Who deny the Day of Recompense. Muhsin Khan Those who deny the Day of Recompense. Yusuf Ali Those that deny the Day of Judgment. Dr. Ghali Who cry lies to the Day of Doom. Tafsir al-Jalalayn who deny the Day of Judgement, [the Day of] Requital (alladh?na yukadhdhib?na bi-yawmi’l-d?n: either a substitution for or an explication of al-mukadhdhib?na, ‘the deniers’); | | 83:12 | Transliteration Wama yukaththibu bihi illakullu muAAtadin atheem Sahih International And none deny it except every sinful transgressor. Muhsin Khan And none can deny it except every transgressor beyond bounds, (in disbelief, oppression and disobedience of Allah, the sinner!) Yusuf Ali And none can deny it but the Transgressor beyond bounds the Sinner! Dr. Ghali And in no way does anyone cry lies to it except every constantly vicious transgressor. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and none deny it but every sinful (the form [ath?m] is hyperbolic) transgressor, overstepping the bounds. | | 83:13 | Transliteration Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatunaqala asateeru al-awwaleen Sahih International When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." Muhsin Khan When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him he says: "Tales of the ancients!" Yusuf Ali When Our Signs are rehearsed to him, he says, "Tales of the ancients!" Dr. Ghali When Our ayat (Verses, signs) are recited to him, he says, "Myths of the earliest (people)!" Tafsir al-Jalalayn When Our signs, [of] the Qur’?n, are recited to him, he says, ‘[Mere] fables (as?t?r) of the ancients!’, [mere] tales that were written down (sutirat) in ancient times (as?t?r is the plural of ust?ra or ist?ra). | | 83:14 | Transliteration Kalla bal rana AAalaquloobihim ma kanoo yaksiboon Sahih International No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning. Muhsin Khan Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn. Yusuf Ali By no means! but on their hearts is the stain of the (ill) which they do! Dr. Ghali Not at all! No indeed, (but) whatever they were earning has overlaid on their hearts. Tafsir al-Jalalayn No indeed! — a deterrent and a warning against saying such [things]. Rather there has slayed, engulfed, their hearts, covering them like rust that which they earned, of acts of disobedience. | | 83:15 | Transliteration Kalla innahum AAan rabbihim yawma-ithinlamahjooboon Sahih International No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned. Muhsin Khan Nay! Surely, they (evil-doers) will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day. Yusuf Ali Verily, from (the Light of) their Lord, that Day, will they be veiled. Dr. Ghali Not at all! Surely upon that Day they will indeed be curtained from their Lord; Tafsir al-Jalalayn Nay!, verily, they, on that day, the Day of Resurrection, will be screened off from their Lord, and so they will not see Him. | | 83:16 | Transliteration Thumma innahum lasaloo aljaheem Sahih International Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire. Muhsin Khan Then, verily they will indeed enter and taste the burning flame of Hell. Yusuf Ali Further, they will enter the Fire of Hell. Dr. Ghali Thereafter surely they will indeed be roasting in Hell-Fire. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Then they will be exposed to Hell-fire, [then] they will enter the scorching Fire; | | 83:17 | Transliteration Thumma yuqalu hatha allatheekuntum bihi tukaththiboon Sahih International Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny." Muhsin Khan Then, it will be said to them: "This is what you used to deny!" Yusuf Ali Further, it will be said to them: "This is the (reality) which ye rejected as false! Dr. Ghali Thereafter it will be said (to them), "This is what you cried lies to." Tafsir al-Jalalayn then it will be said, to them: ‘This, that is, the chastisement, is that which you used to deny!’ | | 83:18 | Transliteration Kalla inna kitaba al-abrarilafee AAilliyyeen Sahih International No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in 'illiyyun. Muhsin Khan Nay! Verily, the Record (writing of the deeds) of Al-Abrar (the pious who fear Allah and avoid evil), is (preserved) in 'Illiyyun. Yusuf Ali Day, verily the record of the Righteous is (preserved) in 'Illiyin. Dr. Ghali Not at all! Surely the Book of the constantly-benign is indeed in cIlliyyin (i.e., the most exalted places) Tafsir al-Jalalayn Nay!, verily, the record of the pious, that is, the record of the deeds of the believers who were sincere in their faith, is in ‘Illiyy?n — this is said to be the book [containing] all the good deeds of the angels and the believers from among the two heavy ones [sc. mankind and jinn]; but it is also said to be a place below the Throne in the seventh heaven; | | 83:19 | Transliteration Wama adraka maAAilliyyoon Sahih International And what can make you know what is 'illiyyun? Muhsin Khan And what will make you know what 'Illiyyun is? Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what 'Illiyun is? Dr. Ghali And what makes you realize what cIlliyyin is? Tafsir al-Jalalayn and what will tell you, [what will] inform you, what ‘Illiyy?n is?, what the book of ‘Illiyy?n is. | | 83:20 | Transliteration Kitabun marqoom Sahih International It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed Muhsin Khan A Register inscribed. Yusuf Ali (There is) a Register (fully) inscribed, Dr. Ghali (It is) a Book imprinted, Tafsir al-Jalalayn [It is] a sealed book, | | 83:21 | Transliteration Yashhaduhu almuqarraboon Sahih International Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allah ]. Muhsin Khan To which bear witness those nearest (to Allah, i.e. the angels). Yusuf Ali To which bear witness those Nearest (to Allah). Dr. Ghali The near-stationed (i.e., the Angels stationed near to Allah) witness it. Tafsir al-Jalalayn witnessed by those brought near, from among the angels. | | 83:22 | Transliteration Inna al-abrara lafee naAAeem Sahih International Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure Muhsin Khan Verily, Al-Abrar (the pious who fear Allah and avoid evil) will be in delight (Paradise). Yusuf Ali Truly the Righteous will be in Bliss: Dr. Ghali Surely the constantly-benign will indeed be in Bliss, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Assuredly the pious will be amid bliss, [in] Paradise, | | 83:23 | Transliteration AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroon Sahih International On adorned couches, observing. Muhsin Khan On thrones, looking (at all things). Yusuf Ali On Thrones (of Dignity) will they command a sight (of all things): Dr. Ghali On couches looking (about). Tafsir al-Jalalayn upon couches, [upon] beds beneath canopies, gazing, at the bliss which they have been given. | | 83:24 | Transliteration TaAArifu fee wujoohihim nadrata annaAAeem Sahih International You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure. Muhsin Khan You will recognise in their faces the brightness of delight. Yusuf Ali Thou wilt recognise in their faces the beaming brightness of Bliss. Dr. Ghali You recognize in their faces the bloom of Bliss. Tafsir al-Jalalayn You will perceive in their faces the radiancy of bliss, the splendour and beauty of blissfulness, | | 83:25 | Transliteration Yusqawna min raheeqin makhtoom Sahih International They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed. Muhsin Khan They will be given to drink pure sealed wine. Yusuf Ali Their thirst will be slaked with Pure Wine sealed: Dr. Ghali They will be given to drink of sealed nectar. Tafsir al-Jalalayn as they are given to drink a nectar, a wine free of any impurities, [that is] sealed, in its vessel, none other than them breaking its seal, | | 83:26 | Transliteration Khitamuhu miskun wafee thalikafalyatanafasi almutanafisoon Sahih International The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete. Muhsin Khan The last thereof (that wine) will be the smell of musk, and for this let (all) those strive who want to strive (i.e. hasten earnestly to the obedience of Allah). Yusuf Ali The seal thereof will be Musk: And for this let those aspire, who have aspirations: Dr. Ghali Whose sealing is musk; for this then let the competitors compete- Tafsir al-Jalalayn whose seal is musk, that is, whose final sip is followed by an emanating scent of musk — so for such [bliss] let the viers vie, let them desire to apply themselves to obedience of God — | | 83:27 | Transliteration Wamizajuhu min tasneem Sahih International And its mixture is of Tasneem, Muhsin Khan It (that wine) will be mixed with Tasnim. Yusuf Ali With it will be (given) a mixture of Tasnim: Dr. Ghali And whose blend is of Tasnim, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and whose mixture, that is to say, that with which it is mixed, is of Tasn?m, which is explained by His [following] words: | | 83:28 | Transliteration AAaynan yashrabu biha almuqarraboon Sahih International A spring from which those near [to Allah ] drink. Muhsin Khan A spring whereof drink those nearest to Allah. Yusuf Ali A spring, from (the waters) whereof drink those Nearest to Allah. Dr. Ghali A spring at which drink the near-stationed (i.e., the Angles stationed near Allah). Tafsir al-Jalalayn a spring (‘aynan is in the accusative because of an implicit [prefatory] amdahu, ‘I extol [this spring]’) from which those brought near will drink (yashrabu bih?: [should be yashrabu] minh?, or [it may be that bih? is used because] yashrabu is meant to imply the sense of yaltadhdhu [bih?, ‘in which they delight’]). | | 83:29 | Transliteration Inna allatheena ajramoo kanoomina allatheena amanoo yadhakoon Sahih International Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed. Muhsin Khan Verily! (During the worldly life) those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed. Yusuf Ali Those in sin used to laugh at those who believed, Dr. Ghali Surely the ones who are (guilty of) crimes used to laugh at the ones who believed, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Verily the guilty, like Ab? Jahl and his ilk, used to laugh at the believers, such as ‘Amm?r [b. Y?sir] and Bil?l [the Ethiopian] and those like them, in mockery of them; | | 83:30 | Transliteration Wa-itha marroo bihim yataghamazoon Sahih International And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances. Muhsin Khan And whenever they passed by them, used to wink one to another (in mockery); Yusuf Ali And whenever they passed by them, used to wink at each other (in mockery); Dr. Ghali And when they passed by them (they used) to wink one to another. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and when they, the believers, passed them by, they would wink at one another, the guilty beckoned with their eyebrows and eyelids towards the believers in mockery; | | 83:31 | Transliteration Wa-itha inqalaboo ila ahlihimuinqalaboo fakiheen Sahih International And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting. Muhsin Khan And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting; Yusuf Ali And when they returned to their own people, they would return jesting; Dr. Ghali And when they turned over (to their families), they turned over jesting, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and when they returned to their folks they would return blithely (f?kih?na: a variant reading has fakih?na), rejoicing in their [disparaging] mention of the believers; | | 83:32 | Transliteration Wa-itha raawhum qaloo inna haola-iladalloon Sahih International And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost." Muhsin Khan And when they saw them, they said: "Verily! These have indeed gone astray!" Yusuf Ali And whenever they saw them, they would say, "Behold! These are the people truly astray!" Dr. Ghali And when they saw them, they said, "Surely these (people) are indeed erring." Tafsir al-Jalalayn and when they see them, that is, the believers, they say, ‘Lo! these [men] are astray!’, on account of their belief in Muhammad (s). | | 83:33 | Transliteration Wama orsiloo AAalayhim hafitheen Sahih International But they had not been sent as guardians over them. Muhsin Khan But they (disbelievers, sinners) had not been sent as watchers over them (the believers). Yusuf Ali But they had not been sent as keepers over them! Dr. Ghali And in no way were they sent preservers over them. Tafsir al-Jalalayn God, exalted be He, says: Yet they, that is, the disbelievers, were not sent as watchers over them, [over] the believers, to preserve them or [to keep a record of] their deeds and thus guide them back to what is best for them. | | 83:34 | Transliteration Falyawma allatheena amanoomina alkuffari yadhakoon Sahih International So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers, Muhsin Khan But this Day (the Day of Resurrection) those who believe will laugh at the disbelievers Yusuf Ali But on this Day the Believers will laugh at the Unbelievers: Dr. Ghali So Today the ones who believed are laughing at the steadfast disbelievers, Tafsir al-Jalalayn So today, that is, the Day of Resurrection, the believers will be laughing at the disbelievers, | | 83:35 | Transliteration AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroon Sahih International On adorned couches, observing. Muhsin Khan On (high) thrones, looking (at all things). Yusuf Ali On Thrones (of Dignity) they will command (a sight) (of all things). Dr. Ghali On couches, looking (down upon them). Tafsir al-Jalalayn upon couches, in Paradise, gazing, out from their dwellings at the disbelievers while they are being tortured; and they will laugh at them just as they, the disbelievers, had laughed at them in the world. | | 83:36 | Transliteration Hal thuwwiba alkuffaru ma kanooyafAAaloon Sahih International Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do? Muhsin Khan Are not the disbelievers paid (fully) for what they used to do? Yusuf Ali Will not the Unbelievers have been paid back for what they did? Dr. Ghali Have the steadfast disbelievers been requited for what they were performing? Tafsir al-Jalalayn Have the disbelievers been requited for what they used to do? Yes, indeed! |
