| 87:1 | Transliteration Sabbihi isma rabbika al-aAAla Sahih International Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High, Muhsin Khan Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High, Yusuf Ali Glorify the name of thy Guardian-Lord Most High, Dr. Ghali Extol The Name of your Lord, The Most Exalted, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Glorify the Name of your Lord, that is, exalt your Lord above what does not befit Him (ism [in isma rabbika, ‘the Name of your Lord’] is extra), the Most High (an adjective qualifying rabbika, ‘your Lord’), | | 87:2 | Transliteration Allathee khalaqa fasawwa Sahih International Who created and proportioned Muhsin Khan Who has created (everything), and then proportioned it; Yusuf Ali Who hath created, and further, given order and proportion; Dr. Ghali Who created; so He molded; Tafsir al-Jalalayn Who created and proportioned, His creature, making it of well-proportioned parts, without irregularities, | | 87:3 | Transliteration Wallathee qaddara fahada Sahih International And who destined and [then] guided Muhsin Khan And Who has measured (preordainments for each and everything even to be blessed or wretched); then guided (i.e. showed mankind the right as well as wrong paths, and guided the animals to pasture); Yusuf Ali Who hath ordained laws. And granted guidance; Dr. Ghali And Who determined; so He guided; Tafsir al-Jalalayn and Who determined, what He wants, and guided, to what He had determined of good or evil, | | 87:4 | Transliteration Wallathee akhraja almarAAa Sahih International And who brings out the pasture Muhsin Khan And Who brings out the pasturage, Yusuf Ali And Who bringeth out the (green and luscious) pasture, Dr. Ghali And Who brought out the pasturage, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and Who brought forth the pasture, [Who] caused herbage to grow, | | 87:5 | Transliteration FajaAAalahu ghuthaan ahwa Sahih International And [then] makes it black stubble. Muhsin Khan And then makes it dark stubble. Yusuf Ali And then doth make it (but) swarthy stubble. Dr. Ghali Then He made it a dark (Or: stubble including all pasturage) stubble. Tafsir al-Jalalayn then made it, after verdancy, blackened stubble, desiccated broken chaff. | | 87:6 | Transliteration Sanuqri-oka fala tansa Sahih International We will make you recite, [O Muhammad], and you will not forget, Muhsin Khan We shall make you to recite (the Quran), so you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) shall not forget (it), Yusuf Ali By degrees shall We teach thee to declare (the Message), so thou shalt not forget, Dr. Ghali We will soon make you read so you will not forget, Tafsir al-Jalalayn We will have you recite, the Qur’?n, so that you will not forget, what you recite, | | 87:7 | Transliteration Illa ma shaa Allahuinnahu yaAAlamu aljahra wama yakhfa Sahih International Except what Allah should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden. Muhsin Khan Except what Allah, may will, He knows what is apparent and what is hidden. Yusuf Ali Except as Allah wills: For He knoweth what is manifest and what is hidden. Dr. Ghali Excepting whatever Allah decides; surely He knows audible speech and what is concealed. Tafsir al-Jalalayn except what God may will, that you forget, by abrogating its recitation and its ruling — the Prophet (s) used to recite aloud while Gabriel recited, fearing to forget, and so it is as though it was said to him, ‘Do not hasten in it; you will not forget and so do not weary yourself by reciting it aloud’; assuredly He, exalted be He, knows what is overt, of words and deeds, and what is hidden, of both of these. | | 87:8 | Transliteration Wanuyassiruka lilyusra Sahih International And We will ease you toward ease. Muhsin Khan And We shall make easy for you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) the easy way (i.e. the doing of righteous deeds). Yusuf Ali And We will make it easy for thee (to follow) the simple (Path). Dr. Ghali And We will ease you to the Easiest (way). Tafsir al-Jalalayn And We will ease your way to the easy way, the uncomplicated Law, namely, Islam. | | 87:9 | Transliteration Fathakkir in nafaAAati aththikra Sahih International So remind, if the reminder should benefit; Muhsin Khan Therefore remind (men) in case the reminder profits (them). Yusuf Ali Therefore give admonition in case the admonition profits (the hearer). Dr. Ghali So remind, in case the Reminding profits. Tafsir al-Jalalayn So remind, admonish by the Qur’?n, in case the reminder should be of benefit, to the one whom you might remind, the one mentioned in [the following verse] ‘he [who fears] will be reminded’, in other words, even if it might not be of benefit, for it is of benefit to some but of no benefit to others. | | 87:10 | Transliteration Sayaththakkaru man yakhsha Sahih International He who fears [ Allah ] will be reminded. Muhsin Khan The reminder will be received by him who fears (Allah), Yusuf Ali The admonition will be received by those who fear (Allah): Dr. Ghali He who is apprehensive will constantly remember, Tafsir al-Jalalayn He who fears, God, exalted be He, will be reminded, by it, as in the verse: So admonish by the Qur’?n him who fears My threat [Q. 50:45]; | | 87:11 | Transliteration Wayatajannabuha al-ashqa Sahih International But the wretched one will avoid it - Muhsin Khan But it will be avoided by the wretched, Yusuf Ali But it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones, Dr. Ghali And the most wretched will avoid it, Tafsir al-Jalalayn but the wretched one (al-ashq? means al-shaq?), that is to say, the disbeliever, will shun it, that is, the reminder, in other words, he will leave it aside, not looking at it, | | 87:12 | Transliteration Allathee yasla annaraalkubra Sahih International [He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire, Muhsin Khan Who will enter the great Fire and made to taste its burning, Yusuf Ali Who will enter the Great Fire, Dr. Ghali (He) who will roast in the Greatest Fire, Tafsir al-Jalalayn he who will be roasted in the greater Fire, the Fire of the Hereafter, the lesser fire being that of this world; | | 87:13 | Transliteration Thumma la yamootu feeha walayahya Sahih International Neither dying therein nor living. Muhsin Khan Wherein he will neither die (to be in rest) nor live (a good living). Yusuf Ali In which they will then neither die nor live. Dr. Ghali Thereafter he will neither die therein, nor live. Tafsir al-Jalalayn then he will neither die therein, and find rest, nor live, a enjoyable life. | | 87:14 | Transliteration Qad aflaha man tazakka Sahih International He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself Muhsin Khan Indeed whosoever purifies himself (by avoiding polytheism and accepting Islamic Monotheism) shall achieve success, Yusuf Ali But those will prosper who purify themselves, Dr. Ghali He has already prospered who has cleansed himself. Tafsir al-Jalalayn Successful, winner, indeed is he who purifies himself, [who] cleanses himself by means of [his adherence to] faith, | | 87:15 | Transliteration Wathakara isma rabbihi fasalla Sahih International And mentions the name of his Lord and prays. Muhsin Khan And remembers (glorifies) the Name of his Lord (worships none but Allah), and prays (five compulsory prayers and Nawafil additional prayers). Yusuf Ali And glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in prayer. Dr. Ghali And who remembers the Name of his Lord, so he prays. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and mentions the Name of his Lord, saying All?hu akbar, ‘God is Great’, and prays, the five prayers — and such are the concerns of [one working towards] the Hereafter, [concerns] which the Meccan disbelievers shun. | | 87:16 | Transliteration Bal tu/thiroona alhayata addunya Sahih International But you prefer the worldly life, Muhsin Khan Nay, you prefer the life of this world; Yusuf Ali Day (behold), ye prefer the life of this world; Dr. Ghali No indeed, (but) you prefer the present life, (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this world). Tafsir al-Jalalayn Nay, but you prefer (or read yu’thir?na, ‘they prefer’) the life of this world, to the Hereafter, | | 87:17 | Transliteration Wal-akhiratu khayrun waabqa Sahih International While the Hereafter is better and more enduring. Muhsin Khan Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting. Yusuf Ali But the Hereafter is better and more enduring. Dr. Ghali And the Hereafter is more charitable (i.e., better) and more enduring. Tafsir al-Jalalayn whereas the Hereafter, and the Paradise it entails, is better and more lasting. | | 87:18 | Transliteration Inna hatha lafee assuhufial-oola Sahih International Indeed, this is in the former scriptures, Muhsin Khan Verily! This is in the former Scriptures, Yusuf Ali And this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelation),- Dr. Ghali Surely this is in the earliest Scrolls, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Truly this, the success of those who purify themselves, and the Hereafter being better, is in the former scrolls, the ones revealed before the Qur’?n, | | 87:19 | Transliteration Suhufi ibraheema wamoosa Sahih International The scriptures of Abraham and Moses. Muhsin Khan The Scriptures of Ibrahim (Abraham) and Musa (Moses). Yusuf Ali The Books of Abraham and Moses. Dr. Ghali The Scrolls of Ibrahim and Musa (Abraham and Moses respectively). Tafsir al-Jalalayn the scrolls of Abraham and Moses, the ten scrolls of Abraham and the Torah of Moses. |
