91:1
Transliteration
Washshamsi waduhaha
Sahih International
By the sun and its brightness
Muhsin Khan
And by the sun and its brightness;
Yusuf Ali
By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour;
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the sun and its forenoon radiance,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
By the sun and her morning light,
91:2
91:2
Transliteration
Walqamari itha talaha
Sahih International
And [by] the moon when it follows it
Muhsin Khan
And by the moon as it follows it (the sun);
Yusuf Ali
By the Moon as she follows him;
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the moon when it ensues it.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and [by] the moon when it follows her, rising after she has set,
91:3
91:3
Transliteration
Wannahari itha jallaha
Sahih International
And [by] the day when it displays it
Muhsin Khan
And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness;
Yusuf Ali
By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory;
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the daytime when it manifests it,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and [by] the day when it reveals her, as it rises [high],
91:4
91:4
Transliteration
Wallayli itha yaghshaha
Sahih International
And [by] the night when it covers it
Muhsin Khan
And by the night as it conceals it (the sun);
Yusuf Ali
By the Night as it conceals it;
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the night when it envelops it,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and [by] the night when it enshrouds her, covering her up with its darkness (idh?, ‘when’, in all three instances is an absolute adverbial, operated by the verbal action of the oath).
91:5
91:5
Transliteration
Wassama-i wama banaha
Sahih International
And [by] the sky and He who constructed it
Muhsin Khan
And by the heaven and Him Who built it;
Yusuf Ali
By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure;
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the heaven and That (i.e., The Command) which built it,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
By the heaven and the One Who built it,
91:6
91:6
Transliteration
Wal-ardi wama tahaha
Sahih International
And [by] the earth and He who spread it
Muhsin Khan
And by the earth and Him Who spread it,
Yusuf Ali
By the Earth and its (wide) expanse:
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the earth and That (i.e., The Command) which spread it (even),
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and [by] the earth and the One Who spread it, laid out flat.
91:7
91:7
Transliteration
Wanafsin wama sawwaha
Sahih International
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
Muhsin Khan
And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion;
Yusuf Ali
By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it;
Dr. Ghali
And (by) the self and That (i.e., The Command) which molded it,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and [by] the soul, that is to say, [by] all souls, and the One Who proportioned it, in its created form (m? in all three instances relates to the verbal action, or functions as man, ‘the one who’),
91:8
91:8
Transliteration
Faalhamaha fujooraha wataqwaha
Sahih International
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
Muhsin Khan
Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;
Yusuf Ali
And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;-
Dr. Ghali
So He inspired it to its impiety and piety!
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and inspired to discern its vices and piety, He pointed out to it the path of good and that of evil (the placing of taqw?, ‘piety’, second takes into account the [rhyme] endings of the verses; the response to the oath is [the following:])
91:9
91:9
Transliteration
Qad aflaha man zakkaha
Sahih International
He has succeeded who purifies it,
Muhsin Khan
Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).
Yusuf Ali
Truly he succeeds that purifies it,
Dr. Ghali
He has already prospered who has cleansed it.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Successful indeed (qad: the l?m [of laqad, ‘indeed’] has been omitted from it for the sake of brevity) will be the one who purifies it, purges it of sins,
91:10
91:10
Transliteration
Waqad khaba man dassaha
Sahih International
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
Muhsin Khan
And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).
Yusuf Ali
And he fails that corrupts it!
Dr. Ghali
And he has already been disappointed who stunts it.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and he will indeed have failed he who eclipses it, he who obscures it with [acts of] disobedience (dass?h? is actually dassasah?, but the second s?n has been replaced with an alif for [phonetic] ease).
91:11
91:11
Transliteration
Kaththabat thamoodu bitaghwaha
Sahih International
Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
Muhsin Khan
Thamud (people) denied (their Prophet) through their transgression (by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism, and by following polytheism, and by committing every kind of sin).
Yusuf Ali
The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing,
Dr. Ghali
Thamud cried lies in their in ordinance,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Tham?d denied, their messenger S?lih, because of their rebellious nature,
91:12
91:12
Transliteration
Ithi inbaAAatha ashqaha
Sahih International
When the most wretched of them was sent forth.
Muhsin Khan
When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel).
Yusuf Ali
Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).
Dr. Ghali
As the most wretched of them deputed himself.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
when the most wretched of them, whose name was Qud?r, was dispatched, [when] he hastened, in order to hamstring the she-camel with their approval.
91:13
91:13
Transliteration
Faqala lahum rasoolu Allahi naqataAllahi wasuqyaha
Sahih International
And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink."
Muhsin Khan
But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh) ] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!"
Yusuf Ali
But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!"
Dr. Ghali
Then the Messenger of Allah said to them, "The she-camel of Allah! And (do not hinder) her drinking."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But then the messenger of God, S?lih, said to them, ‘[This is] the she-camel of God, so let her have her drink!’, her drink on her day — one day was hers, the next theirs.
91:14
91:14
Transliteration
Fakaththaboohu faAAaqaroohafadamdama AAalayhim rabbuhum bithanbihim fasawwaha
Sahih International
But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].
Muhsin Khan
Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)!
Yusuf Ali
Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)!
Dr. Ghali
Yet they cried lies to him. So they hamstrung her; then their Lord devastated them for their guilty (deed), so He leveled it (i.e., destroyed the whole country).
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But they denied him, with regard to his saying this [as being a command] from God — which if they contravened would immediately result in chastisement being sent down on them — then hamstrung her, they slew it in order to appropriate her [share of the] drinking water. So their Lord closed in on them, the chastisement, because of their sin, and meted it equally [among them], that is, the closing in on them, in other words, He subsumed them all by it, so that not one of them escaped.
91:15
91:15
Transliteration
Wala yakhafu AAuqbaha
Sahih International
And He does not fear the consequence thereof.
Muhsin Khan
And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof.
Yusuf Ali
And for Him is no fear of its consequences.
Dr. Ghali
And He does not fear its Ultimate Outcome.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And He does not (read wa-l?, or fa-l?) fear the consequence of it.
