| 92:1 | Transliteration Wallayli itha yaghsha Sahih International By the night when it covers Muhsin Khan By the night as it envelops; Yusuf Ali By the Night as it conceals (the light); Dr. Ghali And (by) the night when it envelops, Tafsir al-Jalalayn By the night as it enshrouds, with its darkness all that is between the heaven and the earth, | | 92:2 | Transliteration Wannahari itha tajalla Sahih International And [by] the day when it appears Muhsin Khan And by the day as it appears in brightness; Yusuf Ali By the Day as it appears in glory; Dr. Ghali And (by) the day when it manifests itself, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and [by] the day as it unveils, [as] it is revealed and becomes manifest (idh?, ‘as’, in both instances is an absolute adverbial, operated by the verbal action of the oath), | | 92:3 | Transliteration Wama khalaqa aththakarawal-ontha Sahih International And [by] He who created the male and female, Muhsin Khan And by Him Who created male and female; Yusuf Ali By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- Dr. Ghali And (by) That (i.e., the present life) which created the male and the female, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and [by] the One Who (m? either functions as man, ‘the One Who’, or it is related to a verbal action) created the male and the female, Adam and Eve, or every male and female — the hermaphrodite, although problematic for us, is [in fact] either male or female according to God, and therefore a person [actually] commits perjury if he speaks with one [thinking that] because he has sworn not to speak with a male or a female; [he may do so with a hermaphrodite]. | | 92:4 | Transliteration Inna saAAyakum lashatta Sahih International Indeed, your efforts are diverse. Muhsin Khan Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); Yusuf Ali Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. Dr. Ghali Surely your endeavor is indeed to diverse (ends). Tafsir al-Jalalayn Assuredly your efforts, your deeds, are dissimilar, with some working towards Paradise by means of obedience, while others [in effect] are working towards the Fire through [acts of] disobedience. | | 92:5 | Transliteration Faamma man aAAta wattaqa Sahih International As for he who gives and fears Allah Muhsin Khan As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, Yusuf Ali So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), Dr. Ghali So, as for him who gives, and is pious, Tafsir al-Jalalayn As for him who gives, what is due to God, and is fearful, of God, | | 92:6 | Transliteration Wasaddaqa bilhusna Sahih International And believes in the best [reward], Muhsin Khan And believes in Al-Husna. Yusuf Ali And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- Dr. Ghali And sincerely (believes) in the fairest (reward), Tafsir al-Jalalayn and affirms the truth of the best [word], that is, [the truth] of ‘there is no god but God’ (in both places [here and below, verse 9]), | | 92:7 | Transliteration Fasanuyassiruhu lilyusra Sahih International We will ease him toward ease. Muhsin Khan We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). Yusuf Ali We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. Dr. Ghali Then We will soon ease him to the Easiest. Tafsir al-Jalalayn We shall surely ease his way to [the abode of] ease, to Paradise. | | 92:8 | Transliteration Waamma man bakhila wastaghna Sahih International But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need Muhsin Khan But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. Yusuf Ali But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, Dr. Ghali And as for him who is miserly, and thinks himself self-sufficient, Tafsir al-Jalalayn But as for him who is niggardly, with what is due to God, and deems himself self-sufficient, without need for His reward, [92:9] and denies the best [word], | | 92:9 | Transliteration Wakaththaba bilhusna Sahih International And denies the best [reward], Muhsin Khan And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); Yusuf Ali And gives the lie to the best,- Dr. Ghali And cries lies to the fairest (reward), Tafsir al-Jalalayn and denies the best [word], | | 92:10 | Transliteration Fasanuyassiruhu lilAAusra Sahih International We will ease him toward difficulty. Muhsin Khan We will make smooth for him the path for evil; Yusuf Ali We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; Dr. Ghali Then We will soon ease him to the (great) Difficulty. Tafsir al-Jalalayn We shall surely ease his way, We shall pave for him the way, to hardship, to the Fire; | | 92:11 | Transliteration Wama yughnee AAanhu maluhu ithataradda Sahih International And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? Muhsin Khan And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). Yusuf Ali Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). Dr. Ghali And in no way will his wealth avail him when he topples (to death). Tafsir al-Jalalayn And his wealth shall not (m? is or negation) avail him when he perishes, in the Fire. | | 92:12 | Transliteration Inna AAalayna lalhuda Sahih International Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. Muhsin Khan Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, Yusuf Ali Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, Dr. Ghali Surely upon Us (rests) indeed the guidance, Tafsir al-Jalalayn Truly with Us lies [all] guidance, the pointing out of the path of guidance from that of error, so that Our command may be followed by adhering to the former [manner of conduct] and that Our prohibition [may also be heeded] by refraining from falling into the latter [manner of conduct]. | | 92:13 | Transliteration Wa-inna lana lal-akhirata wal-oola Sahih International And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. Muhsin Khan And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). Yusuf Ali And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. Dr. Ghali And surely to Us (belong) indeed the Hereafter and the First (i.e., the present life). Tafsir al-Jalalayn And truly to Us belong the Hereafter and the first [life], that is to say, [that of] this world, and so whoever seeks either of the two from anyone other than Us has erred. | | 92:14 | Transliteration Faanthartukum naran talaththa Sahih International So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. Muhsin Khan Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); Yusuf Ali Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; Dr. Ghali So I have warned you of a Fire that blazes fiercely, Tafsir al-Jalalayn So I have warned you of, I have threatened you, O people of Mecca, [with], a raging fire (talazz?, ‘raging’: one of the two original t?’ letters [of tatalazz?] has been omitted; a variant reading retains it, tatalazz?, that is, ‘one that is flaming’), | | 92:15 | Transliteration La yaslaha illaal-ashqa Sahih International None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. Muhsin Khan None shall enter it save the most wretched, Yusuf Ali None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones Dr. Ghali Whereat none except the most wretched will be roasted- Tafsir al-Jalalayn which none shall enter but the wretched one (al-ashq? means al-shaq?), | | 92:16 | Transliteration Allathee kaththaba watawalla Sahih International Who had denied and turned away. Muhsin Khan Who denies and turns away. Yusuf Ali Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. Dr. Ghali (He) who cried lies and turned away- Tafsir al-Jalalayn he who denies, the Prophet, and turns away, from faith — this delimiting [of those who deserve to enter this fire] constitutes an interpretation of His saying, But He forgives other than that to whomever He will [Q. 4:48], which in turn suggests that what is meant is that entry [into the Fire] which will be everlasting. | | 92:17 | Transliteration Wasayujannabuha al-atqa Sahih International But the righteous one will avoid it - Muhsin Khan And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V.2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). Yusuf Ali But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- Dr. Ghali And which the most pious will soon be made to avoid- Tafsir al-Jalalayn The God-fearing one (al-atq? means al-taq?) shall be spared it, he will be removed far away from it, | | 92:18 | Transliteration Allathee yu/tee malahuyatazakka Sahih International [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself Muhsin Khan He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, Yusuf Ali Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, Dr. Ghali (He) who brings (forth) his wealth to cleanse himself. Tafsir al-Jalalayn he who gives his wealth to purify himself, offering it as a [means of self] purification before God, exalted be He, by making this payment for the sake of God, exalted be He, and not for show or the sake of reputation, so that he [or the offering] stands purified in the sight of God. This [verse] was revealed regarding the truthful one (al-sidd?q) [Ab? Bakr], may God be pleased with him, when he purchased Bil?l [the Ethiopian], who was being tortured on account of his faith, and then freed him, whereat the disbelievers said, ‘He only did this in return for a favour which he [must have] owed him’, and so the following was revealed: | | 92:19 | Transliteration Wama li-ahadin AAindahu minniAAmatin tujza Sahih International And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded Muhsin Khan And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, Yusuf Ali And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, Dr. Ghali And in no way has anyone in his presence any favor to be recompensed, Tafsir al-Jalalayn and no one has any favour [outstanding] with him that must be requited; | | 92:20 | Transliteration Illa ibtighaa wajhi rabbihial-aAAla Sahih International But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. Muhsin Khan Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; Yusuf Ali But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; Dr. Ghali Except for seeking the Face of his Lord, The Most Exalted. Tafsir al-Jalalayn but, he did this, only seeking the pleasure of his Lord the Most High, that is to say, only seeking [to secure] God’s reward; | | 92:21 | Transliteration Walasawfa yarda Sahih International And he is going to be satisfied. Muhsin Khan He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). Yusuf Ali And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. Dr. Ghali And indeed he will eventually be satisfied. Tafsir al-Jalalayn and verily [soon] he shall [himself] be pleased, with the reward he will be given in Paradise. The verse applies [equally] to anyone who may do as he [Ab? Bakr] did, may God be pleased with him, and such [a person] will thereby be removed far from the Fire and rewarded. |
