104:1
Transliteration
Waylun likulli humazatin lumaza
Sahih International
Woe to every scorner and mocker
Muhsin Khan
Woe to every slanderer and backbiter.
Yusuf Ali
Woe to every (kind of) scandal-monger and-backbiter,
Dr. Ghali
Woe to every persistent slanderer, persistent defamer,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Woe (waylun: an expression implying chastisement) to every backbiter, [who is a] slanderer, frequently engaging in backbiting and slander, that is to say, defamation — this was revealed regarding those who slandered the Prophet (s) and the believers, the likes of Umayya b. Khalaf, al-Wal?d b. al-Mugh?ra and others —

Transliteration
Allathee jamaAAa malanwaAAaddadah
Sahih International
Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.
Muhsin Khan
Who has gathered wealth and counted it,
Yusuf Ali
Who pileth up wealth and layeth it by,
Dr. Ghali
Who has gathered wealth and counted it over.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
who amasses (read jama‘a or jamma‘a) wealth and counts it over, keeping count of it and stores it aside as a provision against the [unforeseeable] calamities of time.
104:3

Transliteration
Yahsabu anna malahu akhladah
Sahih International
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
Muhsin Khan
He thinks that his wealth will make him last forever!
Yusuf Ali
Thinking that his wealth would make him last for ever!
Dr. Ghali
He reckons that his wealth has made him eternal!
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He thinks, in his ignorance, that his wealth will make him immortal, never to die.
104:4
104:4
Transliteration
Kalla layunbathanna fee alhutama
Sahih International
No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.
Muhsin Khan
Nay! Verily, he will be thrown into the crushing Fire.
Yusuf Ali
By no means! He will be sure to be thrown into That which Breaks to Pieces,
Dr. Ghali
Not at all! Indeed he will definitely be flung off into the Crusher.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay! — a repudiation — He will surely be flung (la-yunbadhanna is the response to an omitted oath), that is, he will be hurled down, into the Crusher, that crushes everything that is thrown into it.

Wama adraka ma alhutama
Sahih International
And what can make you know what is the Crusher?

And what will make you know what the crushing Fire is?
Yusuf Ali
And what will explain to thee That which Breaks to Pieces?
Dr. Ghali
And what makes you realize what the Crusher is?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And what will show you, [what] will make known to you, what the Crusher is?
104:6

Transliteration
Naru Allahi almooqada
Sahih International
It is the fire of Allah , [eternally] fueled,

The fire of Allah, kindled,
Yusuf Ali
(It is) the Fire of (the Wrath of) Allah kindled (to a blaze),
Dr. Ghali
(It is) the Fire of Allah kindled,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[It is] the fire of God, kindled, set ablaze,
104:7

Transliteration
Allatee tattaliAAu AAalaal-af-ida
Sahih International
Which mounts directed at the hearts.
Muhsin Khan
Which leaps up over the hearts,
Yusuf Ali
The which doth mount (Right) to the Hearts:
Dr. Ghali
Which views the heart-sights.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
which peers over the hearts, to burn them — the pain of which is much more severe than any other because of the delicate nature [of the heart].
104:8

Transliteration
lnnaha AAalayhim mu/sada
Sahih International
Indeed, Hellfire will be closed down upon them
Muhsin Khan
Verily, it shall be closed in on them,
Yusuf Ali
It shall be made into a vault over them,
Dr. Ghali
Surely it is vaulted over (i.e., with no outlet) upon them,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Lo! it will be closed in (mu’sada or m?sada) on them (‘alayhim, ‘on them’: the plural pronoun takes into account the [plural] import of kull, ‘every’),

Fee AAamadin mumaddada
Sahih International
In extended columns.
Muhsin Khan
In pillars stretched forth (i.e. they will be punished in the Fire with pillars, etc.).
Yusuf Ali
In columns outstretched.
Dr. Ghali
In pillars widely extended.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
in outstretched (mumaddadatin is an adjective qualifying the preceding [noun, ‘amadin]) columns (read ‘umudin or ‘amadin), and will therefore be inside the columns.
