| 15:1 | Transliteration Alif-lam-ra tilka ayatualkitabi waqur-anin mubeen Sahih International Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an. Muhsin Khan Alif-Lam-Ra. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Quran. Yusuf Ali A. L. R. These are the Ayats of Revelation,- of a Qur'an that makes things clear. Dr. Ghali Alif, Lam, Mim, Ra (These are the names of letters of the Arabic alphabet, and only Allah knows their meaning here). Those are the ayat (Verses, signs) of the Book and an Evident Qur'an. |
| 15:2 | Transliteration Rubama yawaddu allatheenakafaroo law kanoo muslimeen Sahih International Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims. Muhsin Khan Perhaps (often) will those who disbelieve wish that they were Muslims [those who have submitted themselves to Allah's Will in Islam Islamic Monotheism, this will be on the Day of Resurrection when they will see the disbelievers going to Hell and the Muslims going to Paradise]. Yusuf Ali Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to Allah's will) in Islam. Dr. Ghali (Probably) the ones who have disbelieved would often rather like that if they were Muslims. |
| 15:3 | Transliteration Tharhum ya/kuloo wayatamattaAAoowayulhihimu al-amalu fasawfa yaAAlamoon Sahih International Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know. Muhsin Khan Leave them to eat and enjoy, and let them be preoccupied with (false) hope. They will come to know! Yusuf Ali Leave them alone, to enjoy (the good things of this life) and to please themselves: let (false) hope amuse them: soon will knowledge (undeceive them). Dr. Ghali Leave them out to eat and enjoy (life), and let (false) aspiration divert them; then eventually they will know. |
| 15:4 | Transliteration Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illawalaha kitabun maAAloom Sahih International And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. Muhsin Khan And never did We destroy a township but there was a known decree for it. Yusuf Ali Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand. Dr. Ghali And in no way did We cause any town to perish except that it had a known (prescribed) Book. |
| 15:5 | Transliteration Ma tasbiqu min ommatin ajalahawama yasta/khiroon Sahih International No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter. Muhsin Khan No nation can anticipate its term, nor delay it. Yusuf Ali Neither can a people anticipate its term, nor delay it. Dr. Ghali In no way can any nation outstrip its term, and in no way will they (be able) to postpone it. |
| 15:6 | Transliteration Waqaloo ya ayyuha allatheenuzzila AAalayhi aththikru innaka lamajnoon Sahih International And they say,"O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad. Muhsin Khan And they say: "O you (Muhammad SAW ) to whom the Dhikr (the Quran) has been sent down! Verily, you are a mad man. Yusuf Ali They say: "O thou to whom the Message is being revealed! truly thou art mad (or possessed)! Dr. Ghali And they said, "O you upon whom the Remembrance is being sent down, surely you are indeed a madman. |
| 15:7 | Transliteration Law ma ta/teena bilmala-ikatiin kunta mina assadiqeen Sahih International Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?" Muhsin Khan "Why do you not bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?" Yusuf Ali "Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?" Dr. Ghali Would you ever come up with the Angels to us, in case you are of the sincere?" |
| 15:8 | Transliteration Ma nunazzilu almala-ikata illabilhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareen Sahih International We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved. Muhsin Khan We send not the angels down except with the truth (i.e. for torment, etc.), and in that case, they (the disbelievers) would have no respite! Yusuf Ali We send not the angels down except for just cause: if they came (to the ungodly), behold! no respite would they have! Dr. Ghali In no way do We send down the Angels except with the Truth; and lo, in no way would they (The disbelievers) be respited. |
| 15:9 | Transliteration Inna nahnu nazzalna aththikrawa-inna lahu lahafithoon Sahih International Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. Muhsin Khan Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). Yusuf Ali We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption). Dr. Ghali Surely We, Ever We, have been sending down the Remembrance, and surely We are indeed Preservers of it. |
| 15:10 | Transliteration Walaqad arsalna min qablika feeshiyaAAi al-awwaleen Sahih International And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. Muhsin Khan Indeed, We sent Messengers before you (O Muhammad SAW) amongst the sects (communities) of old. Yusuf Ali We did send messengers before thee amongst the religious sects of old: Dr. Ghali And indeed We sent (Messengers) even before you among the sects of the earliest (people). |
| 15:11 | Transliteration Wama ya/teehim min rasoolin illakanoo bihi yastahzi-oon Sahih International And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him. Muhsin Khan And never came a Messenger to them but they did mock him. Yusuf Ali But never came a messenger to them but they mocked him. Dr. Ghali And in no way did a Messenger come up to them except that they used to mock at him. |
| 15:12 | Transliteration Kathalika naslukuhu fee quloobialmujrimeen Sahih International Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals. Muhsin Khan Thus do We let it (polytheism and disbelief) enter into the hearts of the Mujrimun [criminals, polytheists, pagans, etc. (because of their mockery at the Messengers)]. Yusuf Ali Even so do we let it creep into the hearts of the sinners - Dr. Ghali Thus We insert it (Disbelief) into the hearts of the criminals. |
| 15:13 | Transliteration La yu/minoona bihi waqad khalatsunnatu al-awwaleen Sahih International They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples. Muhsin Khan They would not believe in it (the Quran), and already the example of (Allah's punishment of) the ancients (who disbelieved) has gone forth. Yusuf Ali That they should not believe in the (Message); but the ways of the ancients have passed away. Dr. Ghali They do not believe in it; (The Message) and the enactment (The reward for good and evil) (for) the earliest (people) has already passed away. |
| 15:14 | Transliteration Walaw fatahna AAalayhim babanmina assama-i fathalloo feehiyaAArujoon Sahih International And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend, Muhsin Khan And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending thereto, Yusuf Ali Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein, Dr. Ghali And (even) if We opened upon them a gate of the heaven (and) so they linger on winding up through it, |
| 15:15 | Transliteration Laqaloo innama sukkirat absarunabal nahnu qawmun mashooroon Sahih International They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic." Muhsin Khan They would surely say: "Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled. Nay, we are a people bewitched." Yusuf Ali They would only say: "Our eyes have been intoxicated: Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery." Dr. Ghali They would indeed say, "Surely it is only that our be holdings (i.e., eyesights) are stupefied; no indeed, we are a people bewitched!" |
| 15:16 | Transliteration Walaqad jaAAalna fee assama-iburoojan wazayyannaha linnathireen Sahih International And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers. Muhsin Khan And indeed, We have put the big stars in the heaven and We beautified it for the beholders. Yusuf Ali It is We Who have set out the zodiacal signs in the heavens, and made them fair-seeming to (all) beholders; Dr. Ghali And indeed We have already made in the heaven constellations, and We have adorned it to the onlookers. |
| 15:17 | Transliteration Wahafithnahamin kulli shaytanin rajeem Sahih International And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah ] Muhsin Khan And We have guarded it (near heaven) from every outcast Shaitan (devil). Yusuf Ali And (moreover) We have guarded them from every cursed devil: Dr. Ghali And We have preserved it from every outcast Shaytan (The all-vicious, i.e., the Devil). |
| 15:18 | Transliteration Illa mani istaraqa assamAAafaatbaAAahu shihabun mubeen Sahih International Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame. Muhsin Khan Except him (devil) that gains hearing by stealing, he is pursued by a clear flaming fire. Yusuf Ali But any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see). Dr. Ghali Excepting him who (gains) hearing by stealth, (and) so an evidently flaming (meteor) follows him up. |
| 15:19 | Transliteration Wal-arda madadnahawaalqayna feeha rawasiya waanbatnafeeha min kulli shay-in mawzoon Sahih International And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing. Muhsin Khan And the earth We spread out, and placed therein firm mountains, and caused to grow therein all kinds of things in due proportion. Yusuf Ali And the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance. Dr. Ghali And the earth-We have extended it and cast on it anchorages, (i.e., mountains) and We have caused to grow therein of everything (evenly) weighed. |
| 15:20 | Transliteration WajaAAalna lakum feeha maAAayishawaman lastum lahu biraziqeen Sahih International And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers. Muhsin Khan And We have provided therein means of living, for you and for those whom you provide not [moving (living) creatures, cattle, beasts, and other animals]. Yusuf Ali And We have provided therein means of subsistence,- for you and for those for whose sustenance ye are not responsible. Dr. Ghali And We have made for you (means of) subsistence therein and for the ones you do not even provide for (Literally: for whom you are not providers). |
| 15:21 | Transliteration Wa-in min shay-in illa AAindanakhaza-inuhu wama nunazziluhu illa biqadarinmaAAloom Sahih International And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure. Muhsin Khan And there is not a thing, but with Us are the stores thereof. And We send it not down except in a known measure. Yusuf Ali And there is not a thing but its (sources and) treasures (inexhaustible) are with Us; but We only send down thereof in due and ascertainable measures. Dr. Ghali And decidedly there is not a thing excepting that its treasuries are in Our Providence, and in no way do We send it down except in a known estimate. |
| 15:22 | Transliteration Waarsalna arriyaha lawaqihafaanzalna mina assama-i maanfaasqaynakumoohu wama antum lahu bikhazineen Sahih International And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers. Muhsin Khan And We send the winds fertilizing (to fill heavily the clouds with water), then caused the water (rain) to descend from the sky, and We gave it to you to drink, and it is not you who are the owners of its stores [i.e. to give water to whom you like or to withhold it from whom you like]. Yusuf Ali And We send the fecundating winds, then cause the rain to descend from the sky, therewith providing you with water (in abundance), though ye are not the guardians of its stores. Dr. Ghali And We send the winds impregnating, (and) so We send down from the heaven water, then We give it to you to drink, and in no way can you even be its treasurers. |
| 15:23 | Transliteration Wa-inna lanahnu nuhyeewanumeetu wanahnu alwarithoon Sahih International And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor. Muhsin Khan And certainly We! We it is Who give life, and cause death, and We are the Inheritors. Yusuf Ali And verily, it is We Who give life, and Who give death: it is We Who remain inheritors (after all else passes away). Dr. Ghali And surely We, Ever We, indeed give life and make to die, and We are the inheritors. |
| 15:24 | Transliteration Walaqad AAalimna almustaqdimeenaminkum walaqad AAalimna almusta/khireen Sahih International And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come]. Muhsin Khan And indeed, We know the first generations of you who had passed away, and indeed, We know the present generations of you (mankind), and also those who will come afterwards. Yusuf Ali To Us are known those of you who hasten forward, and those who lag behind. Dr. Ghali And indeed We already know the ones of you who can go forward, and indeed We already know the ones who can postpone. |
| 15:25 | Transliteration Wa-inna rabbaka huwa yahshuruhuminnahu hakeemun AAaleem Sahih International And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing. Muhsin Khan And verily, your Lord will gather them together. Truly, He is All-Wise, All-Knowing. Yusuf Ali Assuredly it is thy Lord Who will gather them together: for He is perfect in Wisdom and Knowledge. Dr. Ghali And surely your Lord, Ever He, will muster them; surely He is Ever-Wise, Ever-Knowing. |
| 15:26 | Transliteration Walaqad khalaqna al-insana minsalsalin min hama-in masnoon Sahih International And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud. Muhsin Khan And indeed, We created man from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. Yusuf Ali We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape; Dr. Ghali And indeed We already created man of dry clay of mud modeled. |
| 15:27 | Transliteration Waljanna khalaqnahumin qablu min nari assamoom Sahih International And the jinn We created before from scorching fire. Muhsin Khan And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire. Yusuf Ali And the Jinn race, We had created before, from the fire of a scorching wind. Dr. Ghali And the jinn race We created earlier of the fire (The Arabic word samum is sometimes understood to be pestilential wind) of a pestilential (fire). |
| 15:28 | Transliteration Wa-ith qala rabbuka lilmala-ikatiinnee khaliqun basharan min salsalin min hama-inmasnoon Sahih International And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud. Muhsin Khan And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. Yusuf Ali Behold! thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man, from sounding clay from mud moulded into shape; Dr. Ghali And as your Lord said to the Angels, "Surely I am creating a mortal of dry clay of mud modeled. |
| 15:29 | Transliteration Fa-itha sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu feehimin roohee faqaAAoo lahu sajideen Sahih International And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration." Muhsin Khan "So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him." Yusuf Ali "When I have fashioned him (in due proportion) and breathed into him of My spirit, fall ye down in obeisance unto him." Dr. Ghali So, when I have molded him and breathed into him of My Spirit, fall down to him prostrating!" |
| 15:30 | Transliteration Fasajada almala-ikatu kulluhumajmaAAoon Sahih International So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely, Muhsin Khan So, the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together. Yusuf Ali So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together: Dr. Ghali So the Angels prostrated themselves, all of them together. |
| 15:31 | Transliteration Illa ibleesa aba an yakoonamaAAa assajideen Sahih International Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated. Muhsin Khan Except Iblis (Satan), - he refused to be among the prostrators. Yusuf Ali Not so Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves. Dr. Ghali Except Iblis; he refused to be among the prostrate. |
| 15:32 | Transliteration Qala ya ibleesu ma lakaalla takoona maAAa assajideen Sahih International [ Allah ] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?" Muhsin Khan (Allah) said: "O Iblis (Satan)! What is your reason for not being among the prostrators?" Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "O Iblis! what is your reason for not being among those who prostrated themselves?" Dr. Ghali Said He, "O Iblis, what about you, that you are not among the prostrate?" |
| 15:33 | Transliteration Qala lam akun li-asjuda libasharinkhalaqtahu min salsalin min hama-in masnoon Sahih International He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud." Muhsin Khan [Iblis (Satan)] said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud." Yusuf Ali (Iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape." Dr. Ghali Said he, "Indeed I did not have to prostrate myself to a mortal whom You created of dry clay of mud modeled." |
| 15:34 | Transliteration Qala fakhruj minhafa-innaka rajeem Sahih International [ Allah ] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled. Muhsin Khan (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one)." [Tafsir At-Tabari] Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "Then get thee out from here; for thou art rejected, accursed. Dr. Ghali Said He, "Then get out (Literally: go out) of it; so, surely you are outcast. |
| 15:35 | Transliteration Wa-inna AAalayka allaAAnata ila yawmiaddeen Sahih International And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense." Muhsin Khan "And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)." Yusuf Ali "And the curse shall be on thee till the day of Judgment." Dr. Ghali And surely the curse will be upon you till the Day of Doom." |
| 15:36 | Transliteration Qala rabbi faanthirneeila yawmi yubAAathoon Sahih International He said,"My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected." | 15:39 | Transliteration Qala rabbi bima aghwaytaneelaozayyinanna lahum fee al-ardi walaoghwiyannahumajmaAAeen Sahih International [Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all Muhsin Khan [Iblis (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. Yusuf Ali (Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,- Dr. Ghali Said he, "Lord! For (the fact) that You misguided me, indeed I will definitely adorn for them (i.e., make "evil" attractive to them) in the earth; and indeed I will definitely misguide them all together, |
| 15:40 | Transliteration Illa AAibadaka minhumualmukhlaseen Sahih International Except, among them, Your chosen servants." Muhsin Khan "Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them." Yusuf Ali "Except Thy servants among them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace)." Dr. Ghali Excepting Your bondmen among them, who are most faithful." |
| 15:41 | Transliteration Qala hatha siratunAAalayya mustaqeem Sahih International [ Allah ] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight. Muhsin Khan (Allah) said: "This is the Way which will lead straight to Me." Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "This (way of My sincere servants) is indeed a way that leads straight to Me. Dr. Ghali Said He, "This is for Me a straight Path. |
| 15:42 | Transliteration Inna AAibadee laysa laka AAalayhimsultanun illa mani ittabaAAaka mina alghaween Sahih International Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators. Muhsin Khan "Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghawin (Mushrikun and those who go astray, criminals, polytheists, and evil-doers, etc.). Yusuf Ali "For over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee." Dr. Ghali Surely over My bondmen you will have no all-binding authority, except the ones who closely follow you of the misguided ones." |
| 15:43 | Transliteration Wa-inna jahannama lamawAAiduhum ajmaAAeen Sahih International And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all. Muhsin Khan "And surely, Hell is the promised place for them all. Yusuf Ali And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all! Dr. Ghali And surely Hell will be indeed their promised (abode) all together. |
| 15:44 | Transliteration Laha sabAAatu abwabin likullibabin minhum juz-on maqsoom Sahih International It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated." Muhsin Khan "It (Hell) has seven gates, for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned. Yusuf Ali To it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned. Dr. Ghali It has seven gates; and each gate has an appointed part (Literally: divided). |
| 15:45 | Transliteration Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatinwaAAuyoon Sahih International Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs. Muhsin Khan "Truly! The Muttaqun (pious and righteous persons - see V.2:2) will be amidst Gardens and water-springs (Paradise). Yusuf Ali The righteous (will be) amid gardens and fountains (of clear-flowing water). Dr. Ghali Surely the pious will be amidst Gardens and Springs." |
| 15:46 | Transliteration Odkhulooha bisalamin amineen Sahih International [Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]." Muhsin Khan "(It will be said to them): 'Enter therein (Paradise), in peace and security.' Yusuf Ali (Their greeting will be): "Enter ye here in peace and security." Dr. Ghali "Enter them, in peace, secure!" |
| 15:47 | Transliteration WanazaAAna ma fee sudoorihimmin ghillin ikhwanan AAala sururin mutaqabileen Sahih International And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other. Muhsin Khan "And We shall remove from their breasts any sense of injury (that they may have), (So they will be like) brothers facing each other on thrones. Yusuf Ali And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury: (they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (of dignity). Dr. Ghali And We will draw out from them whatever rancor may be in their breasts; as brethren they will be upon settees facing one another. |
| 15:48 | Transliteration La yamassuhum feeha nasabunwama hum minha bimukhrajeen Sahih International No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed. Muhsin Khan "No sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave it." Yusuf Ali There no sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave. Dr. Ghali No toil will touch them therein, and in no way will they be made to go out of it. |
| 15:49 | Transliteration Nabbi/ AAibadee annee anaalghafooru arraheem Sahih International [O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful. | 15.50 | Transliteration Waanna AAathabee huwa alAAathabual-aleem Sahih International And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment. Muhsin Khan And that My Torment is indeed the most painful torment. Yusuf Ali And that My Penalty will be indeed the most grievous Penalty. Dr. Ghali And that My torment is the (most) painful torment. |
| 15:51 | Transliteration Wanabbi/hum AAan dayfi ibraheem Sahih International And inform them about the guests of Abraham, Muhsin Khan And tell them about the guests (the angels) of Ibrahim (Abraham). [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you." Muhsin Khan When they entered unto him, and said: Salaman (peace)! [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Indeed! We are afraid of you." Yusuf Ali When they entered his presence and said, "Peace!" He said, "We feel afraid of you!" Dr. Ghali As they entered to him (and) so they said, "Peace!" He said, "Surely we feel tremulous of you." |
| 15:53 | Transliteration Qaloo la tawjal innanubashshiruka bighulamin AAaleem Sahih International [The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy." Muhsin Khan They (the angels) said: "Do not be afraid! We give you glad tidings of a boy (son) possessing much knowledge and wisdom." Yusuf Ali They said: "Fear not! We give thee glad tidings of a son endowed with wisdom." Dr. Ghali They said, "Do not feel tremulous. Surely we give you glad tidings of a knowledgeable youth." |
| 15:54 | Transliteration Qala abashshartumoonee AAalaan massaniya alkibaru fabima tubashshiroon Sahih International He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?" Muhsin Khan [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Do you give me glad tidings (of a son) when old age has overtaken me? Of what then is your news?" Yusuf Ali He said: "Do ye give me glad tidings that old age has seized me? Of what, then, is your good news?" Dr. Ghali He said, "Do you give me glad tidings, though being great (with years) has touched me? (i.e., I am an old man) Of what do you give me glad tidings?" |
| 15:55 | Transliteration Qaloo bashsharnaka bilhaqqifala takun mina alqaniteen Sahih International They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing." Muhsin Khan They (the angels) said: "We give you glad tidings in truth. So be not of the despairing ones." Yusuf Ali They said: "We give thee glad tidings in truth: be not then in despair!" Dr. Ghali They said, "We have given you glad tidings with the truth, so do not be of the ones who are despondent." |
| 15:56 | Transliteration Qala waman yaqnatu min rahmatirabbihi illa addalloon Sahih International He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?" Muhsin Khan [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "And who despairs of the Mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?" Yusuf Ali He said: "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord, but such as go astray?" Dr. Ghali He said, "And who is despondent of the mercy of his Lord excepting the erring?" |

Them all we are surely going to save (from destruction). | 15:60 | Transliteration Illa imraatahu qaddarna innahalamina alghabireen Sahih International Except his wife." Allah decreed that she is of those who remain behind. Muhsin Khan "Except his wife, of whom We have decreed that she shall be of those who remain behind (i.e. she will be destroyed)." Yusuf Ali "Except his wife, who, We have ascertained, will be among those who will lag behind." Dr. Ghali Excepting his wife. We have determined (that) surely she will indeed be of the laggards." |
| 15:61 | Transliteration Falamma jaa ala lootinalmursaloon Sahih International And when the messengers came to the family of Lot, Muhsin Khan Then, when the Messengers (the angels) came unto the family of Lout (Lot). Yusuf Ali At length when the messengers arrived among the adherents of Lut, Dr. Ghali So, as soon as the Emissaries came to the house of Lut; (Lot). |

| 15:63 | Transliteration Qaloo bal ji/naka bimakanoo feehi yamtaroon Sahih International They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing, Muhsin Khan They said: "Nay, we have come to you with that (torment) which they have been doubting. Yusuf Ali They said: "Yea, we have come to thee to accomplish that of which they doubt. Dr. Ghali They said, "No indeed, we have come to you with that about which they were wrangling; |
| 15:64 | Transliteration Waataynaka bilhaqqiwa-inna lasadiqoon Sahih International And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful. Muhsin Khan "And we have brought to you the truth (the news of the destruction of your nation) and certainly, we tell the truth. Yusuf Ali "We have brought to thee that which is inevitably due, and assuredly we tell the truth. Dr. Ghali And we have come up to you with the truth; and surely we are indeed sincere. |
| 15:65 | Transliteration Faasri bi-ahlika biqitAAin minaallayli wattabiAA adbarahum wala yaltafitminkum ahadun wamdoo haythutu/maroon Sahih International So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded." Muhsin Khan "Then travel in a part of the night with your family, and you go behind them in the rear, and let no one amongst you look back, but go on to where you are ordered." Yusuf Ali "Then travel by night with thy household, when a portion of the night (yet remains), and do thou bring up the rear: let no one amongst you look back, but pass on whither ye are ordered." Dr. Ghali So set forth with your family in a watch of the night and closely follow after them in the rear, and let not any of you turn round; and pass away to (the place) where you are commanded." |
| 15:66 | Transliteration Waqadayna ilayhi thalikaal-amra anna dabira haola-i maqtooAAunmusbiheen Sahih International And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning. Muhsin Khan And We made known this decree to him, that the root of those (sinners) was to be cut off in the early morning. Yusuf Ali And We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning. Dr. Ghali And We decreed for him that Command, that the last trace of these was to be cut off in the (early) morning. |
| 15:67 | Transliteration Wajaa ahlu almadeenati yastabshiroon Sahih International And the people of the city came rejoicing. Muhsin Khan And the inhabitants of the city came rejoicing (at the news of the young men's arrival). Yusuf Ali The inhabitants of the city came in (mad) joy (at news of the young men). Dr. Ghali And the population of the city came (to witness) the glad tidings. |
| 15:68 | Transliteration Qala inna haola-i dayfeefala tafdahoon Sahih International [Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me. Muhsin Khan [Lout (Lot)] said: "Verily! these are my guests, so shame me not. Yusuf Ali Lut said: "These are my guests: disgrace me not: Dr. Ghali He said, "Surely these are my guests; so do not put me to shame. |
| 15:69 | Transliteration Wattaqoo Allaha walatukhzoon Sahih International And fear Allah and do not disgrace me." Muhsin Khan "And fear Allah and disgrace me not." Yusuf Ali "But fear Allah, and shame me not." Dr. Ghali And be pious to Allah and do not disgrace me." |
| 15:70 | Transliteration Qaloo awa lam nanhaka AAani alAAalameen Sahih International They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?" Muhsin Khan They (people of the city) said: "Did we not forbid you to entertain (or protect) any of the 'Alamin (people, foreigners, strangers, etc. from us)?" Yusuf Ali They said: "Did we not forbid thee (to speak) for all and sundry?" Dr. Ghali They said, "Have we not forbidden you (to entertain all) men?" (Literally: the worlds) |
| 15:71 | Transliteration Qala haola-i banateein kuntum faAAileen Sahih International [Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]." Muhsin Khan [Lout (Lot)] said: "These (the girls of the nation) are my daughters (to marry lawfully), if you must act (so)." Yusuf Ali He said: "There are my daughters (to marry), if ye must act (so)." Dr. Ghali He said, "These are my daughters (to marry), if you would be performing (that)." |
| 15:72 | Transliteration LaAAamruka innahum lafee sakratihimyaAAmahoona Sahih International By your life, [O Muhammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly. Muhsin Khan Verily, by your life (O Muhammad SAW), in their wild intoxication, they were wandering blindly. Yusuf Ali Verily, by thy life (O Prophet), in their wild intoxication, they wander in distraction, to and fro. Dr. Ghali By your life, surely they were indeed blundering in their stupor. |
| 15:73 | Transliteration Faakhathat-humu assayhatumushriqeen Sahih International So the shriek seized them at sunrise. Muhsin Khan So As-Saihah (torment - awful cry, etc.) overtook them at the time of sunrise; Yusuf Ali But the (mighty) Blast overtook them before morning, Dr. Ghali Then the Shout took them (away) at sunshine. |
| 15:74 | Transliteration FajaAAalna AAaliyaha safilahawaamtarna AAalayhim hijaratan minsijjeel Sahih International And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay. Muhsin Khan And We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down and rained down on them stones of baked clay. Yusuf Ali And We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay. Dr. Ghali So We turned it upside-down, and We rained upon them stones of baked clay. |
| 15:75 | Transliteration Inna fee thalika laayatinlilmutawassimeen Sahih International Indeed in that are signs for those who discern. Muhsin Khan Surely! In this are signs, for those who see (or understand or learn the lessons from the Signs of Allah). Yusuf Ali Behold! in this are Signs for those who by tokens do understand. Dr. Ghali Surely in that are indeed signs for the scrutinizers (i.e., Those who look for the destroyed cities). |
| 15:76 | Transliteration Wa-innaha labisabeelin muqeem Sahih International And indeed, those cities are [situated] on an established road. Muhsin Khan And verily! They (the cities) were right on the highroad (from Makkah to Syria i.e. the place where the Dead Sea is now). Yusuf Ali And the (cities were) right on the high-road. Dr. Ghali And surely it is indeed on a way that still exists. |
| 15:77 | Transliteration Inna fee thalika laayatanlilmu/mineen Sahih International Indeed in that is a sign for the believers. Muhsin Khan Surely! Therein is indeed a sign for the believers. Yusuf Ali Behold! in this is a sign for those who believed. Dr. Ghali Surely in that is indeed a sign for the believers. |
| 15:78 | Transliteration Wa-in kana as-habual-aykati lathalimeen Sahih International And the companions of the thicket were [also] wrongdoers. Muhsin Khan And the dwellers in the wood [i.e. the people of Madyan (Midian) to whom Prophet Shu'aib was sent by Allah), were also Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). Yusuf Ali And the Companions of the Wood were also wrong-doers; Dr. Ghali And decidedly the companions of the Thicket (i.e., the dwellers of Madyan) were indeed unjust. |
| 15:79 | Transliteration Fantaqamna minhum wa-innahumalabi-imamin mubeen Sahih International So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway. Muhsin Khan So, We took vengeance on them. They are both on an open highway, plain to see. Yusuf Ali So We exacted retribution from them. They were both on an open highway, plain to see. Dr. Ghali So We took vengeance on them; and surely the two of them were indeed on an evident record (or: register, literally:Imam). |
| 15:80 | Transliteration Walaqad kaththaba as-habualhijri almursaleen Sahih International And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers. Muhsin Khan And verily, the dwellers of Al-Hijr (the rocky tract) denied the Messengers. Yusuf Ali The Companions of the Rocky Tract also rejected the messengers: Dr. Ghali And indeed the companions (i.e., the inhabitants) of Al- Hijr readily cried lies to the Emissaries. |
| 15:81 | Transliteration Waataynahum ayatinafakanoo AAanha muAArideen Sahih International And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away. Muhsin Khan And We gave them Our Signs, but they were averse to them. Yusuf Ali We sent them Our Signs, but they persisted in turning away from them. Dr. Ghali And We brought them Our signs, yet they were veering away from them. |
| 15:82 | Transliteration Wakanoo yanhitoona mina aljibalibuyootan amineen Sahih International And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure. Muhsin Khan And they used to hew out dwellings from the mountains (feeling themselves) secure. Yusuf Ali Out of the mountains did they hew (their) edifices, (feeling themselves) secure. Dr. Ghali And they used to hew the mountains into homes, (therein dwelling) securely. |
| 15:83 | Transliteration Faakhathat-humu assayhatumusbiheen Sahih International But the shriek seized them at early morning. Muhsin Khan But As-Saihah (torment - awful cry etc.) overtook them in the early morning (of the fourth day of their promised punishment days). Yusuf Ali But the (mighty) Blast seized them of a morning, Dr. Ghali So the Shout took them (away) in the (early) morning. |
| 15:84 | Transliteration Fama aghna AAanhum ma kanooyaksiboon Sahih International So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn. Muhsin Khan And all that which they used to earn availed them not. Yusuf Ali And of no avail to them was all that they did (with such art and care)! Dr. Ghali Then in no way did whatever they used to earn avail them. |
| 15:85 | Transliteration Wama khalaqna assamawatiwal-arda wama baynahuma illabilhaqqi wa-inna assaAAata laatiyatunfasfahi assafhaaljameel Sahih International And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness. Muhsin Khan And We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except with truth, and the Hour is surely coming, so overlook (O Muhammad SAW), their faults with gracious forgiveness. [This was before the ordainment of Jihad holy fighting in Allah's Cause]. Yusuf Ali We created not the heavens, the earth, and all between them, but for just ends. And the Hour is surely coming (when this will be manifest). So overlook (any human faults) with gracious forgiveness. Dr. Ghali And in no way did We create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except with the Truth; and surely the Hour is indeed coming up, so pardon, with becoming pardoning. |
| 15:86 | Transliteration Inna rabbaka huwa alkhallaqualAAaleem Sahih International Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator. Muhsin Khan Verily, your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator. Yusuf Ali For verily it is thy Lord who is the Master-Creator, knowing all things. Dr. Ghali Surely your Lord, He is The Sublime Creator, The Ever-Knowing. |
| 15:87 | Transliteration Walaqad ataynaka sabAAan minaalmathanee walqur-ana alAAatheem Sahih International And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an. Muhsin Khan And indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of Al-Mathani (the seven repeatedly recited Verses), (i.e. Surat Al-Fatiha) and the Grand Quran. Yusuf Ali And We have bestowed upon thee the Seven Oft-repeated (verses) and the Grand Qur'an. Dr. Ghali And indeed We have already brought you seven of the oft-repeated (i.e., the Opening Surah " Al-Fatihah", as it includes praise and laudation in seven verses) and the magnificent Qur'an. |
| 15:88 | Transliteration La tamuddanna AAaynayka ila mamattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum wala tahzanAAalayhim wakhfid janahaka lilmu/mineen Sahih International Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of the disbelievers, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers Muhsin Khan Look not with your eyes ambitiously at what We have bestowed on certain classes of them (the disbelievers), nor grieve over them. And lower your wings for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers). Yusuf Ali Strain not thine eyes. (Wistfully) at what We have bestowed on certain classes of them, nor grieve over them: but lower thy wing (in gentleness) to the believers. Dr. Ghali Do not definitely extend forth your eyes to what We have given pairs of them to enjoy; and be not grieved for them, and lower your wing to the believers. |
| 15:89 | Transliteration Waqul innee ana annatheerualmubeen Sahih International And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" - Muhsin Khan And say: "I am indeed a plain warner." Yusuf Ali And say: "I am indeed he that warneth openly and without ambiguity,"- Dr. Ghali And say, "Surely, I, constantly I, am the evident warner." |
| 15:90 | Transliteration Kama anzalna AAalaalmuqtasimeen Sahih International Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators Muhsin Khan As We have sent down on the dividers, (Quraish pagans or Jews and Christians). Yusuf Ali (Of just such wrath) as We sent down on those who divided (Scripture into arbitrary parts),- Dr. Ghali Just as We sent down upon those who divide among themselves, (i.e., draw lots or divide by means of headless arrows). |
| 15:91 | Transliteration Allatheena jaAAaloo alqur-anaAAideen Sahih International Who have made the Qur'an into portions. Muhsin Khan Who have made the Quran into parts. (i.e. believed in a part and disbelieved in the other). Yusuf Ali (So also on such) as have made Qur'an into shreds (as they please). Dr. Ghali Who have made the Qur'an into fragments. |
| 15:92 | Transliteration Fawarabbika lanas-alannahum ajmaAAeen Sahih International So by your Lord, We will surely question them all Muhsin Khan So, by your Lord (O Muhammad SAW), We shall certainly call all of them to account. Yusuf Ali Therefore, by the Lord, We will, of a surety, call them to account, Dr. Ghali So, by your Lord, indeed We will definitely ask them all together. |
| 15:93 | Transliteration AAamma kanoo yaAAmaloon Sahih International About what they used to do. Muhsin Khan For all that they used to do. Yusuf Ali For all their deeds. Dr. Ghali Concerning whatever they were doing. |
| 15:94 | Transliteration FasdaAA bima tu/maruwaaAArid AAani almushrikeen Sahih International Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists. Muhsin Khan Therefore proclaim openly (Allah's Message Islamic Monotheism) that which you are commanded, and turn away from Al-Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, and disbelievers, etc. - see V.2:105). Yusuf Ali Therefore expound openly what thou art commanded, and turn away from those who join false gods with Allah. Dr. Ghali So profess openly what you have been commanded and veer away from the associators (Those who associate others with Allah)- |
| 15:95 | Transliteration Inna kafaynaka almustahzi-een Sahih International Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers Muhsin Khan Truly! We will suffice you against the scoffers. Yusuf Ali For sufficient are We unto thee against those who scoff,- Dr. Ghali Surely We suffice you against the mockers- |
| 15:96 | Transliteration Allatheena yajAAaloona maAAa Allahiilahan akhara fasawfa yaAAlamoon Sahih International Who make [equal] with Allah another deity. But they are going to know. Muhsin Khan Who set up along with Allah another ilah (god), they will come to know. Yusuf Ali Those who adopt, with Allah, another god: but soon will they come to know. Dr. Ghali Who make up with Allah another god; so they will eventually know. |
| 15:97 | Transliteration Walaqad naAAlamu annaka yadeequ sadrukabima yaqooloon Sahih International And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. Muhsin Khan Indeed, We know that your breast is straitened at what they say. Yusuf Ali We do indeed know how thy heart is distressed at what they say. Dr. Ghali And indeed We already know that, for you, your breast straitens by what they say. |
| 15:98 | Transliteration Fasabbih bihamdi rabbika wakunmina assajideen Sahih International So exalt [ Allah ] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him]. Muhsin Khan So glorify the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves (to Him). Yusuf Ali But celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and be of those who prostrate themselves in adoration. Dr. Ghali So extol with the praise of your Lord and be of the prostrating. |
| 15:99 | Transliteration WaAAbud rabbaka hattaya/tiyaka alyaqeen Sahih International And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death). Muhsin Khan And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death). Yusuf Ali And serve thy Lord until there come unto thee the Hour that is Certain. Dr. Ghali And worship your Lord until the Certitude comes up to you. |
