Muhsin Khan Say (O Muhammad SAW) Ruh-ul-Qudus [Jibrael (Gabriel)] has brought it (the Quran) down from your Lord with truth, that it may make firm and strengthen (the Faith of) those who believe and as a guidance and glad tidings to those who have submitted (to Allah as Muslims). Yusuf Ali Say, the Holy Spirit has brought the revelation from thy Lord in Truth, in order to strengthen those who believe, and as a Guide and Glad Tidings to Muslims. Dr. Ghali Say, "The Spirit of Holiness (i.e., the language) has been sending it down from your Lord with the Truth to make firm the ones who have believed and as a guidance and good tidings to Muslims." (i.e. those who surrender to Allah). | | 16:103 | Transliteration Walaqad naAAlamu annahum yaqooloona innamayuAAallimuhu basharun lisanu allathee yulhidoonailayhi aAAjamiyyun wahatha lisanun AAarabiyyunmubeen Sahih International And We certainly know that they say, "It is only a human being who teaches the Prophet." The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this Qur'an is [in] a clear Arabic language. Muhsin Khan And indeed We know that they (polytheists and pagans) say: "It is only a human being who teaches him (Muhammad SAW)." The tongue of the man they refer to is foreign, while this (the Quran) is a clear Arabic tongue. Yusuf Ali We know indeed that they say, "It is a man that teaches him." The tongue of him they wickedly point to is notably foreign, while this is Arabic, pure and clear. Dr. Ghali And indeed We already know that they say, "Surely only a mortal is teaching him." The tongue (i.e., the language) of him about whom they blaspheme is foreign, and this is an evident Arabic tongue. | | 16:104 | Transliteration Inna allatheena la yu/minoonabi-ayati Allahi la yahdeehimu Allahuwalahum AAathabun aleem Sahih International Indeed, those who do not believe in the verses of Allah - Allah will not guide them, and for them is a painful punishment. Muhsin Khan Verily! Those who believe not in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, Allah will not guide them and theirs will be a painful torment. Yusuf Ali Those who believe not in the Signs of Allah,- Allah will not guide them, and theirs will be a grievous Penalty. Dr. Ghali Surely the ones who do not believe in the signs of Allah, Allah will not guide them, and they will have a painful torment. | | 16:105 | Transliteration Innama yaftaree alkathibaallatheena la yu/minoona bi-ayati Allahiwaola-ika humu alkathiboon Sahih International They only invent falsehood who do not believe in the verses of Allah , and it is those who are the liars. Muhsin Khan It is only those who believe not in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, who fabricate falsehood, and it is they who are liars. Yusuf Ali It is those who believe not in the Signs of Allah, that forge falsehood: it is they who lie! Dr. Ghali Surely they who do not believe in the signs of Allah only fabricate lies, and those are they (who are) the liars. | | 16:106 | Transliteration Man kafara billahi minbaAAdi eemanihi illa man okriha waqalbuhu mutma-innunbil-eemani walakin man sharaha bilkufrisadran faAAalayhim ghadabun mina Allahiwalahum AAathabun AAatheem Sahih International Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah , and for them is a great punishment; Muhsin Khan Whoever disbelieved in Allah after his belief, except him who is forced thereto and whose heart is at rest with Faith but such as open their breasts to disbelief, on them is wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a great torment. Yusuf Ali Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith - but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty. Dr. Ghali Whoever has disbelieved in Allah even after his belief excepting him who has been compelled and his heart is (still) composed with belief-but whoever has his breast expanded in disbelief, then upon them is anger from Allah and they will have a tremendous torment. | | 16:107 | Transliteration Thalika bi-annahumu istahabbooalhayata addunya AAala al-akhiratiwaanna Allaha la yahdee alqawma alkafireen Sahih International That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. Muhsin Khan That is because they loved and preferred the life of this world over that of the Hereafter. And Allah guides not the people who disbelieve. Yusuf Ali This because they love the life of this world better than the Hereafter: and Allah will not guide those who reject Faith. Dr. Ghali That (is) for that they have shown more love for the present life (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this world) than for the Hereafter and (for) that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. | | 16:108 | Transliteration Ola-ika allatheena tabaAAaAllahu AAala quloobihim wasamAAihim waabsarihimwaola-ika humu alghafiloon Sahih International Those are the ones over whose hearts and hearing and vision Allah has sealed, and it is those who are the heedless. Muhsin Khan They are those upon whose hearts, hearing (ears) and sight (eyes) Allah has set a seal. And they are the heedless! Yusuf Ali Those are they whose hearts, ears, and eyes Allah has sealed up, and they take no heed. Dr. Ghali Those are they upon whose hearts Allah has stamped (i.e., impressed or set seal) and on their hearing and their be holdings; and those are the ones who are heedless. | | 16:109 | Transliteration La jarama annahum fee al-akhiratihumu alkhasiroon Sahih International Assuredly, it is they, in the Hereafter, who will be the losers. Muhsin Khan No doubt, in the Hereafter, they will be the losers. Yusuf Ali Without doubt, in the Hereafter they will perish. Dr. Ghali No question that in the Hereafter they are (the ones who are) the losers. | | 16:110 | Transliteration Thumma inna rabbaka lillatheena hajaroomin baAAdi ma futinoo thumma jahadoo wasabarooinna rabbaka min baAAdiha laghafoorun raheem Sahih International Then, indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled [to renounce their religion] and thereafter fought [for the cause of Allah ] and were patient - indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful Muhsin Khan Then, verily! Your Lord for those who emigrated after they had been put to trials and thereafter strove hard and fought (for the Cause of Allah) and were patient, verily, your Lord afterward is, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Yusuf Ali But verily thy Lord,- to those who leave their homes after trials and persecutions,- and who thereafter strive and fight for the faith and patiently persevere,- Thy Lord, after all this is oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. Dr. Ghali Thereafter surely your Lord ?to the ones who emigrated even after they had been persecuted, (Literally: were tempted) thereafter strove and endured patiently, surely your Lord, even after that, is indeed Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful. | | 16:111 | Transliteration Yawma ta/tee kullu nafsin tujadiluAAan nafsiha watuwaffa kullu nafsin maAAamilat wahum la yuthlamoon Sahih International On the Day when every soul will come disputing for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged. Muhsin Khan (Remember) the Day when every person will come up pleading for himself, and every one will be paid in full for what he did (good or evil, belief or disbelief in the life of this world) and they will not be dealt with unjustly. Yusuf Ali One Day every soul will come up struggling for itself, and every soul will be recompensed (fully) for all its actions, and none will be unjustly dealt with. Dr. Ghali The Day that every self will come up disputing for it self, and every self will be paid in full for what it has done, and they will not be done any injustice. | | 16:112 | Transliteration Wadaraba Allahu mathalanqaryatan kanat aminatan mutma-innatanya/teeha rizquha raghadan min kulli makaninfakafarat bi-anAAumi Allahi faathaqaha Allahulibasa aljooAAi walkhawfi bima kanooyasnaAAoon Sahih International And Allah presents an example: a city which was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allah . So Allah made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been doing. Muhsin Khan And Allah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah), that dwelt secure and well content; its provision coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the Favours of Allah (with ungratefulness). So Allah made it taste the extreme of hunger (famine) and fear, because of that (evil, i.e. denying Prophet Muhammad SAW) which they (its people) used to do. Yusuf Ali Allah sets forth a Parable: a city enjoying security and quiet, abundantly supplied with sustenance from every place: Yet was it ungrateful for the favours of Allah: so Allah made it taste of hunger and terror (in extremes) (closing in on it) like a garment (from every side), because of the (evil) which (its people) wrought. Dr. Ghali And Allah has struck a similitude: a town that was secure (and) well composed, its provision coming up to it opulently from every place, then it disbelieved (i.e., they were unthankful) in the amenities of Allah; so Allah made it taste the garment of hunger and fear for the things they were working out (i.e., doing). | | 16:113 | Transliteration Walaqad jaahum rasoolun minhum fakaththaboohufaakhathahumu alAAathabu wahum thalimoon Sahih International And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers. Muhsin Khan And verily, there had come unto them a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, but they denied him, so the torment overtook them while they were Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). Yusuf Ali And there came to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they falsely rejected him; so the Wrath seized them even in the midst of their iniquities. Dr. Ghali And indeed a Messenger from among them already came to them, then they cried him lies; so the torment took them (away) and they were unjust. | | 16:114 | Transliteration Fakuloo mimma razaqakumu Allahuhalalan tayyiban washkuroo niAAmataAllahi in kuntum iyyahu taAAbudoon Sahih International Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah , if it is [indeed] Him that you worship. Muhsin Khan So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you. And be grateful for the Graces of Allah, if it is He Whom you worship. Yusuf Ali So eat of the sustenance which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good; and be grateful for the favours of Allah, if it is He Whom ye serve. Dr. Ghali So eat of what Allah has provided you, lawfully good, and thank (Him) for the favor of Allah, in case it be Him only that you do worship. | | 16:115 | Transliteration Innama harrama AAalaykumualmaytata waddama walahma alkhinzeeri wamaohilla lighayri Allahi bihi famani idturra ghayra baghinwala AAadin fa-inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem Sahih International He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Muhsin Khan He has forbidden you only Al-Maytatah (meat of a dead animal), blood, the flesh of swine, and any animal which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah (or has been slaughtered for idols etc. or on which Allah's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, and not transgressing, then, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Yusuf Ali He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Dr. Ghali Surely He has prohibited for you only carrion, (i.e., deal meat) and blood, and the flesh of swine, and what has been acclaimed to other than Allah. Yet whoever is constrained, without being inequitable or aggressive, then surely Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful. | | 16:116 | Transliteration Wala taqooloo lima tasifualsinatukumu alkathiba hatha halalunwahatha haramun litaftaroo AAala Allahialkathiba inna allatheena yaftaroona AAalaAllahi alkathiba la yuflihoon Sahih International And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood about Allah . Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed. Muhsin Khan And say not concerning that which your tongues put forth falsely: "This is lawful and this is forbidden," so as to invent lies against Allah. Verily, those who invent lies against Allah will never prosper. Yusuf Ali But say not - for any false thing that your tongues may put forth,- "This is lawful, and this is forbidden," so as to ascribe false things to Allah. For those who ascribe false things to Allah, will never prosper. Dr. Ghali And do not say, as to what your tongues describe lying, (i.e., falsely, livingly) "This is lawful and this is prohibited, " so you may fabricate lies against Allah; surely the ones who fabricate lies against Allah will not prosper. | | 16:117 | Transliteration MataAAun qaleelun walahum AAathabunaleem Sahih International [It is but] a brief enjoyment, and they will have a painful punishment. Muhsin Khan A passing brief enjoyment (will be theirs), but they will have a painful torment. Yusuf Ali (In such falsehood) is but a paltry profit; but they will have a most grievous Penalty. Dr. Ghali A little enjoyment and they will have a painful torment. | | 16:118 | Transliteration WaAAala allatheena hadooharramna ma qasasnaAAalayka min qablu wama thalamnahumwalakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoon Sahih International And to those who are Jews We have prohibited that which We related to you before. And We did not wrong them [thereby], but they were wronging themselves. Muhsin Khan And unto those who are Jews, We have forbidden such things as We have mentioned to you (O Muhammad SAW) before [in Surat-Al-An'am, (The Cattle), see Verse 6:146]. And We wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves. Yusuf Ali To the Jews We prohibited such things as We have mentioned to thee before: We did them no wrong, but they were used to doing wrong to themselves. Dr. Ghali And for the ones who Judaized, (i.e., adopt Judaism) We have prohibited for them what we narrated to you earlier and in no way did We do them an injustice, but to themselves they were doing injustice. | | 16:119 | Transliteration Thumma inna rabbaka lillatheenaAAamiloo assoo-a bijahalatin thumma taboomin baAAdi thalika waaslahoo inna rabbakamin baAAdiha laghafoorun raheem Sahih International Then, indeed your Lord, to those who have done wrong out of ignorance and then repent after that and correct themselves - indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful. Muhsin Khan Then, verily! Your Lord for those who do evil (commit sins and are disobedient to Allah) in ignorance and afterward repent and do righteous deeds, verily, your Lord thereafter, (to such) is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Yusuf Ali But verily thy Lord,- to those who do wrong in ignorance, but who thereafter repent and make amends,- thy Lord, after all this, is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Dr. Ghali Thereafter, surely your Lord ?? to the ones who do odious (deeds) in ignorance, thereafter repent ever after that and act righteously-surely your Lord after that is indeed Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful. | | 16:120 | Transliteration Inna ibraheema kana ommatan qanitanlillahi haneefan walam yaku mina almushrikeen Sahih International Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah , inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah . Muhsin Khan Verily, Ibrahim (Abraham) was an Ummah (a leader having all the good righteous qualities), or a nation, obedient to Allah, Hanifa (i.e. to worship none but Allah), and he was not one of those who were Al-Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and those who joined partners with Allah). Yusuf Ali Abraham was indeed a model, devoutly obedient to Allah, (and) true in Faith, and he joined not gods with Allah: Dr. Ghali Surely, Ibrahim (Abraham) was a nation, (i.e., a leader,Imam) devout to Allah, unswervingly upright, and he was not of the associators, (Those who associate others with Allah) | | 16:121 | Transliteration Shakiran li-anAAumihi ijtabahuwahadahu ila siratin mustaqeem Sahih International [He was] grateful for His favors. Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path. Muhsin Khan (He was) thankful for His (Allah's) Graces. He (Allah) chose him (as an intimate friend) and guided him to a Straight Path (Islamic Monotheism, neither Judaism nor Christianity). Yusuf Ali He showed his gratitude for the favours of Allah, who chose him, and guided him to a Straight Way. Dr. Ghali Thankful for His amenities. He selected him and He guided him to a straight Path. | | 16:122 | Transliteration Waataynahu fee addunyahasanatan wa-innahu fee al-akhirati lamina assaliheen Sahih International And We gave him good in this world, and indeed, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. Muhsin Khan And We gave him good in this world, and in the Hereafter he shall be of the righteous. Yusuf Ali And We gave him Good in this world, and he will be, in the Hereafter, in the ranks of the Righteous. Dr. Ghali And We brought him in the present (life) (Literally: the lowly "life", i.e., the life of this world) a fair (reward), and surely in the Hereafter he will indeed be among the righteous. | | 16:123 | Transliteration Thumma awhayna ilayka aniittabiAA millata ibraheema haneefan wama kanamina almushrikeen Sahih International Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allah . Muhsin Khan Then, We have inspired you (O Muhammad SAW saying): "Follow the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism - to worship none but Allah) and he was not of the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers, etc.). Yusuf Ali So We have taught thee the inspired (Message), "Follow the ways of Abraham the True in Faith, and he joined not gods with Allah." Dr. Ghali Thereafter We revealed to you, (saying): "Closely follow the creed of Ibrahim, (Abraham) unswervingly upright, and in no way was he one of the associators." (Those who associate others with Allah) | | 16:124 | Transliteration Innama juAAila assabtu AAalaallatheena ikhtalafoo feehi wa-inna rabbaka layahkumubaynahum yawma alqiyamati feema kanoo feehiyakhtalifoon Sahih International The sabbath was only appointed for those who differed over it. And indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ. Muhsin Khan The Sabbath was only prescribed for those who differed concerning it, and verily, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about that wherein they used to differ. Yusuf Ali The Sabbath was only made (strict) for those who disagreed (as to its observance); But Allah will judge between them on the Day of Judgment, as to their differences. Dr. Ghali Surely the Sabbath was made only for the ones who differed about it; and surely your Lord will indeed judge between them on the Day of the Resurrection concerning (the things) about which they used to differ. | | 16:125 | Transliteration OdAAu ila sabeeli rabbika bilhikmatiwalmawAAithati alhasanati wajadilhumbillatee hiya ahsanu inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamubiman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bilmuhtadeen Sahih International Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided. Muhsin Khan Invite (mankind, O Muhammad SAW) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Quran) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided. Yusuf Ali Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance. Dr. Ghali Call (This is addressed to the Prophet) to the way of your Lord with wisdom and fair admonition, and dispute with them in the way (which is) fairest. Surely your Lord is The Best Knower of the ones who have erred away from His way, and He is The Best Knower of the right-guided. | | 16:126 | Transliteration Wa-in AAaqabtum faAAaqiboobimithli ma AAooqibtum bihi wala-in sabartum lahuwakhayrun lissabireen Sahih International And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient. Muhsin Khan And if you punish (your enemy, O you believers in the Oneness of Allah), then punish them with the like of that with which you were afflicted. But if you endure patiently, verily, it is better for As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). Yusuf Ali And if ye do catch them out, catch them out no worse than they catch you out: But if ye show patience, that is indeed the best (course) for those who are patient. Dr. Ghali And in case you (This is addressed to all believers) punish, then punish with the like of that wherewith you were punished; and indeed in case you endure patiently, indeed it is more charitable of the patient. | | 16:127 | Transliteration Wasbir wama sabrukailla billahi wala tahzanAAalayhim wala taku fee dayqin mimmayamkuroon Sahih International And be patient, [O Muhammad], and your patience is not but through Allah . And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire. Muhsin Khan And endure you patiently (O Muhammad SAW), your patience is not but from Allah. And grieve not over them (polytheists and pagans, etc.), and be not distressed because of what they plot. Yusuf Ali And do thou be patient, for thy patience is but from Allah; nor grieve over them: and distress not thyself because of their plots. Dr. Ghali And (endure) patiently, and in no way is your patience with the help of anyone except with Allah. And do not grieve for them, nor be straitened for whatever they scheme. | | 16:128 | Transliteration Inna Allaha maAAa allatheenaittaqaw wallatheena hum muhsinoon Sahih International Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good. Muhsin Khan Truly, Allah is with those who fear Him (keep their duty unto Him), and those who are Muhsinun (good-doers, - see the footnote of V.9:120). Yusuf Ali For Allah is with those who restrain themselves, and those who do good. Dr. Ghali Surely Allah is with the ones who have been pious and the ones who are fair-doers. |
