Yusuf Ali Those who humble themselves in their prayers; Dr. Ghali The ones who in their prayer are submissive. | | 23:3 | Transliteration Wallatheena hum AAani allaghwimuAAridoon Sahih International And they who turn away from ill speech Muhsin Khan And those who turn away from Al-Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk, falsehood, and all that Allah has forbidden). Yusuf Ali Who avoid vain talk; Dr. Ghali And the ones who from idle talk are veering away. | | 23:4 | Transliteration Wallatheena hum lizzakatifaAAiloon Sahih International And they who are observant of zakah Muhsin Khan And those who pay the Zakat . Yusuf Ali Who are active in deeds of charity; Dr. Ghali And the ones who at giving the Zakat (i.e., paying the poor-dues) are active. (Literally: are performers) | | 23:5 | Transliteration Wallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoon Sahih International And they who guard their private parts Muhsin Khan And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts) Yusuf Ali Who abstain from sex, Dr. Ghali And the ones who are preservers of their private parts- | | 23:6 | Transliteration Illa AAala azwajihim awma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeen Sahih International Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - Muhsin Khan Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame; Yusuf Ali Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame, Dr. Ghali Except from their spouses and what their right hands possess, then surely they are not blameworthy. (literally: other than being blameworthy) | | 23:7 | Transliteration Famani ibtagha waraa thalikafaola-ika humu alAAadoon Sahih International But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors - Muhsin Khan But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors; Yusuf Ali But those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;- Dr. Ghali Then whoever inequitably seeks beyond that, then those are the aggressors themselves- | | 23:8 | Transliteration Wallatheena hum li-amanatihimwaAAahdihim raAAoon Sahih International And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive Muhsin Khan Those who are faithfully true to their Amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts etc.) and to their covenants; Yusuf Ali Those who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants; Dr. Ghali And they are the ones who pay heed to their deposits and their covenant. | | 23:9 | Transliteration Wallatheena hum AAala salawatihimyuhafithoon Sahih International And they who carefully maintain their prayers - Muhsin Khan And those who strictly guard their (five compulsory congregational) Salawat (prayers) (at their fixed stated hours). Yusuf Ali And who (strictly) guard their prayers;- Dr. Ghali And they are the ones who preserve their prayers. | | 23:10 | Transliteration Ola-ika humu alwarithoon Sahih International Those are the inheritors Muhsin Khan These are indeed the inheritors. Yusuf Ali These will be the heirs, Dr. Ghali They are those (who are) the inheritors. | | 23:11 | Transliteration Allatheena yarithoona alfirdawsa humfeeha khalidoon Sahih International Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally. Muhsin Khan Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever. Yusuf Ali Who will inherit Paradise: they will dwell therein (for ever). Dr. Ghali Who will inherit Paradise. They are therein eternally (abiding). | | 23:12 | Transliteration Walaqad khalaqna al-insana minsulalatin min teen Sahih International And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay. Muhsin Khan And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth). Yusuf Ali Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay); Dr. Ghali And indeed We already created man of an extraction of clay. | | 23:13 | Transliteration Thumma jaAAalnahu nutfatan feeqararin makeen Sahih International Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Muhsin Khan Thereafter We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge) (and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman). Yusuf Ali Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed; Dr. Ghali Thereafter We made him a sperm-drop, in an established residence. | | 23:14 | Transliteration Thumma khalaqna annutfataAAalaqatan fakhalaqna alAAalaqata mudghatanfakhalaqna almudghata AAithamanfakasawna alAAithama lahmanthumma ansha/nahu khalqan akhara fatabarakaAllahu ahsanu alkhaliqeen Sahih International Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah , the best of creators. Muhsin Khan Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators. Yusuf Ali Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create! Dr. Ghali Thereafter We created the sperm-drop into a clot, (Or: embryo) then We created the clot into a chewed up morsel, then We created the chewed up morsel into bones, then We dressed the bones (in) flesh; thereafter We brought him into being as another creation. So Supremely Blessed be Allah, The Fairest of creators. | | 23:15 | Transliteration Thumma innakum baAAda thalikalamayyitoon Sahih International Then indeed, after that you are to die. Muhsin Khan After that, surely, you will die. Yusuf Ali After that, at length ye will die Dr. Ghali Thereafter surely after that you will indeed die (Literally: be dead) | | 23:16 | Transliteration Thumma innakum yawma alqiyamatitubAAathoon Sahih International Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected. Muhsin Khan Then (again), surely, you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection. Yusuf Ali Again, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up. Dr. Ghali Thereafter on the Day of the Resurrection you will surely be made to rise again. | | 23:17 | Transliteration Walaqad khalaqna fawqakum sabAAa tara-iqawama kunna AAani alkhalqi ghafileen Sahih International And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware. Muhsin Khan And indeed We have created above you seven heavens (one over the other), and We are never unaware of the creation. Yusuf Ali And We have made, above you, seven tracts; and We are never unmindful of (our) Creation. Dr. Ghali And indeed We already created above you seven roads; and in no way have We been heedless of creation. | | 23:18 | Transliteration Waanzalna mina assama-imaan biqadarin faaskannahu fee al-ardiwa-inna AAala thahabin bihi laqadiroon Sahih International And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away. Muhsin Khan And We sent down from the sky water (rain) in (due) measure, and We gave it lodging in the earth, and verily, We are Able to take it away. Yusuf Ali And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease). Dr. Ghali And We have sent down from the heaven water in a determined estimate, then We made it to dwell in the earth; and surely We are indeed (the) Determiners over putting it away. | | 23:19 | Transliteration Faansha/na lakum bihi jannatinmin nakheelin waaAAnabin lakum feeha fawakihukatheeratun waminha ta/kuloon Sahih International And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat. Muhsin Khan Then We brought forth for you therewith gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein is much fruit for you, and whereof you eat. Yusuf Ali With it We grow for you gardens of date-palms and vines: in them have ye abundant fruits: and of them ye eat (and have enjoyment),- Dr. Ghali So We have brought into being for you therewith gardens of palms and vineyards; in them you have many fruits for you, and of them you eat. | | 23:20 | Transliteration Washajaratan takhruju min toori saynaatanbutu bidduhni wasibghin lilakileen Sahih International And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat. Muhsin Khan And a tree (olive) that springs forth from Mount Sinai, that grows oil, and (it is a) relish for the eaters. Yusuf Ali Also a tree springing out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil, and relish for those who use it for food. Dr. Ghali And a tree that comes out (Literally: goes out) from At-Tûr of SaynaÉ (Mount Sinai) that grows fats (i.e., oil) and seasoning for (the) eaters. | | 23:21 | Transliteration Wa-inna lakum fee al-anAAamilaAAibratan nusqeekum mimma fee butoonihawalakum feeha manafiAAu katheeratun waminhata/kuloon Sahih International And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat. Muhsin Khan And Verily! In the cattle there is indeed a lesson for you. We give you to drink (milk) of that which is in their bellies. And there are, in them, numerous (other) benefits for you, and of them you eat. Yusuf Ali And in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: from within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye eat; Dr. Ghali And surely in the cattle (ÉAncam includes cattle, camels, sheep and goats) there is indeed a lesson for you; We make you to drink of what is in their bellies, and many profits (Or: uses) there are in them for you, and of them you eat. | | 23:22 | Transliteration WaAAalayha waAAala alfulki tuhmaloon Sahih International And upon them and on ships you are carried. Muhsin Khan And on them, and on ships you are carried. Yusuf Ali An on them, as well as in slips, ye side. Dr. Ghali And upon them, and on the ships you are carried. | | 23:23 | Transliteration Walaqad arsalna noohan ilaqawmihi faqala ya qawmi oAAbudoo Allaha malakum min ilahin ghayruhu afala tattaqoon Sahih International And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, "O my people, worship Allah ; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?" Muhsin Khan And indeed We sent Nuh (Noah) to his people, and he said: "O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him (Islamic Monotheism). Will you not then be afraid (of Him i.e. of His Punishment because of worshipping others besides Him)?" Yusuf Ali (Further, We sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent Noah to his people: He said, "O my people! worship Allah! Ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?" Dr. Ghali And indeed We already sent Nuh (Noah) to his people. So he said, "O my people, worship Allah! In no way do you have any god other than He. Will you not then have piety?" | | 23:24 | Transliteration Faqala almalao allatheenakafaroo min qawmihi ma hatha illa basharunmithlukum yureedu an yatafaddala AAalaykum walaw shaaAllahu laanzala mala-ikatan ma samiAAnabihatha fee aba-ina al-awwaleen Sahih International But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allah had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers. Muhsin Khan But the chiefs of those who disbelieved among his people said: "He is no more than a human being like you, he seeks to make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing among our fathers of old. Yusuf Ali The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old." Dr. Ghali Then said the chiefs who disbelieved among his people, "In no way is this anything except a mortal like yourselves, who would like to be graced with (superiority) (Literally: assume graciousness) over you. And if Allah had (so) decided, He would indeed have sent down Angels. In no way did we hear of this among our earliest fathers. | | 23:25 | Transliteration In huwa illa rajulun bihi jinnatunfatarabbasoo bihi hatta heen Sahih International He is not but a man possessed with madness, so wait concerning him for a time." Muhsin Khan "He is only a man in whom is madness, so wait for him a while." Yusuf Ali (And some said): "He is only a man possessed: wait (and have patience) with him for a time." Dr. Ghali Decidedly he is nothing except a man (seized) by a madness, so wait on him for a while (of time)." | | 23:26 | Transliteration Qala rabbi onsurnee bimakaththaboon Sahih International [Noah] said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me." Muhsin Khan [Nuh (Noah)] said: "O my Lord! Help me because they deny me." Yusuf Ali (Noah) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood!" Dr. Ghali He said, "Lord! Vindicate me for that they cry me lies." | | 23:27 | Transliteration Faawhayna ilayhi ani isnaAAialfulka bi-aAAyunina wawahyina fa-ithajaa amruna wafara attannooru faslukfeeha min kullin zawjayni ithnayni waahlaka illaman sabaqa AAalayhi alqawlu minhum wala tukhatibneefee allatheena thalamoo innahum mughraqoon Sahih International So We inspired to him, "Construct the ship under Our observation, and Our inspiration, and when Our command comes and the oven overflows, put into the ship from each [creature] two mates and your family, except those for whom the decree [of destruction] has proceeded. And do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned. Muhsin Khan So We inspired him (saying): "Construct the ship under Our Eyes and under Our Revelation (guidance). Then, when Our Command comes, and the oven gushes forth water, take on board of each kind two (male and female), and your family, except those thereof against whom the Word has already gone forth. And address Me not in favour of those who have done wrong. Verily, they are to be drowned. Yusuf Ali So We inspired him (with this message): "Construct the Ark within Our sight and under Our guidance: then when comes Our Command, and the fountains of the earth gush forth, take thou on board pairs of every species, male and female, and thy family- except those of them against whom the Word has already gone forth: And address Me not in favour of the wrong-doers; for they shall be drowned (in the Flood). Dr. Ghali So We revealed to him, (saying), "Work the ship under Our Eyes and Our Revelation; so, when Our Command comes and the oven boils over, then dispatch therein two pairs (Or: spouses) of every kind and your family- except for him against whom the Saying has already gone before. And do not address Me concerning the ones who have done injustice; surely they will be drowned. | | 23:28 | Transliteration Fa-itha istawayta anta waman maAAakaAAala alfulki faquli alhamdu lillahi allatheenajjana mina alqawmi aththalimeen Sahih International And when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, 'Praise to Allah who has saved us form the wrongdoing people.' Muhsin Khan And when you have embarked on the ship, you and whoever is with you, then say: "All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has saved us from the people who are Zalimun (i.e. oppressors, wrong-doers, polytheists, those who join others in worship with Allah, etc.). Yusuf Ali And when thou hast embarked on the Ark - thou and those with thee,- say: "Praise be to Allah, Who has saved us from the people who do wrong." Dr. Ghali So, when you have leveled yourself on the ship (i.e., boarded the ship) and the ones with you, then say, 'Praise be to Allah, Who has safely delivered us from the unjust people. | | 23:29 | Transliteration Waqul rabbi anzilnee munzalan mubarakanwaanta khayru almunzileen Sahih International And say, 'My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].' " Muhsin Khan And say: "My Lord! Cause me to land at a blessed landing-place, for You are the Best of those who bring to land." Yusuf Ali And say: "O my Lord! enable me to disembark with thy blessing: for Thou art the Best to enable (us) to disembark." Dr. Ghali And say, "Lord! Cause me to descend (or: to ashore) a blessed descent, and You are The Most Charitable of hosts". | | 23:30 | Transliteration Inna fee thalika laayatinwa-in kunna lamubtaleen Sahih International Indeed in that are signs, and indeed, We are ever testing [Our servants]. Muhsin Khan Verily, in this [what We did as regards drowning of the people of Nuh (Noah)], there are indeed Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc. for men to understand), for sure We are ever putting (men) to the test. Yusuf Ali Verily in this there are Signs (for men to understand); (thus) do We try (men). Dr. Ghali Surely in that are indeed signs, and decidedly We are (always) indeed trying (mankind). | | 23:31 | Transliteration Thumma ansha/na min baAAdihim qarnan akhareen Sahih International Then We produced after them a generation of others. Muhsin Khan Then, after them, We created another generation. Yusuf Ali Then We raised after them another generation. Dr. Ghali Thereafter even after them, We brought into being another generation. | | 23:32 | Transliteration Faarsalna feehim rasoolan minhum anioAAbudoo Allaha ma lakum min ilahin ghayruhuafala tattaqoon Sahih International And We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allah ; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?" Muhsin Khan And We sent to them a Messenger from among themselves (saying): "Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him. Will you not then be afraid (of Him i.e. of His Punishment because of worshipping others besides Him)?" Yusuf Ali And We sent to them a messenger from among themselves, (saying), "Worship Allah! ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?" Dr. Ghali So We sent among them a Messenger of themselves, (saying), "Worship Allah! In no way do you have any other god than He. Will you not then have piety?" | | 23:33 | Transliteration Waqala almalao min qawmihi allatheenakafaroo wakaththaboo biliqa-i al-akhiratiwaatrafnahum fee alhayati addunyama hatha illa basharun mithlukum ya/kulumimma ta/kuloona minhu wayashrabu mimma tashraboon Sahih International And the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the worldly life said, "This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink. Muhsin Khan And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and to whom We had given the luxuries and comforts of this life, said: "He is no more than a human being like you, he eats of that which you eat, and drinks of what you drink. Yusuf Ali And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and on whom We had bestowed the good things of this life, said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: he eats of that of which ye eat, and drinks of what ye drink. Dr. Ghali And said the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and cried lies to the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had caused to live in luxury in the present life, (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this word) "In no way is this anything except a mortal like yourselves; he eats of whatever you eat and drinks of whatever you drink. | | 23:34 | Transliteration Wala-in ataAAtum basharan mithlakuminnakum ithan lakhasiroon Sahih International And if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers. Muhsin Khan "If you were to obey a human being like yourselves, then verily! You indeed would be losers. Yusuf Ali "If ye obey a man like yourselves, behold, it is certain ye will be lost. Dr. Ghali And indeed in case you obey a mortal like yourselves, lo, surely you will indeed be the losers. | | 23:35 | Transliteration AyaAAidukum annakum itha mittumwakuntum turaban waAAithaman annakummukhrajoon Sahih International Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]? Muhsin Khan "Does he promise you that when you have died and have become dust and bones, you shall come out alive (resurrected)? Yusuf Ali "Does he promise that when ye die and become dust and bones, ye shall be brought forth (again)? Dr. Ghali Does he promise you that when you die and are dust and bones, you will be brought out (of the graves)? | | 23:36 | Transliteration Hayhata hayhata limatooAAadoon Sahih International How far, how far, is that which you are promised. Muhsin Khan "Far, very far is that which you are promised. Yusuf Ali "Far, very far is that which ye are promised! Dr. Ghali Away, away with whatever you are promised! | | 23:37 | Transliteration In hiya illa hayatunaaddunya namootu wanahya wamanahnu bimabAAootheen Sahih International Life is not but our worldly life - we die and live, but we will not be resurrected. Muhsin Khan "There is nothing but our life of this world! We die and we live! And we are not going to be resurrected! Yusuf Ali "There is nothing but our life in this world! We shall die and we live! But we shall never be raised up again! Dr. Ghali Decidedly there is nothing except our present life. (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this word) We die and we live, and in no way will we be made to rise again. | | 23:38 | Transliteration In huwa illa rajulun iftaraAAala Allahi kathiban wama nahnulahu bimu/mineen Sahih International He is not but a man who has invented a lie about Allah , and we will not believe him." Muhsin Khan "He is only a man who has invented a lie against Allah, but we are not going to believe in him." Yusuf Ali "He is only a man who invents a lie against Allah, but we are not the ones to believe in him!" Dr. Ghali Decidedly he is nothing except a man who has fabricated against Allah a lie, and in no way will we (become) believers to him." | | 23:39 | Transliteration Qala rabbi onsurnee bimakaththaboon Sahih International He said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me." Muhsin Khan He said: "O my Lord! Help me because they deny me." Yusuf Ali (The prophet) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood." Dr. Ghali He said, "Lord! Vindicate me for that they cry me lies." | | 23:40 | Transliteration Qala AAamma qaleelin layusbihunnanadimeen Sahih International [ Allah ] said, "After a little, they will surely become regretful." Muhsin Khan (Allah) said: "In a little while, they are sure to be regretful." Yusuf Ali (Allah) said: "In but a little while, they are sure to be sorry!" Dr. Ghali Said He, "In a little while indeed they will definitely become remorseful." | | 23:41 | Transliteration Faakhathat-humu assayhatubilhaqqi fajaAAalnahum ghuthaanfabuAAdan lilqawmi aththalimeen Sahih International So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people. Muhsin Khan So As-Saihah (torment - awful cry, etc.) overtook them with justice, and We made them as rubbish of dead plants. So away with the people who are Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, disobedient to His Messengers, etc.). Yusuf Ali Then the Blast overtook them with justice, and We made them as rubbish of dead leaves (floating on the stream of Time)! So away with the people who do wrong! Dr. Ghali So the Shout took them (away) with the truth, then We made them (as) stubble; so far away (are gone) the unjust people! | | 23:42 | Transliteration Thumma ansha/na min baAAdihimquroonan akhareen Sahih International Then We produced after them other generations. Muhsin Khan Then, after them, We created other generations. Yusuf Ali Then We raised after them other generations. Dr. Ghali Thereafter even after them, We brought into being other generations. | | 23:43 | Transliteration Ma tasbiqu min ommatin ajalahawama yasta/khiroon Sahih International No nation will precede its time [of termination], nor will they remain [thereafter]. Muhsin Khan No nation can anticipate their term, nor can they delay it. Yusuf Ali No people can hasten their term, nor can they delay (it). Dr. Ghali In no way does any nation outstrip its term, and in no way are they able to postpone. | | 23:44 | Transliteration Thumma arsalna rusulana tatrakulla ma jaa ommatan rasooluha kaththaboohufaatbaAAna baAAdahum baAAdan wajaAAalnahumahadeetha fabuAAdan liqawmin la yu/minoon Sahih International Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe. Muhsin Khan Then We sent Our Messengers in succession, every time there came to a nation their Messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another (to destruction), and We made them as Ahadith (the true stories for mankind to learn a lesson from them). So away with a people who believe not. Yusuf Ali Then sent We our messengers in succession: every time there came to a people their messenger, they accused him of falsehood: so We made them follow each other (in punishment): We made them as a tale (that is told): So away with a people that will not believe! Dr. Ghali Thereafter we sent Our Messengers intermittently. Whenever its Messenger came to a nation, they cried lies to him. Muhsin Khan To Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his chiefs, but they behaved insolently and they were people self-exalting (by disobeying their Lord, and exalting themselves over and above the Messenger of Allah). Yusuf Ali To Pharaoh and his Chiefs: But these behaved insolently: they were an arrogant people. Dr. Ghali To Firaawn (Pharaoh) and his chiefs. Yet they waxed proud, and they were an exalted people. | | 23:47 | Transliteration Faqaloo anu/minu libasharayni mithlinawaqawmuhuma lana AAabidoon Sahih International They said, "Should we believe two men like ourselves while their people are for us in servitude?" Muhsin Khan They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves, and their people are obedient to us with humility (and we use them to serve us as we like)." Yusuf Ali They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves? And their people are subject to us!" Dr. Ghali So they said, "Shall we believe two mortals like ourselves, and their people are our worshipers?" | | 23:48 | Transliteration Fakaththaboohuma fakanoomina almuhlakeen Sahih International So they denied them and were of those destroyed. Muhsin Khan So they denied them both [Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)] and became of those who were destroyed. Yusuf Ali So they accused them of falsehood, and they became of those who were destroyed. Dr. Ghali Then they cried lies to them (both); so they were among the perished. | | 23:49 | Transliteration Walaqad atayna moosaalkitaba laAAallahum yahtadoon Sahih International And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture that perhaps they would be guided. Muhsin Khan And indeed We gave Musa (Moses) the Scripture, that they may be guided. Yusuf Ali And We gave Moses the Book, in order that they might receive guidance. Dr. Ghali And indeed We already brought M?s'a the Book, that possibly they would be (rightly) guided. | | 23.50 | Transliteration WajaAAalna ibna maryama waommahu ayatanwaawaynahuma ila rabwatin thatiqararin wamaAAeen Sahih International And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water. Muhsin Khan And We made the son of Maryam (Mary) and his mother as a sign, And We gave them refuge on high ground, a place of rest, security and flowing streams. Yusuf Ali And We made the son of Mary and his mother as a Sign: We gave them both shelter on high ground, affording rest and security and furnished with springs. Dr. Ghali And We made Maryam's (Mary's) son and his mother a sign, and gave an abode to (both of) them upon a mound, with (Literally: owing, comprising) a (refreshing) residence and a profuse (spring). | | 23:51 | Transliteration Ya ayyuha arrusulukuloo mina attayyibati waAAmaloo salihaninnee bima taAAmaloona AAaleem Sahih International [ Allah said], "O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed, I, of what you do, am Knowing. Muhsin Khan O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Taiyibat [all kinds of Halal (legal) foods which Allah has made legal (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.], and do righteous deeds. Verily! I am Well-Acquainted with what you do. Yusuf Ali O ye messengers! enjoy (all) things good and pure, and work righteousness: for I am well-acquainted with (all) that ye do. Dr. Ghali "O you the Messengers, eat of the good things, and do righteousness; surely I am Ever-Knowing of whatever you do. | | 23:52 | Transliteration Wa-inna hathihi ommatukum ommatan wahidatanwaana rabbukum fattaqoon Sahih International And indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so fear Me." Muhsin Khan And verily! This your religion (of Islamic Monotheism) is one religion, and I am your Lord, so keep your duty to Me. Yusuf Ali And verily this Brotherhood of yours is a single Brotherhood, and I am your Lord and Cherisher: therefore fear Me (and no other). Dr. Ghali And surely this nation of yours is one nation, and I am your Lord; so have piety towards Me." | | 23:53 | Transliteration FataqattaAAoo amrahum baynahumzuburan kullu hizbin bima ladayhim farihoon Sahih International But the people divided their religion among them into sects - each faction, in what it has, rejoicing. Muhsin Khan But they (men) have broken their religion among them into sects, each group rejoicing in its belief. Yusuf Ali But people have cut off their affair (of unity), between them, into sects: each party rejoices in that which is with itself. Dr. Ghali Then they cut up their Command among themselves into denominations, (i.e., differed about the command of Allah) each party exulting with whatever they had close to them. (i.e., their tenets) | | 23:54 | Transliteration Fatharhum fee ghamratihim hattaheen Sahih International So leave them in their confusion for a time. Muhsin Khan So leave them in their error for a time. Yusuf Ali But leave them in their confused ignorance for a time. Rather, they do not perceive. Muhsin Khan We hasten unto them with good things (in this worldly life so that they will have no share of good things in the Hereafter)? Nay, but they perceive not. Yusuf Ali We would hasten them on in every good? Nay, they do not understand. Dr. Ghali We (provide them) swiftly with charitable (benefits)? Those who live in awe for fear of their Lord; Yusuf Ali Verily those who live in awe for fear of their Lord; Dr. Ghali Surely the ones who are (themselves) timorous in apprehension of their Lord. | | 23:58 | Transliteration Wallatheena hum bi-ayatirabbihim yu/minoon Sahih International And they who believe in the signs of their Lord Muhsin Khan And those who believe in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord, Yusuf Ali Those who believe in the Signs of their Lord; Dr. Ghali And the ones who (themselves) believe in the signs of their Lord. | | 23:59 | Transliteration Wallatheena hum birabbihim layushrikoon Sahih International And they who do not associate anything with their Lord Muhsin Khan And those who join not anyone (in worship) as partners with their Lord; Yusuf Ali Those who join not (in worship) partners with their Lord; Dr. Ghali And the ones who (themselves) do not associate anything with their Lord. | | 23:60 | Transliteration Wallatheena yu/toona maataw waquloobuhum wajilatun annahum ila rabbihim rajiAAoon Sahih International And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord - Muhsin Khan And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning). Yusuf Ali And those who dispense their charity with their hearts full of fear, because they will return to their Lord;- Dr. Ghali And the ones who bring whatever they bring with hearts tremulous that they are returning to their Lord. | | 23:61 | Transliteration Ola-ika yusariAAoona feealkhayrati wahum laha sabiqoon Sahih International It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein. Muhsin Khan It is these who race for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salat (prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on]. Yusuf Ali It is these who hasten in every good work, and these who are foremost in them. Dr. Ghali Those (come) swiftly with charitable (deeds), and they are outstrippers to them. | | 23:62 | Transliteration Wala nukallifu nafsan illawusAAaha waladayna kitabun yantiqu bilhaqqiwahum la yuthlamoon Sahih International And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged. Muhsin Khan And We tax not any person except according to his capacity, and with Us is a Record which speaks the truth, and they will not be wronged. Yusuf Ali On no soul do We place a burden greater than it can bear: before Us is a record which clearly shows the truth: they will never be wronged. Dr. Ghali And We do not charge any self except to its capacity, and close to Us is a Book pronouncing the Truth, and they will not be done any injustice. | | 23:63 | Transliteration Bal quloobuhum fee ghamratin min hathawalahum aAAmalun min dooni thalika hum lahaAAamiloon Sahih International But their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides disbelief which they are doing, Muhsin Khan Nay, but their hearts are covered (blind) from understanding this (the Quran), and they have other (evil) deeds, besides, which they are doing. Yusuf Ali But their hearts are in confused ignorance of this; and there are, besides that, deeds of theirs, which they will (continue) to do,- Dr. Ghali No indeed, (but) their hearts are in perplexity as to this, and they have deeds other than that (even lesser than that) that they are doing. | | 23:64 | Transliteration Hatta itha akhathnamutrafeehim bilAAathabi itha hum yaj-aroon Sahih International Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment, at once they are crying [to Allah ] for help. Muhsin Khan Until, when We grasp those of them who lead a luxurious life with punishment, behold! They make humble invocation with a loud voice. Yusuf Ali Until, when We seize in Punishment those of them who received the good things of this world, behold, they will groan in supplication! Dr. Ghali Till when We took the ones who lived in luxury among them (to task) with torment, only then do they (go on) imploring. | | 23:65 | Transliteration La taj-aroo alyawma innakum minnala tunsaroon Sahih International Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped. Muhsin Khan Invoke not loudly this day! Certainly, you shall not be helped by Us. Yusuf Ali (It will be said): "Groan not in supplication this day: for ye shall certainly not be helped by Us. Dr. Ghali "Do not implore today; surely you will not be vindicated by Us. | | 23:66 | Transliteration Qad kanat ayatee tutlaAAalaykum fakuntum AAala aAAqabikum tankisoon Sahih International My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels Muhsin Khan Indeed My Verses used to be recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels (denying them, and with hatred to listen to them). Yusuf Ali "My Signs used to be rehearsed to you, but ye used to turn back on your heels- Dr. Ghali My ayat (Verses, signs) were readily recited to you, yet on your heels you used to turn. | | 23:67 | Transliteration Mustakbireena bihi samiran tahjuroon Sahih International In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil. Muhsin Khan In pride (they Quraish pagans and polytheists of Makkah used to feel proud that they are the dwellers of Makkah sanctuary Haram), talking evil about it (the Quran) by night. Yusuf Ali "In arrogance: talking nonsense about the (Qur'an), like one telling fables by night." Dr. Ghali Waxing proud against it, forsaking it for entertainment." | | 23:68 | Transliteration Afalam yaddabbaroo alqawla am jaahumma lam ya/ti abaahumu al-awwaleen Sahih International Then have they not reflected over the Qur'an, or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers? Muhsin Khan Have they not pondered over the Word (of Allah, i.e. what is sent down to the Prophet SAW), or has there come to them what had not come to their fathers of old? Yusuf Ali Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old? Dr. Ghali So have they not pondered over the Saying, or did there come to them that which did not come up to their earliest fathers? | | 23:69 | Transliteration Am lam yaAArifoo rasoolahum fahum lahumunkiroon Sahih International Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging? Muhsin Khan Or is it that they did not recognize their Messenger (Muhammad SAW) so they deny him? Yusuf Ali Or do they not recognise their Messenger, that they deny him? Dr. Ghali Or did they not recognise their Messenger and so denied (Literally: (were) deniers (of his Message) him? | | 23:70 | Transliteration Am yaqooloona bihi jinnatun bal jaahumbilhaqqi waaktharuhum lilhaqqi karihoon Sahih International Or do they say, "In him is madness?" Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse. Muhsin Khan Or say they: "There is madness in him?" Nay, but he brought them the truth [i.e. "(A) Tauhid: Worshipping Allah Alone in all aspects (B) The Quran (C) The religion of Islam,"] but most of them (the disbelievers) are averse to the truth. Yusuf Ali Or do they say, "He is possessed"? Nay, he has brought them the Truth, but most of them hate the Truth. Dr. Ghali Or do they say, "There is madness in him"? No indeed, he has come to them with the Truth, and most of them hate the Truth. (Literally: are haters of the Truth) | | 23:71 | Transliteration Walawi ittabaAAa alhaqqu ahwaahumlafasadati assamawatu wal-arduwaman feehinna bal ataynahum bithikrihim fahum AAanthikrihim muAAridoon Sahih International But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away. Muhsin Khan And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been corrupted! Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder. Yusuf Ali If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption! Nay, We have sent them their admonition, but they turn away from their admonition. Dr. Ghali And if the Truth ever followed their prejudices, the heavens and the earth and whoever is therein would indeed have been corrupted. No indeed, We have come up to them with (i.e., brought) their Remembrance, had from their Remembrance they are veering away. | | 23:72 | Transliteration Am tas-aluhum kharjan fakharajurabbika khayrun wahuwa khayru arraziqeen Sahih International Or do you, [O Muhammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers. Muhsin Khan Or is it that you (O Muhammad SAW) ask them for some wages? But the recompense of your Lord is better, and He is the Best of those who give sustenance. Yusuf Ali Or is it that thou askest them for some recompense? But the recompense of thy Lord is best: He is the Best of those who give sustenance. Dr. Ghali Or (even) do you ask them for tribute? Yet the (bounteous) tribute of your Lord is more charitable, (i.e., better) and He is The Most Charitable of providers. | | 23:73 | Transliteration Wa-innaka latadAAoohum ila siratinmustaqeem Sahih International And indeed, you invite them to a straight path. Muhsin Khan And certainly, you (O Muhammad SAW) call them to a Straight Path (true religion Islamic Monotheism). Yusuf Ali But verily thou callest them to the Straight Way; Dr. Ghali And surely you are indeed calling them to a straight Path. | | 23:74 | Transliteration Wa-inna allatheena layu/minoona bil-akhirati AAani assiratilanakiboon Sahih International But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path. Muhsin Khan And verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter are indeed deviating far astray from the Path (true religion Islamic Monotheism). Yusuf Ali And verily those who believe not in the Hereafter are deviating from that Way. Dr. Ghali And surely the ones who do not believe in the Hereafter are eschewing the (right) Path. | | 23:75 | Transliteration Walaw rahimnahum wakashafnama bihim min durrin lalajjoo fee tughyanihimyaAAmahoon Sahih International And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly. Muhsin Khan And though We had mercy on them and removed the distress which is on them, still they would obstinately persist in their transgression, wandering blindly. Yusuf Ali If We had mercy on them and removed the distress which is on them, they would obstinately persist in their transgression, wandering in distraction to and fro. Dr. Ghali And if We had mercy on them and lifted off the adversity that is upon them, they would indeed still insist on blundering in their inordinance. | | 23:76 | Transliteration Walaqad akhathnahum bilAAathabifama istakanoo lirabbihim wama yatadarraAAoon Sahih International And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus] Muhsin Khan And indeed We seized them with punishment, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor did they invoke (Allah) with submission to Him. Yusuf Ali We inflicted Punishment on them, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor do they submissively entreat (Him)!- Dr. Ghali And indeed We already took them (to task) with torment, yet in no way did they yield themselves to their Lord, and in no way did they supplicate (Him). | | 23:77 | Transliteration Hatta itha fatahnaAAalayhim baban tha AAathabin shadeedin ithahum feehi mublisoon Sahih International Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair. Muhsin Khan Until, when We open for them the gate of severe punishment, then lo! They will be plunged into destruction with deep regrets, sorrows and in despair. Yusuf Ali Until We open on them a gate leading to a severe Punishment: then Lo! they will be plunged in despair therein! Dr. Ghali Until, when We open upon them a gate of (Literally: owning, comprising) strict torment, only then are they dumbfounded at it. | | 23:78 | Transliteration Wahuwa allathee anshaa lakumu assamAAawal-absara wal-af-idata qaleelan matashkuroon Sahih International And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful. Muhsin Khan It is He, Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), sight (eyes), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give. Yusuf Ali It is He Who has created for you (the faculties of) hearing, sight, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give! Dr. Ghali And He is The One Who brought into being for you hearing, and beholdings (i.e., eyesights) and heart-sights; (Or: perception) little do you thank (Him)! | | 23:79 | Transliteration Wahuwa allathee tharaakum feeal-ardi wa-ilayhi tuhsharoon Sahih International And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered. Muhsin Khan And it is He Who has created you on the earth, and to Him you shall be gathered back. Yusuf Ali And He has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered back. Dr. Ghali And He is The One Who has propagated you in the earth, and to Him you will be mustered. | | 23:80 | Transliteration Wahuwa allathee yuhyeewayumeetu walahu ikhtilafu allayli wannahariafala taAAqiloon Sahih International And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason? Muhsin Khan And it is He Who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of night and day. Will you not then understand? Yusuf Ali It is He Who gives life and death, and to Him (is due) the alternation of Night and Day: will ye not then understand? Dr. Ghali And He is The One Who gives life and makes to die, and to Him belongs the alternation of night and daytime; will you then not consider?. | | 23:81 | Transliteration Bal qaloo mithla ma qalaal-awwaloon Sahih International Rather, they say like what the former peoples said. Muhsin Khan Nay, but they say the like of what the men of old said. Yusuf Ali On the contrary they say things similar to what the ancients said. Dr. Ghali No indeed, (but) they said the like of what the earliest (people) said. | | 23:82 | Transliteration Qaloo a-itha mitnawakunna turaban waAAithamana-inna lamabAAoothoon Sahih International They said, "When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? Muhsin Khan They said: "When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected indeed? Yusuf Ali They say: "What! when we die and become dust and bones, could we really be raised up again? Dr. Ghali They said, "When we die and are dust and bones, will we indeed be made to rise up again? | | 23:83 | Transliteration Laqad wuAAidna nahnu waabaonahatha min qablu in hatha illa asateerual-awwaleen Sahih International We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples." Muhsin Khan "Verily, this we have been promised, we and our fathers before (us)! This is only the tales of the ancients!" Yusuf Ali "Such things have been promised to us and to our fathers before! they are nothing but tales of the ancients!" Dr. Ghali Indeed we and our fathers have already been promised this earlier; decidedly this is nothing except myths of the earliest (people)." | | 23:84 | Transliteration Qul limani al-ardu waman feehain kuntum taAAlamoon Sahih International Say, [O Muhammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?" Muhsin Khan Say: "Whose is the earth and whosoever is therein? If you know!" Yusuf Ali Say: "To whom belong the earth and all beings therein? (say) if ye know!" Dr. Ghali Say, "To whom does the earth belong, and whoever is in it, in case you know?" | | 23:85 | Transliteration Sayaqooloona lillahi qul afalatathakkaroon Sahih International They will say, "To Allah ." Say, "Then will you not remember?" Muhsin Khan They will say: "It is Allah's!" Say: "Will you not then remember?" Yusuf Ali They will say, "To Allah!" say: "Yet will ye not receive admonition?" Dr. Ghali They will say, "To Allah." Say, "Will you not then be mindful?" | | 23:86 | Transliteration Qul man rabbu assamawatiassabAAi warabbu alAAarshi alAAatheem Sahih International Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?" Muhsin Khan Say: "Who is (the) Lord of the seven heavens, and (the) Lord of the Great Throne?" Yusuf Ali Say: "Who is the Lord of the seven heavens, and the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme?" Dr. Ghali Say, "Who is The Lord of the seven heavens and The Lord of the Ever-Magnificent Throne ?" | | 23:87 | Transliteration Sayaqooloona lillahi qul afalatattaqoon Sahih International They will say, "[They belong] to Allah ." Say, "Then will you not fear Him?" Muhsin Khan They will say: "Allah." Say: "Will you not then fear Allah (believe in His Oneness, obey Him, believe in the Resurrection and Recompense for each and every good or bad deed)." Yusuf Ali They will say, "(They belong) to Allah." Say: "Will ye not then be filled with awe?" Dr. Ghali They will say, "To Allah (all that belongs)." Say, "Will you not then be pious?" | | 23:88 | Transliteration Qul man biyadihi malakootu kulli shay-inwahuwa yujeeru wala yujaru AAalayhi in kuntumtaAAlamoon Sahih International Say, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?" Muhsin Khan Say "In Whose Hand is the sovereignty of everything (i.e. treasures of each and everything)? And He protects (all), while against Whom there is no protector, (i.e. if Allah saves anyone none can punish or harm him, and if Allah punishes or harms anyone none can save him), if you know." [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 12, Page 145] Yusuf Ali Say: "Who is it in whose hands is the governance of all things,- who protects (all), but is not protected (of any)? (say) if ye know." Dr. Ghali Say, "In whose hand is the dominion of everything, and He gives neighborly (protection), and He is not given neighborly (protection by anyone), in case you know?" | | 23:89 | Transliteration Sayaqooloona lillahi qul faannatusharoon Sahih International They will say, "[All belongs] to Allah ." Say, "Then how are you deluded?" Muhsin Khan They will say: "(All that belongs) to Allah." Say: "How then are you deceived and turn away from the truth?" Yusuf Ali They will say, "(It belongs) to Allah." Say: "Then how are ye deluded?" Dr. Ghali They will say, "To Allah (all that belongs)." Say, "However then are you bewitched?" | | 23:90 | Transliteration Bal ataynahum bilhaqqiwa-innahum lakathiboon Sahih International Rather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars. Muhsin Khan Nay, but We have brought them the truth (Islamic Monotheism), and verily, they (disbelievers) are liars. Yusuf Ali We have sent them the Truth: but they indeed practise falsehood! Dr. Ghali No indeed, (but) We have come up to them with (i.e., because) the Truth, and surely they are indeed liars. | | 23:91 | Transliteration Ma ittakhatha Allahumin waladin wama kana maAAahu min ilahin ithanlathahaba kullu ilahin bima khalaqa walaAAalabaAAduhum AAala baAAdin subhana AllahiAAamma yasifoon Sahih International Allah has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have sought to overcome others. Exalted is Allah above what they describe [concerning Him]. Muhsin Khan No son (or offspring or children) did Allah beget, nor is there any ilah (god) along with Him; (if there had been many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have tried to overcome others! Glorified be Allah above all that they attribute to Him! Yusuf Ali No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god along with Him: (if there were many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have lorded it over others! Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the (sort of) things they attribute to Him! Dr. Ghali In no way has Allah taken to Him any child, and in no way has there been with Him any god. Lo, for that each god would indeed have gone away with whatever he created, and some of them would indeed have exalted themselves over others. (Literally: over some (others) All Extolment be to Allah over whatever they describe. | | 23:92 | Transliteration AAalimi alghaybi washshahadatifataAAala AAamma yushrikoon Sahih International [He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, so high is He above what they associate [with Him]. Muhsin Khan All-Knower of the unseen and the seen! Exalted be He over all that they associate as partners to Him! Yusuf Ali He knows what is hidden and what is open: too high is He for the partners they attribute to Him! Dr. Ghali The Knower of the Unseen and the Witnessed; so Supremely Exalted be He above whatever they associate (with Him)!. | | 23:93 | Transliteration Qul rabbi imma turiyannee mayooAAadoon Sahih International Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised, Muhsin Khan Say (O Muhammad SAW): " My Lord! If You would show me that with which they are threatened (torment), Yusuf Ali Say: "O my Lord! if Thou wilt show me (in my lifetime) that which they are warned against,- Dr. Ghali Say, "Lord, in case You ever definitely show me what they are promised. | | 23:94 | Transliteration Rabbi fala tajAAalnee fee alqawmi aththalimeen Sahih International My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people." Muhsin Khan "My Lord! Then (save me from Your Punishment), and put me not amongst the people who are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing)." Yusuf Ali "Then, O my Lord! put me not amongst the people who do wrong!" Dr. Ghali Lord, then do not make me among the unjust people." | | 23:95 | Transliteration Wa-inna AAala an nuriyaka manaAAiduhum laqadiroon Sahih International And indeed, We are able to show you what We have promised them. Muhsin Khan And indeed We are Able to show you (O Muhammad SAW) that with which We have threatened them. Yusuf Ali And We are certainly able to show thee (in fulfilment) that against which they are warned. Dr. Ghali And surely We are indeed the Determiners over showing you (i.e., the Prophet) whatever We promise them. | | 23:96 | Transliteration IdfaAA billatee hiya ahsanu assayyi-atanahnu aAAlamu bima yasifoon Sahih International Repel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe. Muhsin Khan Repel evil with that which is better. We are Best-Acquainted with the things they utter. Yusuf Ali Repel evil with that which is best: We are well acquainted with the things they say. Dr. Ghali Repel the odious (act) with that which is fairest. We, Ever We, know best whatever they describe. | | 23:97 | Transliteration Waqul rabbi aAAoothu bika min hamazatiashshayateen Sahih International And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils, Muhsin Khan And say: "My Lord! I seek refuge with You from the whisperings (suggestions) of the Shayatin (devils). Yusuf Ali And say "O my Lord! I seek refuge with Thee from the suggestions of the Evil Ones. Dr. Ghali And say, "Lord, I take refuge in You from the promptings of Ash-Shayatin, (The ever-vicious (ones), i.e., the devils). | | 23:98 | Transliteration WaaAAoothu bika rabbi an yahduroon Sahih International And I seek refuge in You, my Lord , lest they be present with me." Muhsin Khan "And I seek refuge with You, My Lord! lest they may attend (or come near) me." Yusuf Ali "And I seek refuge with Thee O my Lord! lest they should come near me." Dr. Ghali And I take refuge in You, Lord, that they should not be present with me." | | 23:99 | Transliteration Hatta itha jaa ahadahumualmawtu qala rabbi irjiAAoon Sahih International [For such is the state of the disbelievers], until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back Muhsin Khan Until, when death comes to one of them (those who join partners with Allah), he says: "My Lord! Send me back, Yusuf Ali (In Falsehood will they be) Until, when death comes to one of them, he says: "O my Lord! send me back (to life),- Dr. Ghali Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, " Lord! Return (The pronoun (attached to the verb) is plural; i.e., let the angels return me) me. | | 23:100 | Transliteration LaAAallee aAAmalu salihanfeema taraktu kalla innaha kalimatun huwa qa-iluhawamin wara-ihim barzakhun ila yawmi yubAAathoon Sahih International That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected. Muhsin Khan "So that I may do good in that which I have left behind!" No! It is but a word that he speaks, and behind them is Barzakh (a barrier) until the Day when they will be resurrected. Yusuf Ali "In order that I may work righteousness in the things I neglected." - "By no means! It is but a word he says."- Before them is a Partition till the Day they are raised up. Dr. Ghali That possibly I will do righteousness in that which I have left (behind)." Not at all! surely it is (only) a word he says, and beyond them (i.e., all mankind) is an isthmus until the Day they are made to rise again. | | 23:101 | Transliteration Fa-itha nufikha fee assoorifala ansaba baynahum yawma-ithin walayatasaaloon Sahih International So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another. Muhsin Khan Then, when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no kinship among them that Day, nor will they ask of one another. Yusuf Ali Then when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no more relationships between them that Day, nor will one ask after another! Dr. Ghali Then when the Trumpet is blown, upon that Day there will be no consanguity (any more) among them, nor will they ask one another. | | 23:102 | Transliteration Faman thaqulat mawazeenuhu faola-ikahumu almuflihoon Sahih International And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful. Muhsin Khan Then, those whose scales (of good deeds) are heavy, - these, they are the successful. Yusuf Ali Then those whose balance (of good deeds) is heavy,- they will attain salvation: Dr. Ghali So he whose scales weigh heavy, then those are they who are the prosperers. | | 23:103 | Transliteration Waman khaffat mawazeenuhu faola-ikaallatheena khasiroo anfusahum fee jahannama khalidoon Sahih International But those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally. Muhsin Khan And those whose scales (of good deeds) are light, they are those who lose their ownselves, in Hell will they abide. Yusuf Ali But those whose balance is light, will be those who have lost their souls, in Hell will they abide. Dr. Ghali And he whose scales weigh light, then those are the ones who have lost their (own) selves in Hell eternally (abiding). | | 23:104 | Transliteration Talfahu wujoohahumu annaruwahum feeha kalihoon Sahih International The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles. Muhsin Khan The Fire will burn their faces, and therein they will grin, with displaced lips (disfigured). Yusuf Ali The Fire will burn their faces, and they will therein grin, with their lips displaced. Dr. Ghali The Fire is searing their faces, and they are therein glumly glowering. | | 23:105 | Transliteration Alam takun ayatee tutlaAAalaykum fakuntum biha tukaththiboon Sahih International [It will be said]. "Were not My verses recited to you and you used to deny them?" Muhsin Khan "Were not My Verses (this Quran) recited to you, and then you used to deny them?" Yusuf Ali "Were not My Signs rehearsed to you, and ye did but treat them as falsehood?" Dr. Ghali "Were not My ayat (Verses, signs) recited to you, yet you used to cry them lies?" | | 23:106 | Transliteration Qaloo rabbana ghalabatAAalayna shiqwatuna wakunna qawman dalleen Sahih International They will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray. Muhsin Khan They will say: "Our Lord! Our wretchedness overcame us, and we were (an) erring people. Yusuf Ali They will say: "our Lord! Our misfortune overwhelmed us, and we became a people astray! Dr. Ghali They will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness has overcome us, and we were an erring people. | | 23:107 | Transliteration Rabbana akhrijna minhafa-in AAudna fa-inna thalimoon Sahih International Our Lord, remove us from it, and if we were to return [to evil], we would indeed be wrongdoers." Muhsin Khan "Our Lord! Bring us out of this; if ever we return (to evil), then indeed we shall be Zalimun: (polytheists, oppressors, unjust, and wrong-doers, etc.)." Yusuf Ali "Our Lord! bring us out of this: if ever we return (to Evil), then shall we be wrong-doers indeed!" Dr. Ghali Our Lord, bring us (forth) out of it! So, in case we go back (to disbelief) then surely we will be unjust." | | 23:108 | Transliteration Qala ikhsaoo feeha walatukallimoon Sahih International He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me. Muhsin Khan He (Allah) will say: "Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!" Yusuf Ali He will say: "Be ye driven into it (with ignominy)! And speak ye not to Me! Dr. Ghali He will say, "Begone into it spurned, and do not speak to Me. | | 23:109 | Transliteration Innahu kana fareequn min AAibadeeyaqooloona rabbana amanna faghfirlana warhamna waanta khayru arrahimeen Sahih International Indeed, there was a party of My servants who said, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.' Muhsin Khan Verily! There was a party of My slaves, who used to say: "Our Lord! We believe, so forgive us, and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of all who show mercy!" Yusuf Ali "A part of My servants there was, who used to pray 'our Lord! we believe; then do Thou forgive us, and have mercy upon us: For Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!" Dr. Ghali Surely there was a group of My bondmen who said, ‘Our Lord, we believe, so forgive us and have mercy on us, and You are The Most Charitable of the merciful.' | | 23:110 | Transliteration Fattakhathtumoohumsikhriyyan hatta ansawkum thikree wakuntumminhum tadhakoon Sahih International But you took them in mockery to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them. Muhsin Khan But you took them for a laughingstock, so much so that they made you forget My Remembrance while you used to laugh at them! Yusuf Ali "But ye treated them with ridicule, so much so that (ridicule of) them made you forget My Message while ye were laughing at them! Dr. Ghali Yet, you took them to yourselves (as a target) for scoffing, till they made you forget My Remembrance, and you used to laugh at them. | | 23:111 | Transliteration Innee jazaytuhumu alyawma bima sabarooannahum humu alfa-izoon Sahih International Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance - that they are the attainers [of success]." Muhsin Khan Verily! I have rewarded them this Day for their patience, they are indeed the ones that are successful. Yusuf Ali "I have rewarded them this Day for their patience and constancy: they are indeed the ones that have achieved Bliss..." Dr. Ghali Surely today, I have recompensed them for that they (endured) patiently; (and) (i.e., because) they are the ones who are triumphant." | | 23:112 | Transliteration Qala kam labithtum fee al-ardiAAadada sineen Sahih International [ Allah ] will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?" Muhsin Khan He (Allah) will say: "What number of years did you stay on earth?" Yusuf Ali He will say: "What number of years did ye stay on earth?" Dr. Ghali He Allah) will say, "How long have you lingered in the earth, by number of years?" | | 23:113 | Transliteration Qaloo labithna yawman aw baAAdayawmin fas-ali alAAaddeen Sahih International They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate." Muhsin Khan They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep account." Yusuf Ali They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day: but ask those who keep account." Dr. Ghali They will say, "We have lingered a day, or part (Literally: Some (part) of a day, so ask the numberers." | | 23:114 | Transliteration Qala in labithtum illaqaleelan law annakum kuntum taAAlamoon Sahih International He will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known. Muhsin Khan He (Allah) will say: "You stayed not but a little, if you had only known! Yusuf Ali He will say: "Ye stayed not but a little,- if ye had only known! Dr. Ghali He will say, "You have decidedly lingered (nothing) except a little, if (only) you knew. | | 23:115 | Transliteration Afahasibtum annama khalaqnakumAAabathan waannakum ilayna la turjaAAoon Sahih International Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?" Muhsin Khan "Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?" Yusuf Ali "Did ye then think that We had created you in jest, and that ye would not be brought back to Us (for account)?" Dr. Ghali Did you then reckon that We created you only for sport and that you would not be returned to Us?" | | 23:116 | Transliteration FataAAala Allahualmaliku alhaqqu la ilaha illa huwarabbu alAAarshi alkareem Sahih International So exalted is Allah , the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne. Muhsin Khan So Exalted be Allah, the True King, La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Lord of the Supreme Throne! Yusuf Ali Therefore exalted be Allah, the King, the Reality: there is no god but He, the Lord of the Throne of Honour! Dr. Ghali Then Supremely Exalted be Allah, The King, The Truth! There is no god except He, The Lord of the Honorable Throne. | | 23:117 | Transliteration Waman yadAAu maAAa Allahi ilahanakhara la burhana lahu bihi fa-innamahisabuhu AAinda rabbihi innahu la yuflihualkafiroon Sahih International And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed. Muhsin Khan And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allah, any other ilah (god), of whom he has no proof, then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely! Al-Kafirun (the disbelievers in Allah and in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, pagans, idolaters, etc.) will not be successful. Yusuf Ali If anyone invokes, besides Allah, Any other god, he has no authority therefor; and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the Unbelievers will fail to win through! Dr. Ghali And whoever invokes another god with Allah, whereof he has no proof, then surely his reckoning will only be in the Reckoning of his Lord; surely the disbelievers will not prosper. | | 23:118 | Transliteration Waqul rabbi ighfir warhamwaanta khayru arrahimeen Sahih International And, [O Muhammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful." Muhsin Khan And say (O Muhammad SAW): "My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for You are the Best of those who show mercy!" Yusuf Ali So say: "O my Lord! grant Thou forgiveness and mercy for Thou art the Best of those who show mercy!" Dr. Ghali And say, "Lord! Forgive and have mercy, and you are The Most Charitable of the merciful." |
